View Full Version : South Vs South East Friendly Match - Brighton Marina - 28 July 2007
This replaces the original first post because I assume that all who are interested have already signalled their intentions.
Details for the meet on Saturday.
For info on getting to the Marina. Click here http://www.bmwaterfrontshopping.com/howtofindus.htm and there are maps from every conceivable direction.
When entering the Marina, you will come down a slope with Asda on your left hand side and the multi storey car park on your right. At the bottom of the slope is a roundabout. If you turn right at this roundabout you will see a McDonalds on the right hand side of the road. The Tackle Box is up on the left hand side. There is a car park at the back of McDonalds and you can park in here for a bit if there is space available.
We will meet up from around 4pm at The Tackle Box at Brighton Marina. I reckon an hour or so of meeting and greeting, milling about, general chit-chat, collecting bait, buying tackle, organising ferrying down of anglers plus kit to the East Arm and getting cars parked up in the multi storey.
Anyone arriving later than 5pm or so will need to park their car in the multi storey and make their own way down to the East Arm. Or you can drive down to the East Arm, bring your kit along to here we’ll be (somewhere after Peg 26) then drive back to the multi storey, park up and head back to the East Arm on foot without having to lug your kit. For info on directions within the Marina http://www.brightonmarina-seafishing.co.uk/index.htm go here.
Any who want to arrive earlier to get on down to the Arm and start pleasure fishing are welcome to do so – we’ll catch up with you later. Bear in mind though there may be an additional charge for the period up to 6pm.
The draw for the match will take place at 5.45 pm. By then we will know how many anglers we have, how many free pegs we have and therefore how many double and triple pegs we’ll need. Once the draw is done and, for those who are entering, the pool money collected, we should have plenty of time to get sorted to fish the match which begins at 6.30pm and runs until 11.30pm.
I will bring with me enough scorecards, plus SAMF length to points charts. The scorecards also have the rules on them and the NFSA minimum sizes we are fishing to. Please could you bring pens, measures and something to lean on when recording fish – a clipboard or a piece of card is ideal.
If the Arms are closed to fishing on the day due to windy conditions, we will still meet at The Tackle Box and decide on an alternative venue which will be within a few miles.
If the weather forecast on Friday suggests that on Saturday the Arm will be unfishable I will post an alternative venue here around 8pm. The current forecast is for very light WSW winds on Saturday and sunny skies! After a couple of days of it blowing quite hard from the SW this will hopefully result in some excellent catches.
Finally, if you need to speak to me for any reason, my mobile number is 07850 713438.
Look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday afternoon.
i would like to attend but as you can see i only joined the begining of the month so is that a problem?
i understand if it is!

No problems as long as you enjoy your fishing and can give and take the banter
I think a list of names for us in the essex, kent area should have a list of names for those who are going to fish.
Sorry lads, can't make it apart from the problems with the night fishing, I might not have a car and I am also committed to help out on a cycle race on the Sunday. Hope you all have a good time see you at the next one.

sorry, but i can't make it either.got a boat trip booked out of dover.good luck to you all and i hope it goes well.....dave.:)
So its me and wriggy then. Come on how unfair is that, the two of us vs the whole south coast. Perhaps I should fish left handed to make it more fair?
Im in mate! Put my name down. :)
I am a possible, but wont know until a few days before due to work.
Sorry folks as I said im the last threads any time in July is a no go for me as I am on call 24/7 for work

Just posted this on South Forum in response to a query.
How do you propose fishing positions will be decided?
Open to suggestions really. The arm is pegged already. If we have enough to justify booking a stretch of the arm - advice please on minumum numbers, Fishyrob - then we could draw pegs but divide the total number of pegs into two groupings, one for each team, so that members from opposite teams are adjacent to each other - the aim being to ensure that all fish are signed for by a member of the opposite team. We'd need to make allowance for variable numbers on each side. If not going for pegged then a walk off with the proviso that any fish are signed for by a member of the other team. I'd be happy either way.
A tweak on that could be that if people want to fish in pairs so they're with someone they know then we could divide the pegs into groups of double pegs.
If we do not have enough to warrant booking our own dedicated length of the arm then it will have to be a walk off rover in pairs, threes or fours made up from both teams - that way we could keep to fish being signed for by someone from the oppo side.
The main aim is to have a sociable and friendly meet with an equally friendly comp. Since that's all pretty much off the top of my head, if anyone has better suggestions let's have 'em
With the Essex vs kent matches we had average length for each angler e.g ten essex anglers catch 10 metres in fish eguals 1 metre each. 12 kent anglers catch 10 metres in fish equals 83cm each hence essex wins.
However I feel if the south east team struggle to get a team then that would be at their advantage

