View Full Version : 29th September W.Sussex/ SAS Autumn Intercounty Invitation Fun Meet
After much agonising, soul searching, cross referencing and tide searches we're pleased (delighted? relieved? excited?) to announce a date for the friendly comp between ourselves, DAB, HHAC, TE, S. East forum and anyone else who'd like enjoy a fun days fishing. It will be:
Saturday 29th September on Widewater beach
This is a lot later than we would have liked but I hope you'll all agree the reasons are sound. We wanted to clash as little as possible with other events, have a good tide at the right time of day and not have too many bathers/holidaymakers getting in the way.
For those that don't know it, the Widewater is a reasonably long stretch of beach with free (that time of year at least) parking, toilets and should provide a diverse list of species to target.
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=520315&y=104215&z=3&sv=520315,104215&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf
Car park fee of £1 for the whole day
The tide is a big one (6.87m) and fishing will be from 10:30am to 4:30pm.
Rules
We will update with finer details as we go, but so far they are:
Catch and Release
Recording on score sheets signed by adjacent angler
Two rods, four hooks max
Walk off draw
Entirely optional £5 pool - prizes to be divided and spread in as even and novel way as possible apart from usual Biggest bag, best flat/round etc
Firm confirmation of all arrangements will be posted here a week before the event should there be any need for a judicious venue change because of weather or better fishing prospects.
Maximum of 2 garfish per angler.
No mackerel count for competition.
Schedule
Booking in and breakfast (free) from 9am (please bring a mug with you for tea or coffee)
Fishing 10:30 - 4:30 as per rules
4:30 - 6:00 (ish) Results, winners and BBQ and Paella (any fresh fish can be added lol)
6:30/7:00 - pub! Graham at the Royal Coach promised to welcome us :)
Evening/ night - more fishing down west arm for those that fancy it
Any questions and I'll be happy to answer as best I can. Stick the date down in your diaries, cancel the late holidays and come and join us for what we hope will be a memorable day :clap2:

few pics to show you venue, looking east to shoreham harbour, looking west towards worthing, Location map of widewater beach, the car park and finally what to look out for in search of breakfast lol
Good choice venue, and good choice of date for that venue I think. Should be a very good chance of a decent Bass or two come late September.

sounds good to me and plenty of notice so workable with the other half! Dates in my diary.
I'll be there and its in my diary.
Me and Jnr" Chris" will be there and without fail the tins will be going, and our scotch bonnet chilies (home grown) will also be on the menu by then so a roll of toilet paper chiiled in the fridge from now may be a good idea for those who wish to try them. Normal food will also be served, and I would like to say if the Toopoos Dogs outlet is busy fishing...try" Bungy's Burgers"...or.. "Sean's Shoreham Peri Peri Chicken".:)
Cheers

Certainly Rob :) I'm sure TE will welcome you to their ranks for E Sussex or ourselves if your loyalties lie with West Sussex.
Tough call for me. I live in West Sussex and am a member of both TE and SAS. But since I was a member of TE first and there are rather fewer members of TE than SAS, I reckon I will fly the TE banner.

Steve, what were the rules for West Bex as I wasn't at that meet, are they the one rod three hook type or one hook between three rods "lol"?, the last one appeals to me as I won't lose so much tackle:):g:.

One rod, three hooks is the norm I believe as it keeps it simple. That said, it's a big beach and unless those smoothhounds decide they like our area so much that they plan to stay the whole summer, it shouldn't be very busy.
I would like everyone who comes along to maximise their chances for example by fishing one rod close in for the bass and another further out for flatties etc.
It's above all a friendly meet so, I'll leave it until closer to the day after consulting with the other guys before we post a full set of rules. The aim is to have a good session with food and a few beers and a "gentle" competitive edge and I'd like as few restrictions as possible.
Whatever we decide I'd recommend people bring a couple of rods with them because the hardcore anglers will probably fancy a few hours down the arm in the evening/night anyway.
Leave it with us and Mike and I will post up all arrangements a week or so beforehand.

i like the idea of one in one out this will really open up the species menu and after all we want all our visitors too have every chance of connecting
with all the other bits which will be occurring this should make for a great day
best start pencilling the calender guys

plans already underway mark details soon
Fair play, Mike, I was just referring to the we'll post details a week or so ahead of time bit. I know you and Steve will be planning ahead so on reflection it was bit of a silly comment. Having organised meets before - and having somehow ended up with the South Forum hat for keeping the momentum going for the 28th July inter forum bash - I know that unless you keep the thing rolling, folk just forget! You guys are better at it than me anyway - all I do is try and get people in the right place at the right time - I can't cope with with laying on grub and all that!

