Targeting Trigger fish?

Hi,

I'd like to target triggerfish at a west of Ireland mark, I haven't caught any before and was wondering about rigs/methods, any info I've come across so far suggests that I should use a float with small (size 1) long shank hooks and a 30lb trace. I came across one comment where someone was catching them about 6ft down from the surface in 18ft of water. From what I can gather, if they are feeding they're not fussy about what's on offer. Can anyone give any more information or correct me if I've gotten anything wrong above. Thanks in advance.

i watched john wilson and co on tv catching them from chesil beach. they were using standard traces (paternoster) baited up with fresh rag and tipped with fresh peeler. leaving a few legs loose to attract the fish.think your wise using 20/30lb snood they have mighty sharp teeth.not much info sorry, use the search bar on the top of the page hope this helps

I have caught them down mumbles pier on a two hook paternoster trace with size 4 hooks and stips of cuttlefish and squid as bait.

I had loads of triggers off the boat last year and what a fun fish to catch, we use basic 3 hook pats. with 20lb fluro hook lengths, they have very sharp nasty teeth (can even bite a fine wire hook in two) but most fish are lip hooked. Best bait seems to be crab and shell fish mussles are a top bait, but will take worm and anything else on offer. They give a great scrap on light spinning gear and most fish where taken when using those glow beads. As for shore methods i can't help but hope this points you in the right direction. doggy
