View Full Version : Beach Fishing Brazil
Firstly, hello to all who use the WSF forums. I found the site in my quest for info on fishing the Praia do Forte area of Brazil. We have just booked for Oct 2006 and any info on fishing this stretch of coastline will be very much apprieciated!
I have never fished outside of Europe before and intend making the most of this 2 week trip by adding as many new species to my caught list as possible.
Any advice whatsoever ..tackle, species ....terminal gear. I want to go well geared up the type of fishing out there.
Thanks in advance, Phil.H
Welcome To the WSF Phil..
Lets hope someone can help you out....

Hi Phil
Brazil is one of those places often mentioned in big-game fishing circles because of its potential for huge Blue Marlin. In fact the World All-Tackle record of 1402lbs comes from Vitoria, somewhat further south, as do many of the White Marlin line class records. But that's offshore and, as far as I'm aware, there are very few charter boats, the vast majority are privately owned.
But back to your request about beach fishing. And firstly let me make clear that neither I, nor from what I'm aware any of our members, have visited this area before.
Any way you'll be in the tropical Atlantic so, providing there's not too much inshore commercial fishing, you'd expect species like the ubiquitious Jacks and Snapper, plus possibly Bonefish and Tarpon. On the bottom there're likely to be species of Ray.
So unless you're after the Rays, where heavy beach casting tackle would be necessary, I would suggest you take a spinning rod(s) with a selection of surface popping lures. In addition some hooks for bait and livebait fishing, plus fairly heavy mono and wire for leaders. Rapalas are also worth taking if there's a possibility you can get one of the local fisherman to take you out beyond the surf line.
Seriously though I suspect your best course of action is to post to one of the US forums - there's a range identified on our Club's web site - Forums (http://www.scbi.org.uk/pages/Forums_LinksToOtherForums.Asp) - or a Spanish one, Carax - JACK (http://www.carax.com). I know Brazil was a former Portugese colony but the administrator of that site in particular has fished loads of 'different' places.
The other point you might wish to explore is the possibility of fishing in the local rivers for Peacock Bass - in my view one of the finest fighting freshwater fish. They're agressive and do they jump!
One last point please do remember that, away from the hotels, you'll be 'cheek and jowl' with the 3rd world. Just be very cautious of going off the 'beaten track' by yourself.
It will certainly be interesting to see what you manage to catch. Please make sure you post back to this forum.
Kindest regards and Best of Luck
Dave
Thanks Dave. Iwill have a read through some of the American sites to see what they have on the area and I won't be going off the beaten track without local company!
Unfortunatly its not just a fishing holiday so I will be staying close to the hotel but hope to persuade somebody local to show me the ropes on one or two of the marks they fish.
Can't wait to go but until then Thornies from the mouth of the Mersey will have to do!

Whoops! Sorry Phil I got my .com and .net muddled up. The Spanish web site is actually - http://www.caranx.net . You'll see that there are separate forums for Spanish and English postings and that the focus is on jigging and popper fishing. Certainly some of the respondents 'push' these techniques to the absolute limit and target big Tuna plus Sailfish, or occasional Marlin, on this type of gear.
For others that might also read this thread you'll find the way that their techniques have evolved to particular challenges fascinating. And some, certainly the advances in jig technology, have applications in our waters.

Shame I didn't see this earlier, I know that part of Brazil well and I know the species he could have caught.
PM me if anyone wants to know about any part of that world.

This could be my lucky day. Trying to talk the wife into trying a different part of the world for beach fishing only.
Do not have to catch the largest fish in the sea, however if the rod tip rattles, the scenary is good, with a clean sunny beach and the wife is happy. It could be a lot more entertaining than Blue Anchor Wall (Somerset) in Winter.
Have fished 'Gambia' a lot but a different venue could be interesting

HI Nick
And welcome to this forum. The world is literally your oyster! There're just so many places that you might wish to try and I guess throughout it will be achieving that balance with your wife's interest. I assume she doesn't fish.
Obviously Richie10 could give you advice on Brazil. But looking through recent posts on the International forums places like Tobago and also Namibia (plus Angola) come to mind. Perhaps the latter though's a bit too far away from 'creature comforts'?
So perhaps the Caribbean or Central America might appeal? Or how about the 'States? I've shore fished in Florida and also Massachusetts. But there's good shore fishing in many of those states in between. And again recently there was a posting I contributed to regarding East Cape in the Sea of Cortez, Baja, Mexico. There's good beach fishing there although most of its fairly active, following the bait shoals.
Even further afield, although it doesn't have a wonderful night life, is Ascension Island. It's way in the middle of no where - midway between Brazil and Angola and 500 miles south of the Equator. And the only way to get there is by RAF transport, it's en route to the Falklands! But the shore fishing's spectacular! You'd get bored with catching mainly 10 to 20lb Black Jacks - scrap like hell - plus Amberjacks, Dorado and Rainbow Runner also put in an appearance. Then if you feel up to it there're masses of 100lb plus Sharks, mainly Galapagos from the shore, and also, during the summer, Yellowfin Tuna will chase bait literally up onto the beach. But as I said limited night life that's unless your wife's into watching the huge Green Turtles laying eggs and strange Land Crabs.
Then in the Antipodes there're even places where you can target Black Marlin from the shore. But perhaps that's going too far?
I've tried to give you some ideas. If you want specific information on any of them though just post again.