don't i know it !
Food ? whilst fishing? how much money, what do i pay? where do i pay? i am happy to make a 60 mile trip in the name of belly building. Count me in , i'm there i'll be happy to chef the bbq for a period of time or until i have consumed what gets cooked first at least. I dont mind doing a bit of fishing while i'm there too if thats ok, and if i catch anything i am happy to eat that first so there will be enough for the next person in the que. I would of course be happy to give the head and tail back to sea for the greater good of the food chain, as i am not that greedy!
No money necessary mate, if anyone wants to join in an optional pool then I'm sure we can accomodate it along the lines of the marina meet last week. Plans should get an airing at tomorrow night's meeting at the Harbour Club.
However, should there be any bass caught I might be pursuaded to chuck them in the big peallera and cook the Paella I've been threatening to do for ages lol
Further updates on this event will follow in due course, but some things have been firmed up already:
Breakfast will be available to participants from about 9am to help set up anglers for the day's efforts ( should help the long distance travelers particularly). This will be free by the way but don;t expect the "full English" or a vegetarian option :D
Booking in is from the above time til just before the start.
No prizes have as yet been put up for this, the event being just a pure friendly and chance to meet other anglers, but there will be an optional £5 pool.
Fishing will be from 10:30am - 4:30pm, using max two rods and 4 hooks total.
At the end of the comp and during the sorting out of the kudos to victors there will be a beach BBQ and Paella for those missing their spanish holiday. This will be run at near cost ie there is no intention to profit from it - just cover costs. It should save our long distance invitees from having to burden themselves with food for a long day.
(there will be a charity bucket for any contributions to the TCT)
Post BBQ the intention is to retire for a couple of bevvys to a local pub (venue yet to be confirmed) for fishy chat etc.
As previously mentioned, for the hardcore anglers, there will be a later opportunity to fish the night tide at the West Arm.
The objective for this meet is to have good fun fishing session with a little intercounty rivalry and the invitation is extended to anglers from the SAS for West Sussex, the DAB from Dorset, the HHAC from Hampshire, TE (mainly for E Sussex) and the S.E. forum lads who so bravely endured the Marina meet on 28th July. We'll be delighted to have any representatives from the WSF forums come and join in too and so meet up with their local friendly clubs should they wish to consider membership.
Just to help us smooth over organisation and catering please could anyone who plans to come along please indicate their intentionand area by PM or leave a message here and we'll update and publish the list from time to time.
Looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible:clap2:

Any idea on Baits, species and the like on this?
Any idea on Baits, species and the like on this?
I will consult some experts other than my poor self and update the thread accordingly lol. But there will be large bass on offer close in, flatties and mullet for sure. Mackerel fillets, libe baits or squid for the bass. Ragworm works best usually for other species.
End of september last year...with the weather holding fine the place was absolutely boiling with gars....they feed seriously hard before their departure for the winter.....given the size of tide/number of you fishing etc...you would need to use fixed line tactics.....assuming you wanted to catch them.:)

So with there being teams, do I fish for team Essex or team South East or if there isnt enough fishernman from my area what team do I fish for.
This was set up as part of an inter county series that was mooted earlier in the year. Already been a Chesil leg run by DAB but then it kind of went into limbo. Hopefully, HHAC will organise a Hampshire leg too. That being so, I reckon you should fish for Team Essex, Jason. Or if there are not enough from your patch you can either tag on to one of the other teams or simply fish it solo for fun.
So with there being teams, do I fish for team Essex or team South East or if there isnt enough fishernman from my area what team do I fish for.
Leave it entirely up to you Jason. You can even decide on the day if you like - hopefully some of the SE or Essex lads will be shamed into supporting you:)
I will be comeing to support Jassyfa for Team essex or the southeast or just for fun looking forward to it.
Alan.

Welcome and good to have you on board Alan
I shall be able to attend and look forward to it. Problem is for whom do I fish?
I have decided therefore, as I shall be a hindrance to any team that I fish for, that I shall encourage all of you to get as many as possible of your members out to the meet, as I shall fish for the team with the least show ups.
So come on DAB, HHAC, SAS, if you don't want to be saddled with me, get your members out!!!!!!:clap2::clap2:
PS Andy C is going to do the same for either HHAC or DAB, but then he gets smaller fish than even I do, but he does get more of them.

so where is widewater beach? what county is it in and what town is it nearby?
Widewater beach is situated just off the A259 between shoreham and Lancing.
Cheers for the shout Steve, I can confirm that Tronix will be giving a 'token' gift to every angler who turns up and also will donate some prizes.
I'm just looking forward to Mesito's famous paella!!