That seems fair enough to me. Average length per angler is the only way I can think of to ensure that disparities in team numbers are accounted for. It might be to the advantage of the smaller team, but equally it could be to their disadvantage as a poor performance by one of the larger team has less of an effect on the overall figure for that team.
Lets see what the final numbers look like being - so far confirmed are 4 from South and 3 from South east. Surely we can do better than that!

personally, and no disrespect is meant here, i feel the 'length only' method is seriously flawed, and as such, would not put a penny into a pot. the fairest way, is to use the length = points method, as set out on the cards used my samf (worked out by Dick Penny and Ian wotsisname).
the idea being that an eel of 50cm, is not worth as much as a bass of 50cm, so the quality of the fish caught is represented fairly, i mean, how could a 50cm eel, be worth the same as a 50cm sole or bass ? a 50cm bass might weight 3-4lb, where as a 50cm eel might struggle to make 3/4lb.
it's easy to work out, and the end result is still a fair decision, based upon the average number of points per angler.
Hugh
That idea is fine with me, after all my 60cm doggie won biggest fish at Dungie yet Slayer had a heavier cod but was under 60cm. At the end of the day that cod deserved biggest fish.
Im more concerned about working out the winners between south east and south coast. If we could use your samf method for the teams aswell that would be fair.
Yes, Hugh, you're right and its my mistake for not saying what I originally meant, which was average POINTS per angler not average length. I should have read Jassyfa's post more closely. Not just saying that - in my earlier post I mentioned length to points as per SAMF tables. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
points method sounds the fairest to me but then i'll go with the majority, i just want to go fishing have a laugh and meet some of the posters in the flesh
Suggestion..............Team A has 14 anglers.....Team B 10 anglers...
Top 10 results from each team to decide team winners......advantage with team with higher turnout (as it should be ).....also creates a bit of pressure for team with higher numbers as you don't want to be one of the "did not count "crew.:)
At this rate I doubt team south east will get 10 fishermen. As long as the rules for the comp are decided then im fine. Remember there will be a return match on the south east coast.

Thus the home advantage (re-numbers )...swings both ways.....:)

i don't see the numbers making any odds, the advantage can work both ways, 3 anglers from tse might turn up, and catch loads, 30 might turn up for ts and make an awful average, simplest way is to average the whole score among the whole number of team members,
we're just making this complicated ! we'd have to add up all the individual scores anyways, so we may as well use em all,
jeez, i just wanna go fishing !!

UBD, Not sure it is to be a night session. Probably easier from the competition side to fish the comp in the day, and then anyone who wants a longer session can fish on.
are the south east anglers going to meet up on the way and then convoy (at the mo a very small one) down to the marina or would it be a case of find your own way and turn up as and when??
i know its early still but just wondered
If we could find somewhere siutable as Clackets lane could work for the Essex team but may be a detour for any of the kent lads
I'm in and will meet you Essex guys at Clackets
all we need now is what time and how long the comp is going to last

Thought it was a night session Rob,that was the idea of the Marina?...It's murder during the day there isnt it?
Okay - the confirmed South east team so far seems to be:
Jassyfa
Wriggy
Whopper
Misfit
with Cascars as a possible.
I've done a similar update on the South meets forum. Time for you to start rallying the troops Jassyfa old chum! Mind you, the South only has about 10 confirmed - and that assumes 2 of those will fish for the South when they might easily opt for the SE.
Thought it was a night session Rob,that was the idea of the Marina?...It's murder during the day there isnt it?
Hope you're coming along Ron!
The idea was always for a night session though I guess we could make it earlier with those who want to fish on into the early hours obviously being able to do so! The trouble is that with the tides being about 11ish, if we want to fish over the top of the tide we either have to kick off early or late.
My initial thoughts on timings were for us to meet up around 4pm to give us plenty of time for a bit of socialising and to aim for the match itself to run from something like 6.30pm to 11.30pm. That means that we fish the main flood tide basically and finish the comp relatively early so that those who have a long way to travel will be able to hit the road at something like a reasonable time. Plus it means we fish a good chunk of the match in daylight. Fishyrob and one or two others know the marina much better than me and will doubtless advise whether those timings are okay in terms of catching fish.
Just floating some ideas here though guys and trying to get us organised a bit- not trying to dictate anything. What do you reckon?
I will be speaking to Thames Rover and Ash regarding this comp, problem will be transport as neither of them drive.
sounds sensible to me but I'm easy for any time you decide

Good point - it being a summer Saturday, leaving Brighton at 8pm would not see you getting home four hours earlier than leaving at midnight! An evening into night match is defo the way we should go. For those who don't like night fishing, do bear in mind its very different on the Marina to fishing at night on a lonely beach.
so what's the contingency plan if the weather is pants and the marina gets closed?

