G'day from WA. (Western Australia)

This is a favourite spot for fish to get you to sit as they try and make there way out to sea.

This is a Samson fish, so called because of its fighting prowess.

Here is one of the real game fish, a large Sailfish, caught from the rocks, by a mate, Tailor Marc.

And who says cliff fishing isn't fun

A closer shot, and remember its 90 yards straight down. PS note the number plate.

Heres an ariel view of the surrounding area, clearly showing the "Faultline" running across the bay. The water from where we fish, "The Oven" is about 80 feet deep just out in front. Can anybody tell me why it would be called the Oven?

Tremendous photographs Stax! Thanks for sharing them with us.
Just a few questions.
That's not by any chance a 'good old' Alvey reel you're using, is it? Many years ago they used to be very popular in this country particularly for fishing the rock ledges off our North East coast. Didn't you turn the reel sideways on - like a fixed spool, spinning reel for casting?
Do you ever target Marlin from the rocks? I recall there's similarly a place on Australia's East coast when they target them, smallish Blacks.
And finally there're obviously some places where you can get down to land fish but, as you mentioned, some of the prime spots are 90 metres up! How do you land them from there? I recall off the Western end of the Algarve (Portugal) a few old guys used to fish commercially with rod and line from even higher cliffs. There they used to attach a weighed wicker basket to their line, run it down open end first and then retrieve it with an attached line. But they were only catching Bass and Bluefish up to 10 to 15lbs in weight.
All the Best
Dave
Not quite the same as felixstowe lol
When we fish from the "high cliffs" we do use the "good old Alvey" reel you mentioned. The rod is a 10ft super stiff 50lb class brute.
We target Snapper, Baldchin and Emperor from these cliffs with the largest typical fish being about 14-15lb. Mostly 5-10lb.
To bring the fish up the cliff face it is almost impossible to wind the reel so we simply take the reel off the rod (carefully) and walk away from the cliffs edge with the reel in hand. The guy with the rod (who is tied to the car) stands at the cliffs edge holding the rod over the edge. As the person with the reel gets about 80 metres away the fish is swung over the edge and onto the ground. Make Sense.
The line is retieved onto the reel and the reel reattached to the rod to start over.
Casting is always fun. 10 metres out 80 metres down.
When we fish for Pelegic fish we are only 6 metres up. From this height we use a cliff gaff to get our catch.
As to the Marlin....
Marlin have been hooked at Steep Point, but landed I don't know of any that have been tagged or landed. I'll ask the ranger next time I talk to him.
You do see the Sailfish and Marlin chasing smaller Peligic fish up to about 30lb.
Imaging trying to use that for bait.
"nonsense said the old man, just cast it like any other bait"
More photos to come.

Cheers Stax! Awesome pics! This place is up near the top of my wish list. I did the LBG thing a couple of years ago on the East coast of Oz and in NZ whilst travelling. Not much joy (we were there in the winter), although I did hook a couple of kingies and had a decent longtail tuna off the rocks. I heard whispers of a Black being taken off Steep point a couple of years ago, although that could be a vicious rumour! I met a guy whilst LBG'ing who had a 240lb black off the rocks a couple of seasons ago (I think in 2004?) at Jervis Bay. They had to cut it in half to get it up the cliffs!!
Get some more pics of those Spanish Mackeral up! There awesome fish (great eating too). Must be something else hooking them from dry land!

i fished from the boat out of shark bay when over in australia,we went round past steep point, the snapper fishing was fantastic ,if you could get them up through the sharks.i remember that steep point was a long drive in off the highway(4wd only) and you had to take in all your water and food with you, trully a great place to fish.the aussies know how to look after the fishing with catch limits for recreational fishing.how can we not do the same over here in uk
WICKED we have our share of cliff fishing and LBG over here with some extreme fish but that is one EXTREME location!!!! I get the heebies just looking at it! More pics would Rock!
Kingfish,
We actually hooked up on a Sailfish on my last visit, Early June. I was glad it got off as I did not want to gaff it or just cut it off with a lure stuck in its gob.

all i can say is wow!
Hi all- I'm new to this site & I've followed a link from an NZ website lerft by finatic.
I'm good mates with Tailor Marc- we went out for a bash on Sunday morn for Zilch but hey you gotta wet a line to be in with a chance.
Stax are you in Perth WA at all?
I'm pretty sure they call that section inn steep point the oven because no breeze gets in there on the ho hot summer days & it literally cooks. 45-50C.
Yes, I live in Perth. Yes I know Tailor Marc, Yes the Ovens is the hottest place on earth in the summer. The sun rises at 5.00am and sets at 7.30pm and beats down on the Ovens the whole time. Our temp gauge hit 55C there 2 days in a row. Move about 25 metres and its a mere 40C.

Mate any pics of these HUGE cod? or any other pics of this incredible place and it's WILDlife!! Cheers!

To gaff fish from this high we use cliff gaff, bit to high for anything else.
Wouldnt want to fall in  Lots of 14ft+ tiger sharks cruisin the base of the cliff waiting for a mackeral to get pulled in like this one my uncle got up but after a shark got to it lol...