Link for the map above Jason. The Widewater is between Lancing and Shoreham-by-sea (in turn between Worthing and Brighton).
It's a shingle beach with sand at low water and virtually snag free. Current is not particularly strong, but as this will be a big tide 5oz brerakaways will probably be needed to hold bottom when fishing at range.
Baits will be Mackerel, squid or live baits close in for the bass and ragworm bait of preference for fishing further out. Lug always handy as a back up or slipperlimpet if there has been one of those summer storms.
Beach is sectioned off by stone groynes appox 50 yards apart and stretches for a good mile and a half. Plenty of room for everyone. Hope this helps.
Cheers
Steve

mmm:g: may do - dont fancy gar bashing though :yucky:
Gar bashing from the beach? I'm sure it's possible :g: but I'm betting people will be keener to target mullet and bass etc
Venue is Widewater beaches Schuey and I reckon that after my codling yesterday anything could be on the fishing menu! :D.
Big tide, right time of year ..............how can we fail? ............ (gulp)
Trust me, Steve, it's more than possible to gar bash along that stretch of beach - and Schuey knows exactly how to do it. And so do a few others - including at least one of our likely visitors, Ian Houlton.:secret:
Thing is, Schuey - if you don't want to catch gar don't target 'em! With a bit of luck those goldies will still be about and feeding up ready to depart so it'll be mullet bashing instead. Mind you, that's supposing they don't get netted out - I noticed one of the Worthing beach fish sellers was flogging mullet yesterday at £4.50 a kilo so maybe they never showed off the Arm yesterday because they were newly residing in fish boxes:g::nonono:.
Sussex Schumacher
22-08-2007, 07:55
From what I've seen in matches along this stretch of beach before, if you get the right sea conditions, right weather it would be perfectly possible to catch upto 30 gars from the beach...... but then again with the way its fishing this year maybe its possible to catch 30 mullet.

but from this thread, would i be right in saying a bunch of harbour reds as bait
but what hooks
and which rig

You'd be right. size 4 hooks work fine for me (have been accused of using meat hook size 2s also - but then I'm hedging bets :))

That George (Badger2) is a git. Keeps promising his stock as prizes, makes me feel obligated. So, five DVices, and I quite liked the "Most unusual fish" as to be declared by regulars of the area category that we did on the Marina. In the event of no fish being "Unusual", then biggest fish released, like in Dover.
BTW, to even up the numbers a little, I should like to fish for either HHAC or Team Essex, depending on who has the least on the day. No offence to TE, but they got loads of people fishing!!
Sorry Rob,

Speaking of which you may want to look at the links page of the SAS website. I done some tweaking over the weekend.

Already looked mate, thanks very much, was going to mail you later
Chris and myself are going to have a bit of a clean up in between casts on the bit of beach that we are going to fish on!!! is anyone else up for that on their bit of beach on the day?:).
Cheers
Tony
If the mullet are still about there'll be no time to clean up the beach between casts - but if it is slow I will gladly fill a bag.

Just out of interest, fished the midday tide at Widewater beach yesterday for a few hours. Water was flat calm and gin clear with tiny schoolies chasing fry right onto the beach. Had two golden grey mullet, a red mullet, couple of macks and a gar, several baby bass, a miniscule flounder and only narrowly missed a swimmer!

There I was, sat on the beach minding my own business when this dozy old sod wandered down to the water's edge, stripped off to reveal speedos - on a bloke of about 75:yucky::blink: - and then headed straight into the water about thirty yards from me. Fair enough, I thought, the beach is for all to enjoy, its a sunny day and I can live with the fact that he has about five miles of beach in either direction without a fisherman:uhuh::giveup:. Then he starts out using this incredibly slow crawl and starts going past me just as I was about to cast. I held my tongue and waited for him to pass, hoping he would not catch the line of my other rod, saying nowt but thinking plenty, and off he heads eastwards at this slow steady pace. I carry on fishing for a while then about fifteen minutes later back comes the old fella at the same pace - I couldn't work out how someone could swim that slow and not sink. Without a care in the world he swam right across me again only about thirty yards out. Luckily I was fishing really close in for mullet so he swam over them rather than into them, because if he had actually collided with the lines I would have been seriously miffed.
Then about half an hour later a macho type:showoff: comes by with a power crawl. He obviously reckoned he was part man part dolphin because he was ploughing through the water like Flipper on amphetamines, as equally oblivious to me as the old bloke earlier, and he only missed one line. On the other, he gave me a line bite that nearly yanked the rod off the tripod. I jumped up, grabbed the rod and called out something along the lines of "oh I say, do be careful, old chap!" but he carried on regardless. About five minutes later he too came back in the opposite direction, still churning up a wake bigger than the Ark Royal at top speed, went straight past my lines, gave me another line bite, still failed to notice and disappeared towards Lancing oblivious to my hearty suggestions that he keep going until he drowned :schmoll:. I can't believe that I then actually shouted after him "I hope you rip your bollox off on Lancing Pipe you ****er " I then had to turn round and apologise to two giggling ladies of a certain age who were sharing a salad lunch on one of those rocks that have replaced the groynes:oops:. I must have come across as an angling version of Victor Meldrew!