Too funny. Ron, I will be looking to reserve a section of the wall, just for us. Thats why we need to get a good idea of how many. As for a backup venue, take your pick. Anwhere between Pevensey and Pagham is less than an hour from the marina. Maybe Seaford or Hove beaches?
how's it fishing at the mo Rob, or am I seeking an unfair advantage by asking you that

To be honest, I didnt go down there for a week. I have a booking Saturday so I can tell you more then. sea has a bit of colour, which can be good, but the tides are tiny at the mo, which last year was a bad thing, but this year it seems to me to be the exact opposite, more fish coming out on the smaller tides.Spiders were beggining their peeling thing when I was last there, and this usually brings a lot of fish inshore.
so what's the contingency plan if the weather is pants and the marina gets closed?
As Rob says there are plenty of beaches that are fishable in most conditions within a few miles in either direction. If the forecast is for really filthy weather with full-on SW, S or SE gales then we can cancel a day or two before and reschedule.
An update to keep the thread alive

Fingers crossed Rob but I suspect we may well miss the boat - the spiders are peeling all along the coast and there are hounds everywhere. Hard to believe the spiders will still be peeling in two weeks time :g:
You going to book us a stretch of arm? I reckon we have enough to justify it - about 26 or 27 in total so far.

Just put in the request for fourty bays, although I am hoping he will give us the whole arm. One thing everybody should be aware of is that the marina is private property, and there is a charge for fishing, about three quid per 12 hours I think.
Brilliant - thanks Rob. Forty bays should be ample. There are a few folk from the South Forum that I would still hope will add their name to the list.

So is there a fee. Is it £3 per angler you need Rob?

Thats fine be me, if he doesn't want to fish for team south east, then we dont want him.
Although for treason he should be hung drawn and quatered and then burnt on the stake. And if he is burnt on the stake we could then have a bbq, with pork chops and burgers cooking slowly on the fire, while he burns in the middle.
No fires allowed on the Marina, Jassyfa!
can we point at him and tut, then poke him with sharp sticks

Suggested Rules for the match. I know this all seems pretty anal but all I have done is crib standard rules and tweak 'em slightly. If anyone has any suggestions or gripes feel free to stick up here.
One thing - I have put in that we will be fishing to NFSA minimum sizes even though its a catch and release. I assume everyone is happy with that.
I will bring scorecards and length to points charts on the day. The scorecards will include the rules plus a table showing the NFSA minimum size limits. Thanks to BloatedCod we will also have some tape measures and the kit for doing the draw.
Rules for Catch and Release
1. All fish to be rounded down to the nearest cm, NFSA minimum limits apply.
2. Fish should be taken to the adjacent angler (ideally in a bucket of sea water) to be measured, witnessed and recorded on your score card. The fish must then be returned to the sea immediately in front of that angler. Fish for the table must be despatched and have their tail marked at this point.
3. Fish length, points and running total must be recorded and signed by the adjacent angler before the next cast is retrieved.
4. Match cards must be signed off, total points recorded and witnessed by the adjacent angler.
Other Rules
The match will be fished between 6.30pm and 11.30pm.
Fish hooked at or prior to 11.30pm may still be landed and will count.
Each angler will pair off with a member from the other team. If numbers are uneven then anglers will fish in threes as necessary – two from the larger team with one from the smaller.
Double and treble pegs will be allocated on the day.
Each pair or three will draw a double or treble peg as necessary.
Anglers may fish a maximum of 2 rods
Anglers may fish a maximum of 4 hooks, subject to an overall maximum of 3 hooks on any rod
Float fishing is permitted
Feathers are not permitted
Lures are permitted - a treble counts as three hooks
Weevers, Eels, Mackerel, Garfish, Sea Trout and all Shads do not count
The match will be decided by dividing the total points scored per team by the number of anglers fishing for that team to determine the average points per angler. The team with the highest average points per angler will be declared the winner.
Optional Pool
There shall be an optional pool of £5 per angler. The pool will be divided up among participating anglers at the end of the match as follows: 40% to the angler with the most individual points. 20% each to the anglers with the most sizeable fish, best flatfish and best round fish. An angler may only win one pool and having won one pool his score will not count in determining remaining pools.
for the south east lot only, where do we want to meet and when, remember the road from the M25 to brighton is always busy so lets not make it to late.
We could meet at Claxeckts lane (sorry spelling) or meet in Brighton by the marina.
I would prefer to have most of the team at Brighton at 5pm so we could have a mini meet and greet. But the desicion is in your hands.
Also if you could let me know who you are going with

Have to say that it could be bang on for a smut match. Young Vic found them last night, and there is only seven days to go. Anyone wanna bring me down 40 trawled peelers? Ron?

