I looked into this seriously a year ago but decided in the end that all the hassle of transporting and detransporting would mean I'd soon lose interest. I also discovered that what I wanted to use the kayak for - bass in the shallows of an estuary might get quite dangerous at the very time that the fishing should be best - maximum ebb, and that at 57 I might be struggling to paddle as fast as the current was washing me out. Then I found this invention and was half tempted but in the end went for a moored Warrior boat.

I'm still very tempted, I tried one at the Southampton Boat Show, superb for fishing as you can paddle with no hands. Got to be a lot easier than a Warrior for launching!
I fished from a Kayak in North Carolina, great fun, but overdid it one day and ended up rolling in the surf. You are right, they can be dangerous in the wrong place!
I've been doing a lot of research into this, however my main fishing area would be the Solent and the ships wakes are highly unpredictacle and quite large at times. That fact is casting serious doubts in my mind.

i fish from my yak in the solent area, dont let the wash put you off, southampton water can offer good shelter when the weather is bad. also good marks in dorset and east hampshire. check out the forums already mentioned, loads of yakkers in the solent area