i am shocked
such profanities from one of our senior and most respected anglers in this southern fishing fraternity of ours
how on earth can you expect the youngsters follow your example and become the anglers of tomorrow respected and admired by all when this is their teaching
its about time you got your act together and lead by example
so in future i suggest that you do not hold back and save all the colourful language till the end!!!! get it out straight away man!

oh!! except for the macho one.... just in case :boxing::slap::black_eye
seriously though i know what you mean, similar happened to me at grand ave a few weeks ago not another beggar insight except me and the trunks from hell and i am pretty sure he was blo%dy well urinating as he swam passed ... well he had to be with that look on his face !
I'd have welcomed these guys down to Lancing beach yesterday - the inaction was riveting. Long periods of utter boredom punctuated with moments of frenzied excitement wondering what species of weed I'd pull in next. Vast bunches of red rag and chunks of mackerel must have had the crabs and shrimps thinking christmas had come early. If I'd had reindeer meat to try I probably would have convinced them!
Having gone down without the right rigs, I decided to pass some of the time making up new ones. Never a good plan on the beach is it? The moment I opened a pack of swivels, selected a couple and put the bag down on the box next to me, the only puff of wind to find it's way contrary to the prevailing wind from which I was well sheltered, blew the bag onto the stones ....... tried to snach it back....dropped the two swivels I was holding grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Dug around in the stygian depths of of my tackle box to glean a couple more and managed to finish off the rig ........... only to lose it first cast on a famously snag free beach somehow. ARRGGHHHHH!!! Second attempt saw me add my own tiny contribution in the form of small beads to the beach, followed by a few dozen crimps. I fine puzzle I've set for future archeologists :).
After three hours of shuffling shingle with my boots, with a supreme burst of lethargy, I managed to pack up. In true egalitarian fashion I've saved the bulk of the rag so that the shrimps and crabs at Shoreham can enjoy their fair share this afternoon.
My only consolation was watching a couple of blokes in kayaks trail redgills or whatever behind them to no effect for three hours with rods propped up behind the cockpits like dogem cars - at least my shoulders don't ache :)

It's between Worthing and Brighton and more exactly between Lancing and shoreham-by-sea.

I imagine you'll be coming down the M23 and then A23 to Brighton. Before you get to Brighton take the west bound A27 towards Worthing, turn off at the shoreham flyover towards shoreham town centre. When you reach the town centre turn right over the Adur bridge (a259 to Worthing) and then first turning on the left signposted shoreham beach (big roundabout with a garage and a pub). Turn right and just follow the signs to church of the good shepard and widewater. we'll be set up in the car park there.

the way things are going on the fishing front at the moment it would be fair to say that almost any species native to these shores could be caught at the moment.the summer fish are still around and the autumn fish are moving in, and now after a bit of colour has been put into the water this week by a small blow anything could be caught :fishing1:

I figure if there is so little of us in our group can we up our game by using 5 rods each if team numbers are less than 5 in total. just kidding of course, see you there mate, laters:)

Far western end of the widewater car park, you won't miss the tents ( or the smell of bacon lol).
Have to warn everyone that my earlier optimism regarding car park fees has proved premature. For the first time I can remember the company that leases the car park froom the council has decided to impose fees right til the end of September :(. But it's not too bad £1 for the whole day.
As its £5 for the pools, can we have a pool for those who dont want to fish for gars, as it was suggested that the gars wouldn't survive, but if fished for, they would be there in numbers and win the comp for somebody.

Hot Wad and Sussex Schumacher are right about gars along there. Even with C&R they don't seem to survive too well from the beach after being measured and it is possible if you get your tactics right to catch a shedload - even an idiot like me can get 'em, though not in the numbers that proper matchmen like Hot wad and Schuey can bang them out. I would be perfectly happy if gars were excluded, or at least limited, and have no intention of fishing for them on Saturday.
I feel exactly the same as Mark_s and jassyfa, I will not be fishing for gars, I hoped we could exclude them completely.
Wonder if anyone would be upset by this or if anyone is really keen to leave them in?
i am not saying exclude them, as if the fishing is crap then people will want to catch fish. I would prefer a pool for gars and a pool for no gars. Then if you are fishing in the none gar pool and you accidently catch a gar you can just put it back and not count it.
A lot of debate about garfish here and so I think we have to make a reasonable decision. As the emphasis is on fun and cameraderie and we don't want a pile of dead fish littering the beach, lets stipulate here and now that there's a maximum of 2 garfish per angler.
That way, if the fishing does turn out to be slow at least people have the option. I'll update the first page accordingly.
Seems fair enough to me, Steve. Nothing to stop folk fishing for them if they want to but with only two counting it will hardly be worth it in terms of match weights as even a good one of 60 cm only gets 23 points, slightly less than a flounder of 28cm. Gonna have a little practice down there tomorrow....
Good idea on the 2 gar per person, i was thinkinga long the lines of having a percentage of pools for those who do want to fish for gar and those who dont. The 2 gar per person takes out the maths involved.
Also what are the pools for, are we having biggest round (not including gar) biggest flat and biggest bag.