Does this mean 2 rods with pennels on for smuts?

Not sure why you would wynt to be using Pennels for the smuts to be honest. A good strong 2/0 is plenty. These are generally a lot smaller fish than the Selsey and Worthing giants that have been coming in. I would bet that if we get amongst them there will be very few doubles. Not quite sure why, but it is usually the same every year. Perhaps its not so attractive to the big females up this end for some reason.
So a single size 2/0 hook and 3 smaller hooks down the wall then or a size 2/0 flapper with the second rod going down the wall
what are we liable to catch from down the wall

Even from the beach not sure that many were/are using pennels - just a strong 2/0 plus strong snood line. Even big fish have fairly small mouths. If they're there they'll happily take a crab bait not much bigger than you'd use for flounders or eels.
Crab is pretty useful. I have a few shell-on frozen spiders that I will be bringing along but there won't be enough to go round, especially as some of them are bullets that I kept when things were looking desperate towards the end of the peel! I have promised a couple to Fuzzball already so he'll have first dibs. I am away working up north most of the week and will not be able to go crabbing so any and all who can get some crab are advised to do so - even hardbacks. If by some miracle I can get out later in the week and find a decent number of spiders I will gladly share what I'll have. If the spiders are still peeling up the Marina - and I believe they are - then baited drop nets or traps on the day will bring a few in.
I will meet you all there as i have this barbeque thing to go to first. Im not getting too competitve about it all and am mainly coming along for the craic and too meet people. Would be nice to catch a smut but if i dont im not too bothered! :)
Im gonna float fish with one rod, and put a big ish bait out with the other. Still cant see me getting any peelers tho!
All being well I should be able to get out early Saturday morning and, assuming they are there, I will gather as many spider peelers as I can find and bring them along on Saturday. Can't promise anything though cos if they ain't there I won't be able to find em.
Any one from the Southend area order your crab now, most of the tackle shops have them in stock. Order them for Friday and keep them in the fridge overnight.

a couple of questions about this match and can you please reply on this and the south east forum. A lot of these questions have been asked already but with this match and details going on both forum sites and loads of posts on both forum I thought we could have an up to date questions
1) how much to fish the marina
2) Is it the east or west arm we are fishing
3) where are we parking and how much is it
4) what fish are not counted in the comp
5) what bait would you recommend
6) What weights would you use
7) Do you need rod rests or can you use the wall
Most of these questions have been covered in the threads, Jassyfa, but here goes anyway.
1. Its £3 for 1 rod, £4 for two rods during the 12 hour period from 6pm to 6am. If we start fishing earlier, then its £3 first rod, £5 for two. during the period 6am to 6pm. In other words, if we were to start fishing at 5pm it would in theory cost us the day rate for the hour up to 6pm then we would be liable for the night rate from 6pm. Got stung by this before and personally, do not intend to start fishing until after 6pm! One of the reasons I suggested a 4pm meet is to allow for us doing a bit of socialising and getting set up in advance of starting to fish. By the time we've milled about, dome the intros and what have you it will probably be nearer 5pm before some of us start heading down to the East Arm
2. East Arm. Fishyrob has booked us a total of 40 bays.
3. We will park in the multi storey carpark and it is free. We will meet up at the Tackle Box which is by the McDonalds car park which itself is just by the multi storey (I'll post specific directions later on) and then once we're unloaded we can park most of the cars. A few of us will then use our cars to ferry everyone and their kit down to the East Arm as it is a fair old walk and there is no parking there for more than an hour. The ferrymen can then walk down to the East Arm from the multi storey unencumbered by tackle.
4. Based on various posts about preferences, mackerel, garfish and eels will not count. Nor will sea trout, weevers or shads.
5. Standard worm baits, mackerel and crab. If the smuts are still about then crab will be essential - peeler ideally but hardbacks at a push. As I have already posted if I can get hold of a load of spider peelers I will bring them along for all to use. If they are peeling at the marina we can use baited traps and drop nets to catch a few.
6. Usual weights - a 4 or 5oz gripper is usually ample and you may get away with less weight and plain leads some of the time.
7. Rod rests are not needed. Some folks to use a bit of tubing to protect their rod being scratched by the concrete.
Others are more expert in fishing the Marina than me so no doubt they'll correct me if I have anything wrong. For more info about fishing the Marina including charges and parking info go here: http://www.brightonmarina-seafishing.co.uk/index.htm The pic gallery will give a good idea of what the wall looks like, as will the galleries on fishyrob's site http://www.fishyrob.co.uk/
Anyone who has a drop net should bring it just in case there are some big fish hooked.
Cheers for the info, at least we have all the info we need (hopefully) together on one post.
Would it be possible at the meet to have a whip round for this (http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76049) appeal? Bigads is at a meet in Scotland next weekend and will be having a whip round there.
No probs - I'll mention it on the day, Cascars.
Hot Wad has kindly reminded me that although the Marina is reasonably spacious, because of the steps using long rods can be awkward if you want to blast a bait out. So some advice to those who have never fished the Marina before is that you should avoid bringing rods longer than 12ft if possible. 11ft bass or estuary rods are easiest.
A couple of South Forumers have argued in favour of Gars counting, though one has said they should not, and one wants a max of 5 macks to count as well. I am pretty firmly opposed to counting mackeral but have a fairly open mind regarding Gars. Please see the latest posts on the South Forum version of this thread for the full exchanges. Anyone from the South East got any views on this?
Most of the south east lot are estury fishermen where mackeral and gars are not fished for. this would give the South East an unfair advantage for this met. However remember the return leg is most probally going to be fished in an estury where flounders are the main fish.
The only reason im thinking of fishing the return leg on an estury is that the Thames is easier for everybody to get to. After all it isnt fair to fish the comp in North Essex as its to far for you lot and some of the kent lot and it isnt fair to fish it at Dungie or the south kent coast as its to far for some of the North Essex lot.