This is the part whan i tell youz about the "Monsters" that lurk at the base of the cliffs up steep point.
Since i was 5 i had heard storys of the might cod. Was told it was the size of a VW. Now bieng a fisherman thats spun a few yarns i thought it was a load of crap until the first time i went to the point.
My uncle was fighting a spanish mack and had it to the base of the cliff ready to gaff. A few people were watching the gaff get lowerd down when i heard someone yell out " COD"!!!!
I raced to the edge of the cliff and looked over to see it!
Im not kidding when i say its acually the size of a vw beetle. It came up with its mouth open and all i seen was a gaping mouth with loads of old lines tangled in chunks of coral hanging from its mouth.
Iv sinced learnd that all the steep point regulars have named it jingles.
Its truely a sight to see.
One day i want to see if i could get a pic of the mighty cod. We had just filleted a 40pound yellowtail king and we tide some fishing line (without a hook to the carcass and chucked it off the cliff and let it sink. Sure enough "Jingles" came up for a look and as my uncle wound the carcass to the surface i snapped this pic below. Remember im 30 foot up and thats a huge carcass so you can guess how big "Jingles" is.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2285/thecod1lt.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
About 3-4 out of 10 good fish are lost to the cod. Yes it ****es us off to loose a monster mack to it but we all respect the cod....well most of us
Sadly i hate to say that the old mighty cod is no longer with us. A person new to the point killed it. Not sure how or why but we do know that the ranger knows who it was and is now banned from steep point for good.
Good news is that there is now about 2 more that have taken up residency there :) Not quite as big but still big enough.
Here is a thread off the steep point site about "jingles"

Literally unbelievable fishing in every sense..... the mark, the tactics used and the fish caught....... absolutely awesome and incredible..... out of interest would it be possible to actually land one of those monster cod from the cliffs- i imagine it'd be one helluva fight!! :notworthy

I would doubt if you would ever be able to pull it up the side even if you did manage to gaff it - it would probably pull you in for a bit of bait for the tiger sharks. I think I'd just decide not to bother.... and leave it for someone else.
I still can't believe some cruel heartless b$$$ard would kill such a magnificent creature - unbelieveable. :schmoll:

Yeah the rumor i heard was that he speared it.
He must of been diving down off the cliff face. Damm spewin he didnt get eaten by one of the 14ft tiger sharks .
They say that the species of cod pictured at the size of 2ft is 80yrs old so i would hate to think how old that one would be.
Its good that there are still some big ones there still. We loose many good spanish mackeral to them but its very exciting
Yes, mad pictures you have there, a unique place to fish!
Hey Tailor Marc, good to see you found me again. We seem to travel all over the place.
We will be off to Steep again in October and December; if there is room you are always welcome.
Some great photos of our not so hidden paradise.
Someone mentioned catching our little rock hugging friends!!!! Well I can assure you that you have no chance at all. We have seen two of these monsters lurking at the base of the cliffs which we have named Yogi and Bobo. They are about the same size a Yogi as well. My guess is over 200KG each, that’s 440lb.
I have recently bought a underwater webcam that will be going with me to Steep. I am determined to get some footage of these things. I'm just hoping they don't like bright Yellow Cameras. I say a webcam, its a camera on a long tethered cable that connects to your Laptop or VCR. Power is the main problem as I now have to take a 12 volt battery to the rocks with me.
Anyway people, make sure you visit our little website and have a look around and a read through the forums.

Great threads & pics, Stax & Tailor Marc,
I've been fortunate enough to fish out've Perth for the last two January's & the charter boat fishing is unbelievable. Fished out've Hillary's with Mills charters & can't fault them.
Gonna try & convince my mate to take us on a trip upto Steep Point next time i'm in W.A. though after viewing your catches. He's over here enjoying the English summer @ the mo. Lol. Summer, what a joke!
Tight lines, take it easy.
Taz.
Gimme an old Alvey and some Aussie rocks or surf any day , great pics, please don't post anymore though or i'll jump off the Orwell bridge!!!
Seriously how far is that fishing spot from Perth?
It's a twelve hour drive from Perth. About 800kms, but the last 3hours is on dirt and sand. 4x4 only with a couple of steep hill climbs.
It's well hidden and only the hardiest of fisherpeople go there.

You may have another 'wonder' of the world there!!!!!
Shame about jingles - there's always one who has to spoil things...:(
Bloody hell lads unbelievable fishing you have over there, awsome pics and a great thread to follow
Well since my last post I have travelled up to Steep Point about 15 times. I have noticed a really bad trend, two totally different things, both very disturbing.
The first one is the average size of the Spanish Mackerel and the Tuna fish has grown to "hard to catch" sizes. A 26Kg (nearly 60lb) Spanish and a massive massive 35Kg (almost 80Lb) caught a day later. To add to this the Yellowfin Tuna are like torpedo's, four feet long and over 50Kg of unstopable power and speed. I have yet to get one of these monsters to even turn its head before my 300 metres of line is about to run out. Great fun, sore arms, strained gear, lost lure, acheing back, but just one more cast...new lure, one cast, 300 metre later and you wonder what the hell were you thinking. Retrieve your 300 metres of line, new lure, just one more...idiot..another lost lure and another 300 metres to reel in.
The second thing is man made.
As with most great fishing spots its the 1% of people that ruin it for the 99%, and Steep Point is no different. How bloody hard is it to put your rubbish in a bin, the bins are provided all over the place. Theres nothing worst than crap and litter all over the place after a group leaves. We can only hope that the Ranger can task these idiots and boot then off the place.
Anyway thats enough from me, I post up some new pics when I go back in March/April.
Stax
great post stax, fantastic pictures i've been over the last few years with a bunch of guys from perth,we hire a house in denham take the boats and fish round steep point & turtle bay, theres some fantastic rock marks on dirk hartog on the north west side, they look really good/remote, trying to get back this year, mybe book a week on the island ,the guys dont like the sharks but i think there great sport, had a 5 metre shark leap clear of the swell an spooled me 80lb braid, didnt stand a chance,if i ever win the lotto i,ll be on my way the next day