There will be a pools prize for biggest bag , biggest round and biggest flat - apart from those the other prizes will be split up in as novel and as equitable way possible. For example, most unusual catch, wooden spoon etc.
I particularly liked the way Mark and Hugh handled the last couple of meets and if he doesn't mind I'll ask Mark for his input in this respect.
Aslo need to point out that only one prize can be won per angler to spread the money and Kudos evenly. So if for example you win biggest bag, you can't also win largest round - it would filter down to next sized fish.

That's a great shame James :( But by all means please bring the kids down. At the end of the day this really is a social meet and winning is not the important thing.
I know kids boredom threshold is low, but with the Breakfast /BBQ tent etc on the go there is scope for them to wander a little and allow you to dangle a line ( and them too why not?). I don't know their ages of course but this is a family friendly event, I'll leave it up to you.
Hugh is bringing the familly down to fish by the way, so you wouldn't be the only one "handicapped" lol.
Steve
Just spotted the rule change on gar. I don't agree. So we all have to just chuck out worms on flapper rigs cos that's proper fishing right? By all means have a maximum but only 2 is pathetic. Same goes for mackerel in my mind. The Worthing matches allow 5lb I think and so do the Marina matches run by Brighton Palace Pier Club. It's gonna be flat and clear and these are 2 of the mainstay fish at this time of year so why ban them? They're not that easy to cach without lures anyway.
Both Gar & Mackerel are a good winter fish strip bait so no problem with keeping them up to a point. Are we going to ban whiting & pout too becasue they're easy to cach and they die and you don't want to take home 20lb of them to eat? Also I've heard that the Golden Greys can be suicidal so let's ban them as well. So what does that leave us. Hmmm, Bass, Cod, eels & flatties. Sure to be loads of them about on a nice calm day with a clear sea.
If you're going to have a comp then let's have one and allow people to try to catch the fish in front of them, if not then just make it a meet and still allow people to catch the fish in front of them.
Rant over, see you Saturday.

Well Judge would you happy with 2 pools as suggested earlier, 1 for gar and 1 without. Then just pick what pool you want to fish in. Thats way everybody is happy.
i thought the point of this meet/comp was a social one,if the real comp minded ones want to fish a comp then so be it but im not telling my 8yr old he cant catch gars or mack cos they dont count.
perhaps one of the more competition minded people would like to explain it to him.

I think I see a compromise here. If gars counted as a preset no of points, as we have done previously with eels and dogfish, then they can be T-barred off as soon as the neighbouring angler has seen it. Wouldnt even need to touch them then. Obviously there would be a few casualties, cos they sometimes deep hook, but it would minimise it all. Anyhow, I dont know what all the fuss is about. I'm gonna win on Gurnard...!!
Rob, have you not seen me catching threshers off widewater?? ;)

I wish the King Alfred swimming pool in Hove still had the major and minor pools...one could be full of Gars and the other full of wellies and old bikes and everyone would be happy then:g:. This is a hoot of a day meet so let's all have one:clap3:. Well, my son and I will:)...Come on all! we are going to need a big cheesey grin for Seans' photo shoot at the end of the day:schmoll:.
See you all on Saturday.

What im trying to suggest is to have 2 pools. 1 for gars and mackeral and the second pool for no gars and mackeral. If you want to catch gars then pay for the gar pool if you dont then pay for the non gar pool.
This should make everybody happy as its up to competitior when they pay their pool money for what pool they go in. Also if the majority for example want to fish for gars then that pool would be bigger and the payout bigger.
Fishyrob have you got my maddies on order?
Given what JudgeP and Top Cat have to say I would just say that I have no objection to gars counting if the majority want to fish for them - I was simply saying I will not be fishing for them and would be perfectly happy for them to be excluded. I definitely do not believe macks should count but again - if the majority think they should then I have no problem with that.
Sorry Jassyfa - don't like the idea of two separate pools though. I doubt that either a gar or a mack will win best round, and if someone wants to go for heaviest bag on gars and macks that's fine by me.