After talking with Dave yesterday, we now have Pegs 26 to end on the East arm. The reason is that these are currently closed due to Algae. Dave is going to try and get the algae cleaned up this week, but leave it closed for Saturday. If you go and find an angler already in your peg, we will have to fish it like a beach, and go to the next nearest peg. I will go and put some notes up on the stretch Saturday morning.
I popped down there for three hours yesterday, and it fished very poor. I stuck it out for smutts and blanked. All I saw come up were a few Bream. Much better tide for our bash though, so I should think it will fish a lot better.

does booking the wall not give us precedence over other anglers then ?
as for Garfish, the most basic of float set ups will catch gar, i've only done it twice, and have caught ok both times, in fact you'd have to forget to atach a float to not catch them on one ! assuming they're around of course, if people want them banned, then fine, but i personally would opt for a max of 5, or... the best two count from whatever you catch, not that i'll be wasting much time on them !

To the point it does, in that we get to put our reserved signs up etc. And during the week there would be no issues. But on a Saturday evening, with a perfect tide, it could be very busy. If there is no rain forecast I will put notices up on the Friday afternoon, which should help. Plus, technically the whole area is closed, with a chain across the walkway. However, yesterday people were completely ignoring the chain! I will ask the wardens to advise people of the situation also, but they arent there all of the time. What Dave doesnt want is conflicts with other anglers, which is fair enough. I reckon we will keep most of the bays pretty clear. I will also put an A board on the walkway above, which will help a lot.

I see what your saying but isnt it other anglers tough poo if they haevnt had the foresight to book a bit of the Marina? If there are fishermen on the reserved parts i think we are quite within our rights to "advise" them to move! Its rude for them to just ignore the reserved signs, i wouldnt do it so why should we turn a blind eye? It should be ok on the day though as long as the Marina stewards tell people that part of the Marina is booked :)

Hey Whopper. I have to say that reserving bays on the marina is unprecedented. It doesnt happen regularly like maybe it does on Dover Breakwater or regular match venues. Even the Palace Pier club, who routinely fish their competitions on the East arm, dont get reserved bits. The only other time I managed to reserve a bit was for a Radio Five Live show, where I blagged the first ten pegs. I think you are right, most civil anglers will observe the signs, but if there is an issue, then we ask politely. If they still dont move, we swallow. I will work as hard as I can to ensure the pegs are empty for us. The one area I can imagine there might be an issue is around pegs 55 to 57, as these are the most popular area in this whole stretch, and if people have turned up Friday night to fish until Sunday night, as many do, they wont be taking kindly to us moving them off for Saturday night, and I'm not getting more scars on my body over it. This is Brighton, very bohemian in the most, but with far more rednecks than most also.
The alternative is to not attempt to reserve anything, and have a walk off, or a limp off in Henry's case........

