View Full Version : Beachy Head mini meet?

Pugs

Anyone fancy doing a mini meet the later part of May, fishing from low around Beachy Head reefs with the emphasis on plugging until dark and then switching to bait after dark?

Probably on the Sat 19th May, low tide at 20:00

That sounds very interesting. Do you mind having a relative newbie along? Do you walk along from Holywell or over the cliffs?

Alan, of course all are welcome.

What dates are best for people but we may have to act fairly quickly if we wish to fish in May. Peeler crab should be the bait of choice I reckon....

Mr Pugs, Hugh, JD et al

Sounds like a good time for a meet as the bass should be established off the reefs by the end of May. Not sure if you are a regular down at the head but you need to be very careful fishing a flooding tide at the ledge. I usually find the last 2 hours down and the first hour up at the ledge are OK. Personally I dont stay too long on the flood preferring to come back to Cow gap reefs as the tide floods in over the reef edge.

Edible peeler is usually the best bait, but prawn and sandeel will also take fish. Fish close in.

Would love to join you but I will be stuck in Vietnam at end of May, I'm expecting to be home in July for 3 weeks :clap2: and am looking forward to some bass, smuts and a sole if I can get away from all the jobs that need doing at home.

Regards
barry

I'm up for a June meet after the first week of June.

26-05-2007, 15:09
pugs, i fance having a bash with the lure (only the one rapala at £10 each !) down there next week sometime, i'm fishing a species comp (week long) and have a zone limit of beachy head lighthouse, might even take the fly rod if the weather is fine (just so i can make an ass of myself and crack-off a few fly/lures ! )

you free any time next week ? i definitely working wed's, and got a club comp on wed's eve, but otherwise i think i'm fairly free for an early or late session on thursday or friday, maybe even sat am, got lots of fishing to do next week, but i'm hoping to squeeze it in somewhere !

thats a shame dude, i'll prob give it a go at some point this week, depends whether or not i can get a sensible bass from beach first !

Barry

Hugh

From bitter (and expensive) experience I can tell you there is a fairly good chance you will lose your rapala off the reefs as they fish too deep. You are much better off with a popper in low light or a sub-surface lure.

If you or Pugs fancy an early morning or evening session off the reefs when I'm home in July just let me know.

Pugs
28-05-2007, 09:24
Hugh, I cant make this week or certainly not during the day. I'm off next week on a bleedin course as well. Maybe we should wait until Barry gets home, Barry when are you home next and for how long?

Barry

I arrive back in the UK on the 8th July and am scheduled to stay here until the 27th. My eldest daughter is getting married on the 22nd but I will be able to slot in a few early mornings and late evening sessions. best times are usually the 3 or 4 days before the spring tides.

Not sure yet but I may be coming back to UK permanently in September but that has been the plan for the last 5 years so I won't hold my breath or make any long term plans yet.

Hi Pugs

I arrive back in the UK on the 7th July evening. I need to spend a few days at home being the attentive husband (as I havn't seen her who must be obeyed for 2 months and I need to organise a suit for the wedding). Once I have done the family man bit I will be hitting the rocks for a few early morning or evening sessions.

The wedding on the 22nd means I will probably not be available (allowed) to fish between 19th and 23rd.

So between 10th-18th and 24-26th will be OK for me. Just fix a time and tide.

The better news is that my contract will be finishing around 18th August and I will be returning to live in the UK from around 1st September. Lots of fishing then!

Just seen this - would have come down with the fly rod, but in Dorset for a few days. Will be interested to see how you get on.

Fished BH once early season and blanked - been too windy / stirred up to venture out since.

Do you do any good in rough weather on plugs down there Barry when the water is coloured up?

Rupe

Barry
03-07-2007, 11:04
Rupe

The water is usually cloudy there even if the sea is not rough. The fast tides and the chalk cliffs tend to make the water milky. It can be clear but not all that often. Fishing the head area in anything more than F4 is not to be recommended.

As for lures or flies I tend to use dark colours most of the time.

Confirmation

Right then...Friday 13th (ha ha) we are meeting at 03:00? at the top of the road (near a school I think, Barry can you confirm?)

People going so far are
1:Me
2:Barry
3:Simon

Best if we can get crab and take two rods each, one for plugging and the other for a nice big bait in a gulley ;-)

Is anyone else signing up?

Hi Guys

I drove down last night to meet u all, really looking forward to seeing u all and gaining some good experience...got to the rendevous about 2:50am waited 20 mins got really paranoid I was in the wrong place and drove up and down seeing if I could find another 'L' in the road and a school...couldn't so went back and parked by the little cafe (3:10) decided to walk up the obvious path and see if I could see three silouettes on the beach...twas a dark and windy night  as I walked further along the cliff top :whistling I was getting more desperate...

Walked up then down then up again but just couldnt see a way down (a safe way that is) to the beach so I reluctantly gave up  , by this time it was about 3:45. Gutted I trudged back to the car and drove home (raced some taxi's on thier local roads) made good time getting home just before 5:00.

I turned my pc on this morning to re-read the post to see if I got the meeting place wrong and then it hit me 3:00am Friday !!! I was there technically at 3:00am Saturday:oops:

I am very sorry I cocked up but more sorry for the time u spent waiting for me to turn up, sincere apologies to all.

After all that said, I would still like to be considered if you are going to do something like that again. Next time I will read the instructions carefully :rtfm:

Pugs
14-07-2007, 13:23
Doh! you must be gutted, byt the way if you had continued along the cliff you would have come to some wooden stairs that take you down to Cow Gap, at least you found the parking spaces and know where to go, pretty sure we will go again in August

We had 2 bass of 40 + 45cm + 1 eel, all on crab. The fish were certainly biting and I missed at least 4 bites on crab. It's certainly a top venue and surpsingly sheltered in the SW we were up against. I did a report post in the main South section yesterday.

Pugs and I arrived a bit late ourselves at 3.15 so don't worry about making us wait cos we assumed you couldn't make it and set off about 3.25.

Do come along mext time, I think it's worth it.

I may have hit a slight snag with Friday...I haven't told Debs yet but I fancy taking her to Goodwood for the horse racing (she just loves to get her 'hat' on) however with the first race just after 2pm and with previous experience I need to allow a bit of time I would really only be able to fish up to 10am.

I so want to come and fish with u all...its a way for me to come just for 2 hrs, is there any point in getting there earlier than 8am and is anyone experienced interested? (cant do it on my own as I dont even know how to get to the beach... let alone the fact that I havent caught a fish yet demonstrates I could do with been led a bit, officially Debs caught our only mackrel)

Not fished it before but as it's rough ground (check it out at low tide and fish it up) so I would use poppers and shallow divers (1'-2'). Pugs n JP should be able to help you out if I have missed anything.

Oh they will probably high light the fact that it is a healthy walk from the car park (especially on the way back) and the weed covered rocks are very slippery so wear appropriate foot wear and plan your route back to safety at low for fishing the flood tide.