Im more concerned about the comment of gars dying. I can just imagine the PC brigade after the comp. I will not be fishing for gars either.
Another question for Judge, If you are using a lure for the gars I presume that is 1 rod with 1 hook, unless you are using a treble hook (I dont use lures so im not sure how many hooks they have), I would presume you are fishing a big bait for bass with the 2nd rod (if you are using 2 rods) are you goin gto have time to stop lure fishing to grab that second rod. That question is not meant to sound crappy, but its an honest question.
Remenber your mugs or fine china for tea or coffee when you have your cooked breakie this Saturday just before the fun fishing meet!. I recomend the Micks grill:thumbs:.

Tony
I think the vast majority of anglers want to come along for the fun, catch the local fish (whatever they are), and see who caught most at the end. Banning Gar (and mackerel in my mind), possibly cuts out a lot of the "catching the local fish" bit and could spoil the fun.
So seeing as I brought it up I should suggest a workable compromise. Let's say 5 Garfish to count. This should:
1 - Help anglers who want to enter the friendly comp and catch fish to actually catch something.
2 - Stop too many dead'uns. I beleive most anglers will not catch that many anyway.
3 - Avoid complications over different pools for those who want to put money on it.
As for lures, I assumed they were banned, and was saying that catching mackerel without them would not be so easy as to make their inclusion silly.

Just my tuppence worth.
Lets leave it to the organisers to settle the final rules for the comp on the day. Its a FUN meet and was always more of a social as far as i know.
As a fishing newbie i find all the rule bickering and debate very off-putting. I can see why so many club members are scared off from coming to meets.
Social , fun fishing, grub and possibly booze at the end. Lets keep fishing fun and leave all the serious competition stuff for the serious comps.
Look forward to seeing you all, and if any fellow newbies are reading this, i will not be targeting any specific species as i simply do not know how to. So feel free to join me in the novice corner of the beach. It will be conveniently situated in front of the BBQ grill:clap2:
Thanks

I believe the organisers have made their desicion on the gars and its 2 gar per person.

I say dont have a money pool in the first place then there wont be any bickering between the match anglers that just want the dosh.........why not take the £'s out of the equasion then FUN will be had by ALL
well said mr b this is a fun meet a social event if people want a comp them why not organise one?
can match anglers actually switch off and just have fun?
Or for those who do want pools just pay for the pools you want to enter, if you dont want to fish for gars then dont enter biggest bag, just enter the biggest round and biggest flat, after all anybody could win those pools.

Considering this event has been organized by the SAS as a fun event i would like to see any wouldbe prize pools ( if there needs to be one ) split 60% to the TCT...30% prize fund....10% SAS fund
Anyone got a problem with that?

What is SAS (I presume its shoreham angling society) and what is TCT? Also if the SAS are providing tea and coffee and ? food during this event, then shouldnt they have a bigger percentage of the pools money.
This is getting silly - why start trying to change everything Mr B? We have had meets before with a pool before without this hassle and without complications. Also, if it is meant to be an inter county comp then everyone is fishing a friendly match in teams, with the team getting the highest average points per angler winning. It only takes a few seconds to record a fish and get it witnessed.
We are all agreed that the match bit is secondary to the social side but nevertheless it is a match, just like the one we had at the Marina for the South v South East. Obviously anyone who just wants to fish as an individual can presumably do so without recording any points to go towards a team total.
So this is just about the optional pool. Surely anyone who doesn't want to enter the pool, or doesn't like the rules for the pool simply keeps their cash in their pocket?