No walk off, I promised Henry! We will have more than enough pegs for the numbers expected so we just treat anglers in situ like we would pleasure anglers in a beach match. Before we draw we can try to exclude pegs already occupied by anglers.
Rob - which are the pegs where there are rocks? Might be an issue early on as the tide will be very low!

4pm at the Tackle Box which is just near McDonalds. Doubt we'll get down to the East Arm and set up until a fair bit later - the idea is for us all to meet up, have a chin wag, sort out the ferrying down to the East Arm arrangements, get the other cars parked up and so on. I'll post a full round-up of details plus directions within the Marina when I have time later in the week.
If there is an influx of decent fish I might stay on a bit, so those people travelling in my car beware

i'm going to try and dig some worms (lug) on friday pm and sat am tides, but they're still short tides and i don't know what the likely outcome will be, i'll see what i can do,
i can prob get rag from anglers den in pevensey, it's only farmed stuff though, £2 per 2oz (£16 per lb). i only every buy up to about 6 oz for a long session, not often i get through that even !
the tackle shops there might have some bait in.

If anyone wants Black lug, or Ragworm, give the Tackle Box a ring on 01273 696477, tell them its for the meet on Saturday, and they will put some by for you. Thats where we are meeting, so it saves risking cooking the bait in a hot car.
Im getting 1/2lb of rag (apparently they are biggies), 2 score of lug, pack of medium sandeels, some joey Mackeral (although i hope to catch a few for bait), so there will be plenty of bait going around Terry. Your more than welcome to share mine:)

***** VOUNTEERS NEEDED **************
First, the good news. Dave Grinham at the tackle box is putting up a rod and reel as a prize. I guess it is up to us what caegory wins it.
Now the bad news. Pegs 26 to end are VERY SLIPPERY because of ALGAE, as a result of our wonderful summer weather. Volunteers needed with stiff bristle brushes to scrape down the algae, Friday evening and Saturday about 12 ish. Whatever happens, these bays are fished AT YOUR OWN RISK. We will wack some sand down during the day saturday, but with the forecast for some rain during the day saturday, it is possible that htese bays will be slippery still. So, anyone local to the area, PLEASE COME AND HELP.

I put the crab / prawn trap out this morning with some very manky mackie in it, after I put the boat in the water. Checked it 30 minutes later and there were a dozen small crabs in it. I will pick it up on the way to Brighton on saturday, hopefully it will be full:). At least I should catch some wrasse if nothing else. I thought hardbacks were good for smoothies too, the fish not the drinks?
I have replaced the original first post of this thread with all the relvant details of the meet/match. Includes links on how to get to the Marina and how to find The Tackle Box.

Yep - wrasse and smoothies are quite happy to grab hardbacks, though peelers will still tend to outfish them. Can't hurt ot bring 'em anyway.

personally rob i wouldnt feed it wild caught hoppers as you do know if they have come in contact with pesticides or what they have eaten as chameleons are easily poisoned by what ever the hoppers have eaten.if you want to feed it hoppers then best is to get them from your local petshop.you could also feed it on occasion a couple of waxworms from the petshop as a treat as they have a high fat content.
Just got in and the white rag have died in the fridge. 2 hours digging for 30 nodd white rag and they are all dead. I have also salvaged the maddies by taking them out of the fridge and put them into the fridge.
I think it will be digging lug tomorrow am and white rag and maddies tomorrow pm

Shame. Never used whites on the marina. Would have been interesting to see what came up on them.
might dig some tomorrow although they are hard to find these days.
In years gone by when we caught lots of pollack on Worthing Pier we mostly used reds for them but they would go absolutely nuts for whites when we used them, which was rarely. If you can get some Jassyfa they'll defo be worth a go down the wall, though you might have to cope with heartbreak of seeing whites disappearing into the gob of a blenny!
Good luck to the southeast team and hope that you all catch plenty of fish and also the south coast team to catch plenty of fish but not as many as the southeast.:uhuh:

Well, my bait gathering plans got blown out of the water as I walked out of the door in London to find my car missing. Having already experienced that the biggest source of car theft in London is the private companies that operate the penalising, I knew that my car was being held for ransom. £300 later, and a couple of hours of messing about, I got it back from the real mafiosa in London. Far more profitable than drug dealing or gun running I am sure. So, thats me with a client tonight, and then out at first light to remedy the situation. Have I got an "easy target" homing DVice (sorry, couldnt resist...:)) attached to my car or what.???