I forgot!
The first time I went there the whole island's population turned out to watch the 'fireworks'. The Americans who maintain a presence on the island were testing out ICBMs - Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles - they're launched from the mid-West and targeted to land 20 miles off the 'Volcano Club' on the base, in the ocean. There were five inbound and you got to see the trails as they re-enter the atmosphere.
Alright that's probably not going to tempt you, but the fishing might.

Panama Jack,
Any information regarding Tobago I would be more than grateful to receive

Hi Nick
There's a comprehensive guide on fishing in Tobago on this web site - http://www.mytobago.info/fishing.php. It's written by a chap called Steve Pitts from Bristol. I gather he's been there quite a few times and quite a lot of what he tries, other than offshore Big Game fishing, is DIY-ing from the shore.
The Jacks are fun, but if you want a real challenge try the Bonefish on light spin or fly gear. But for the ultimate from the shore the Tarpon are the thing to try - fast runs and loads of head shaking, gill rattling jumps! You realise of course you'll never quite see an evening's dogfish bashing in the Bristol Channel in quite the same light again.
Kindest regards
Dave

Hi Nick
I know we're going way, way off the original topic thread that covered Brazil. But hopefully there aren't any 'thought police' around.
Any rate exploring that site I noticed there's a forum and on it I picked up this thread which had a number of different, fairly knowledgeable anglers contributing to. It's http://www.mytobago.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3083&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0There's a wealth of information on specific shore marks and also bits on how to get out in a boat 'on the cheap'. Might be worth examining, or starting your own thread?

Dave,
Thanks for the direction, followed the leads as reccomended, the help and advice has been tremendous. Have arranged to meet with certain charactors, hopefully this will lead to some very good fishing and stories that I will have great delight in expanding and warping. As all good fisherman do.

Hi Nick
Glad it's been of some help. Of course Steve doesn't live a 'million miles' away from you.
If you do get to Tobago though, or any of those other Caribbean venues that Steve loves visiting please report back on your experiences.

Hi Dave
And firstly welcome to the forum. Richie10 is the only one on the forum I've seen with experience of Brazilian coastal waters. Although I know others have targeted Peacock Bass in freshwater. They're quite a challenge!
However, in the past, I have seen posts on the International forum of http://www.ukswff.co.uk and the 'Caribbean' -alright the Americans are a tad parochial - forum of http://www.reel-time.com. Both are fly fishing forums, but at least some of their members should be able to offer you some advice. Either that or use the SEARCH facility on them.
Hope that at least gives you a starting point.
Dave
I'm off to Fortaleza, north-east Brazil first week in august. I have three free days to go fishing. Any advice gratefully received Richie10. I'll be sure to post back on what I get up to.

Forteleza, a nice city and some good fishing opportunities.
If you are staying in the city and don't have much opportunity to get out, then the city offers some opportunities. There are some stone jetties that allow you to fish further out but I have never had much luck, however on the beach if you fish close in you have an opportunity to catch pompano and paradise fish and the ever present catfish(be careful the fins can punture and sting but it is not painful, also don't kill them for the locals they never want the catfish in the end), bait can be obtained at supermarkets(raw prawn) or collected(sand fleas). There is a beach eastwards that is good for fishing, the name escapes me a bit further out of town, try to get an evening tide and fish larger baits such as squid, fillets or whole prawn(remember the bait elastic!) for larger speices such as rays and redfish.
Along the front at night there are guys advertising freshwater fishing trips to catch Peacock bass in inland lakes, the fish are nothing like what you get in the amason but maybe worth a try. Not been with them myself as I remember quite expensive and not like when I fished the amazon!
Have fun, i know you will!
Rich
Hopefully going to be beach fishing in Vitoria in October. Any info on likely species from the local beaches would be gratefully appreciated.
Cheers

Definately catfish! Mind the fins can give you a nasty cut and slightly venomous.
Types of Drum, small sharks, Tarpon, snook, bluefish and pompano.
Locals use raw shrimp and peices of fish, try and get hold of some squid(not easy) usually sorts out the bigger fish.
Good luck and post pics!
Hi Richie10,
Do you have any contacts in the Vitoria area of Brazil that we could speak with.
We will be going in October and really need to get an insight into the beach fishing there.
Any specific info will be appreciated.
Best Regards

Hi Barry
I've similarly tried looking on American forums to see if there've been any postings, but no joy to-date. Given that both the All Tackle World records for Blue and White Marlin were taken off Vitoria all reference is to offshore fishing. Although the national tourist board site does make reference to locals using inshore fish traps and cast nets from the beach.
I know it's some way away from Vitoria, and inland to boot, but there was a post on a fly fishing web site by a Brit - unfortunately not replied to - who's currently on a 3 month posting to Sao Paulo - http://reel-time.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47689&highlight=Brazil. Perhaps it's worth contacting him through that thread just to see wha, if anything, he's been able to glean.

One other suggestion would be to post to the TripAdvisor forum - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g294280-i1045-Brazil.html. There're currently 7 pages of posts, none that I could necessarily see on Vitoria though, regarding 'Fishing' in Brazil.
Dave
Thanks for the info, I have posted on Trip Advisor site.