Well said Mark.
This event is supposed to "bridge" the gap between fun and competition. The prizes are small by comparison to normal events and the whole idea is to cater for all abilities and anglers. Teams are there for the kudos of winning for their county and not for prizes - the reward as such is meeting up with a friendly bunch of anglers and having a good days fishing.
The pools, as stated, are entirely optional and are there to give just a little edge to those of a more competitive nature. You can't please all the people all the time as is famously said, but I think we have made every effort to give something to everyone.
On the restriction front, the gar fish rule doesn't ban them from being caught, but neither does it permit the unsightly and publically unacceptable scenario of a beach littered with dead fish. Neither do we want surely, a mass of feathering until everyone has bagged up any limit on mackerel. Also, there is no saying people cannot fish for these species if they wish to fill their freezers - everyone is free to strike the balance between the "pot" and the competition. I would draw all anglers attention to the very recent fuss over dead smoothhounds on the IOW and I'm certain non of us wish to be associated with such deplorable slaughter. ( I hasten to add here that I do not make any kind of judgement on that episode, it has been dealt with by those concerned, lessons learned and the forum very effectively served it's purpose. Hats off to the organisers who responded honestly and rapidy too).
Gentlemen! this whole comp is about enjoying a days fishing - lets keep focused on what's important:)
What is SAS (I presume its shoreham angling society) and what is TCT? Also if the SAS are providing tea and coffee and ? food during this event, then shouldnt they have a bigger percentage of the pools money.
SAS is shoreham angling squad and the TCT is the Teenage Cancer Trust, who we have adopted as the club charity and for whom we have raised nearly £2000 over the past year.
We are happy to provide tea and coffee and breakfast for all participants as this is the nature of the club. We exist to promote friendly angling, education and teaching and to look after our prime venue - shoreham west arm. We charge no fees and simply ask that members agree to the aims of the club. All our funds are raised through sponsorship, events and donation. This is why we're generally not big on prizes - just pure enjotment of the sport and giving a little to charity.
As I've said many times before, there is nothig wrong with out and out competition angling, we just try and cater for those who also just want the social side as well as good fishing :)
Just to clear the remaining up, all pools money will be 100% given back out in prizes. This is not ans SAS event as such - just our turn to host the excellent comps as held by the other counties.
We'll have a bucket for donations to the TCT and any excess money from the BBQ will go to club funds, but this is not about fundraising - just FUN!!!:clap2:
We'll have a bucket for donations to the TCT FUN!!!:clap2:
Well that solves the dead Garfish problem then!
A genuine question this time. Are lures / feathers allowed in the comp then?

No problem with lures or feathers as long as the hook restrictions are adhered to.:)

Does that mean that Bloated cod will be wearing his lucky feather boa?
Gentlemen and ladies of course.
Well I hope Saturday yields more than this morning's efforts, fished the tide right up from 6:00am to high water (6.7m) right at the end of Widewater and guess what, blanked as did my mate. Not even a touch, even the crabs left the baits alone.
Fished the East Arm yesterday and couldn't put a foot wrong, bass to 2 and 1/2 pounds, mackeral, Gurnard and the odd sprat to feathers, plus codling to a pound, same time fished, same circumstances, how odd???
Anyway, good luck Saturday, hope to be down depending on work committments.
Regards, TD

That's a great shame James :( But by all means please bring the kids down. At the end of the day this really is a social meet and winning is not the important thing.
I know kids boredom threshold is low, but with the Breakfast /BBQ tent etc on the go there is scope for them to wander a little and allow you to dangle a line ( and them too why not?). I don't know their ages of course but this is a family friendly event, I'll leave it up to you.
Hugh is bringing the familly down to fish by the way, so you wouldn't be the only one "handicapped" lol.
Steve
thx steve the kids are 2 and 4 so hard work ... i agree definate handicapped but i'll try to
My problem is reds - was gonna dig some in tomorrow morning but now have another committment I can't get out of. There isn't anywhere that sells them around Sussex is there?
I Have a couple of questions
Firstly - all this talk of pools, as I have an extensive knowledge of match fishing (not) can you fish in these pools or are they for swimming only?
Secondly - what is the pull of the tide like on this beach, will I need super leads like Dungy or can I fish my light bass rod with 2 or 3 oz leads?
Lastly are there any young lovelies topless sunbathing?:yeah:
Can't count either:uhuh:

Forget the spares. The worms had migrated a few hundred yards. By the time I found them and began getting into the swing, the tide was forcing me off. 2000 worms, nope! 482 worms, yep. And on return to my vehicle, a parking ticket. Yippidee doodah, yipideeh yeah, I got a feeling, its gonna be a sh*t day........:(

Oh Fishy...you're a one you are.....psml here.:)
If I wasn't getting to Widewater early there'd be time in the morning to dig a few reds. Dead low tide up the river will be about 9.00 by my reckoning, though on these big tides the water doesn't go down very far!

The pools are for fishing in, hit the right one and forget the lottery, all joking aside, hit into the beach at the right time and with the right weather, you may clear up.
The tide pulls left to right, so a 4oz will suffice, although given the current weather a couple of BB would do.
Lovelies in Shoreham, where have you been, topless, you must get out more.