Well the day has arrived, and already there is a problem in the south east camp, as Ash mobile isnt working, Is he still fishing? has he been called in to work? has he topped himself? or did he go to the pictures last night to watch himself (shrek 3)? Perhaps we should have a pole, but who cares? I don't as I have bheen up most of the night with toothache. And with the amount of painkillers ihave taken the last couple of days im constipated up to the hilt. At least im like most of you lot now, that is full of ****.
Good luck to all on the SE team - look forward to meeting you later. Hope you feel a bit better as the day wers on jassyfa - probably all that bait collecting! Latest forecast is for light winds and pretty clear skies up until about midnight, when, surprise surprise, light rain should arrive to be followed by a complete monsoon in the early hours.

****************** VENUE UPDATE *********************
WINDS are brisk. There will be ssome slap over thee low tide if it doesnt die off, so bring waterproofs.
ALGAE isnt too bad, but we will have a brush to deal with any dodgy bits.
PEGS are signed, but not as I would have liked, because the wind is too brisk to risk an unattended A-Board
TACKLE BOX has plenty of pare Rag, Lug and all frozen stuff, including 1lb boxees of squid. They will be open until 7pm for any latecomers.
SMOOTHOUNDS have been caught this morning. Not a lot else though, but fishing into dark will make a big diffrence. Mackerel are around on the west, so maybe just on dark we will get some fresh stuff.
All in all, looks like we will be on the Marina for this comp. Fingets crossed the wind doesnt increase.
Whopper is now picking me up a box of squid and we will be there around 5- 5.30. See you all later.
Thanks for update, Rob. Forecast is for winds to decrease rather than strengthen so fingers crossed we'll be fine.
Well, we proabably could not have had worse weather for the meet. A brisk south westerly was causing plumes of water to go sometimes 30 ft in the air over us. It was like being in Iceland standing next to a geyser.
See this video clip, it is not great quality as it was taken on my phone but will give an idea of what it was like.

What with the water , the constant weed problem and then the rain Whopper and I called it a day at around 9pm and set off for home. At that time Crazyplums had caught a Sole, Jassyfa had a 5lb hound and I believe there were a couple of others caught. No doubt we will get the results in the morning but I think Team SE were winning at the time we left.

Given the weather, you probably were better off staying where you were.
Im wet, emotional :) but glad im home! Oh and Terry even after your nice coffee and a pro-plus it happened again. Crossed one lane before i knew what was happening. I had to park up in the services and get a 10 minute nap...not good.

I can't think why?:giveup::giveup::giveup:
First of all, all the memebers of team south east are now members of team extreme south east.
Secondly I remember who won the rod it was me, I also won the comp with 306 points which was for a 4lb 83cm smut.
The comp actually finished early due to the poor conditions although some of the team south decided to stay. Bit worried on the way home as the coastguards were out in their boat and helicopter.

Good to meet everyone, as there were many faces I had not met before. I did recognise Ashley immediately though for some reason.......
Unfortunately my contribution to the South East total was an eel which didnt count, so therefore didly squat.
Bring on the return match, where I will swap to the South team, and the opportunity to kick SE a*se on its home territory (and Ashes a*se is plenty big enough to kick, for some reason it was a regular sight on the wall.....??)
Also, please do not write off the marina as a venue despite the fairly poor results. If we had got the settled weather that July used to bring, there would have been much more variety in the catches, and much more fish to the scales (well, tape measure......)
Team south east often out numbered never outgunned.