I'f it's the same one I'm trying to shake off then he must be feeling miserable and will definitely need looking after. Shame you can't make it mate, but family comes first and thanks for letting us know.
Hope he gets better soon.
A note on the pools for those that aren't familiar with them.
It's an optional £5 put into a kitty, the total then split up for various prizes. On Bigger out and out matches these sums may be greater and the number of prizes limited to ensure a high return to the winners of each category - for example "biggest bag" , "biggest round fish" and "biggest flat fish". However in this friendly we aim to distribute the pools money further round in ways including the above but also for things such as "best specimen fish" most "unusual catch" etc etc. This way more people stand a chance of winning something and it's less serious.
This idea has been successful on the past two meets and we wouldn't want to change that:) The organisers will decide by consensus on the splits on the day along the same lines as Mark and Hugh did at the Marina and Dover.
Is it also 1 pool win per person? as the south vs south east match.
I'm afraid i'm going to have to do a Jamie Donnelly on you lot tomorrow as i'm also ill. It's bloody annoying as i've been unable to attend the previous meets during the summer due to playing cricket.....and now i'm ill, sods law.:schmoll:

I also hope ther's some serious hunger for the breakfasts in the morning ! lol - Brad we may be holding to that "eat for two" comment lmao

No need, but thanks for the offer :)
Breakfast is on the beach - we have a tent and providing the wind is not too strong a gazebo going up. Breakfast is bacon eggs tea coffee etc and is free.
BBQ after the event is Burgers and hot dogs (onions, mustard ketchup etc) and a genuine paella for those that want to try it - this is not free but guaranteed CHEAP! (just a quid for a decent burger for example)

I'm also going to have to do a JD but not due to illness. Gotta spend the day fixing my girlfriend's car to get it through it's MOT and replace the front door frame. unfortunatly can't get out of doing it cause if her car isn't on the road then she can't get to work and garages are too expensive!
Got a new rod to try out too so doubly gutted.
Good luck to everyone who is fishing tomorrow and hopefully there will be a few fish out.

Just so, Hot Wad! Won't even waste the energy trying to dig down the lower stretch.
I can vouch for the genuine paella as I saw Steve getting the base started today...Yes I was there!!!, mind you I turned up after the Mesito miester had added the all important herbs and spices which he was pouring into a secure military flask that had TOP KNOTCH written all over it. The visit and chat was nice however entering and leaving his establishment was somewhat puzzling when blindfolded. I'd say that your taste buds are in for a good one chaps!:).

hi g

whats the weather like its 97 in the shade here
Okay folks – the match results are as follows.
Individual Results
First was Ally Harvey with 30 fish for 331 points. He got £40 plus ten Tronix rigs
Second was Alan T with 6 fish for 275 points
Third was Mark_S with 6 fish for 154 points
Best round fish was won by Weehaggis with a nice bass of 50cm for 122 points. He got £25 plus 10 Tronix rigs
Best Flat was won by Badger2 with a flounder of 22cm for 10 points. He got £25 and since he is Tronix tackle he kindly put his ten rigs in as a raffle prize.
Most fish was won by Alan T for £15 plus ten Tronix rigs (Ally and Badger2 had more and Mark_S had the same as Alan but we limited it to one prize per angler from the pool to spread the prizes as widely as possible)
Most species was won by Mark_S for £15 plus ten Tronix rigs (same number of species as Alan T but Alan won the most fish prize)
Most unusual fish was won by to sjp1979 with a Gurnard for £10 plus ten Tronix rigs (Ally also had a gurnard but had already won the match)
Team Results
There were a total of 27 anglers booked in. My records show that 4 were from Team Essex, 3 from Team Extreme, and 2 (Brad B and - rather dodgily - Fishyrob) flying the Hampshire banner, leaving the other 18 as SAS members.
Based on a straightforward average score per angler. The results work out as follows
SAS total points 1019 making an average of 56.6 points per angler
Team Essex 428 points making an average of 107 points per angler
Team Extreme 276 points making an average of 92 points per angler
Hampshire 83 points making an average of 41.5 points per angler
This makes Team Essex (Alan T, Jassyfa, sjp1979 and Issy) the winners.
It’s a dodgy way of working it out because the bigger teams are disadvantaged by having so many members, but if you take the best two or three then the samller team is disadvantaged by having fewer chances at getting two or three good scores. Who cares anyway – a good time was had by all!
Thanks
Special thanks to George (Badger2) of Tronix for the great prizes he donated both for the match and the raffle as well as providing goody bags for every angler.
Special thanks also to Mike Perfect of Prime Angling in Worthing for donating a lovely Bass Road to be raffled off for SAS funds.
Special thanks also to Fishyrob for donating some D-Vices for the raffle.
I think we raised about £80 for SAS funds with the raffle..I know Barry won first prize in the raffle for the Bass rod. Sorry I can’t remember who won the other two prizes.
Top marks to Steve (Mesito) and Mike (BloatedCod) for the superb grub and to everyone else from SAS who worked so hard to ensure things went superbly.
And lastly, well done to all who participated and made it a fun event.

Sorry folks - I had the Essex team down as containing 5 members but it was in fact only 4. As a result, the team victors on the day were Team Essex with 428 points for an average score per angler of 107. Well done to our visitors, especially to Alan T whose score of 275 made up a major chunk of their overall total.