Well done Jass - good result.
All I had for my efforts was around 50lbs odd of weed. I ended early as it was impossible where I was - weed clogging bait and lead seconds after touching down.
Anyway, it was great to put some faces to names and I'm looking forward to the return match as I haven't fished up that way before - and I hope your bloody weather is better than ours.
As Rob said, don't write off the marina, it can be a brilliant place to fish in the right conditions.
Where were you fishing....?? Mauritus?
Puddle bashing at a local water Rob.
Morning all, time for me to report the results for what was a pretty miserable night.
Despite the weather forecast for decreasing winds and relatively calm seas, conditions on the East Arm were horrible throughout, especially in the higher pegs which is where the match was held. Right from the start, huge plumes of water were slapping into the Vs and generally soaking the intrepid band of 36 anglers. We hoped that as the tide rose this would decrease and although we had an hour or so when we had marginally less sea water landing on top of us the wind failed to drop as expected and the volumes of sea water coming up through the Vs was soon causing some concern. Then there were the monsoon like conditions that arrived at about 9pm.
Eventually, around 10pm we took the decision to abandon the match because conditions were continuing to deteriorate. With rain water coming down in huge volumes from the sky and with sea water coming up from the Vs in ever greater volumes we felt that there was the real possibility of an accident in the slippery conditions. Up in the higher pegs from the 40s upwards it was particularly grim and more than a few had already given up the ghost by the time called a halt.
We had a soggy “weigh-in” by the café and the results were as follows.
Team Results:
The South team had 26 anglers who amassed the paltry total of 137 points to give an average score per angler of 5.3. The South East team had 10 anglers who scored a total of 638 points giving an average score per angler of an impressive 63.8. So a resounding victory for the South East team and bragging rights are theirs – at least until the return match!
Individual and Pool Results:
The rules allowed for a max of one pool win per angler as we wanted to spread the dosh around. Total pool money was £130 to be split 40/20/20/20.
Most individual points – Jassyfa from the SE team, with 306 points for a hound of 84cm, won £50 and as he had the fish scoring the highest number of points also won the fishing rod kindly donated by Dave Grinham of The Tackle Box.
Best Round fish - Northern Steve from the SE Team with 292 points for a hound of 83cm won £25.
Best Flatfish – Weehaggisuk from the South Team had 100 points for a superb sole of 43cm and won £25
Most sizeable fish – nobody had more than one and the three anglers who had won the other pools agreed that the balance of £30 should go to the RNLI. I will send the money off this week.
Most unusual fish – Mjiamnot from the SE team won 5 DVices with a monster 3 bearded rockling of 38cm for 40 points.
Most species – this was not won and the prize of a tripod kindly donated by the Happy Shopkeeper (Mike Perfect of Prime Angling) will now be saved for the next SAS match.
Big thanks to everyone who turned up, especially to those from both teams who travelled long distances. I am only sorry that the weather completely ruined what should have been a fab summer’s evening bagging up on all sorts of species. Instead we had a wet, miserable slog with only 6 sizeable fish recorded. Well done to the South East Team who not only beat the South Team fair and square but also pretty much scooped the individual prizes. Hard luck story of the night is probably Mr Beachams, who lost a decent hound at the net. And a special mention should be made of Ashley who fished the match without waterproofs – not sure whether this makes him an iron man or a complete lunatic. A bit of both I reckon! It was great to meet all of you from the SE Team. Despite everything, we managed a few laughs and I look forward to the next time. My final impression of you guys is the awful sight of some of you stripping off to drive home in pants!
Thanks to Fishyrob for organising the booking of pegs on the East Arm. My own thanks to the Happy Shopkeeper who kindly gave me the benefit of his countless years of match experience when I was struggling to get the draw organised. Thanks also to BloatedCod who wisely knew I would have forgotten a few things and came to the rescue. I ended up organising the match side of things by default and it was much harder work than I expected! Not sure I’d fancy doing it again.
My penance for leading the South team to defeat? I’ll leave the South team members to decide that….

First of all, all the memebers of team south east are now members of team extreme south east.
.
ahem ? team extreme ? oh no you don't, there's only one true Team Extreme on here !! it takes a whole lot more than one slightly wet night too, we fished several meets on the trot, and some a whole lot worse than sat night dampening before team extreme was born, try force 7-8, freezing feb, waves like last night, and flounders taking off like kites when pulled from the water!!!! , we worked hard to earn our club name !
to even be a member you have to fish 2 out of 3 consecutive meets, with two or more founder members in attendance, and in poo weather, no turning round cos the weather looks bad, no going home cos of cold fingers, etc !!!
Team south east will suffice !!!
anyways, Well done Jass and the other winners, and well done team SE, seems the numbers game paid off well for you, and ya'll thought the average score system would work against you !! i was a bit gutted the match was halted though, i'd just defrosted a box of squid and half a dozen crabs too !

You can have your team extreme and we will have our team extreme south east. If you want to put up with crappy fishing conditions to meet your criteria then thats fine. Our criteria is even harder and worst. First you have to fish in crap conditions, 2nd you have to witness Ash getting changed into dry clothes, which meant he was in the marina carpark naked. Not a pretty site I can tell you (im now having therapy)

ah, but a team extreme member woulda been prepared to put up with the hardship of wet weather, and naked people (though some aftercare may be requireed, as you say) !!!
seriously though, we're discussin 'team extreme' becoming a proper subs club, organising big meets, boat trips, and other events, so am keen to avoid any confusion with team extreme names being used by others !
ps, there was something on the local news about several traumatised girls from brighton, they'd supposedly seen some kind of naked manlike creature, apparently nearly 9ft tall, like a yeti, but more hairy, according to one hysterical girl,
nowt to do with you lot was it ?
Thats Ash doing his strip in the car park. I was suprised that he done it with a coachload of Japenese tourists and another coachload of schoolkids all watching.
