I was told recently that the mackerel are coming in real close and it's possible to flycast to them at Dungie. Going to try it tomorrow morning (18th Sept). Look out for the two blokes with fly tackle and light rod and lines too. :D
If they are further out we'll use rod and line.
hi , dungie has very cloudy water at the mo , mackerel will be hard to catch there i would try hythe before they go for good this year

Never fished hythe. Best place? I have done cloudy water before and not had too much probs. But we are quite willing to move if it's that bad. Is hythe producing close in? We don't have a boat. I am hoping to take them on flycasting if I can. Not done it before you see.
hythe is a steep shingle beach like dungie but its better protected from the wind so the water stays clean as it floods, wind should be almost behind you tomorrow ,so you should be alright using a fly good luck,,,,, tony b
as for close in they somtimes are half way up the beach :)

Your help is very much appreciated Tony B. I'll let you know how we do. I have not fished saltwater fly in Britain before. Looking forward to it.
Hythe it is! :)
fish right at the end near the pertrol garage with your fly on the left of the groyne and you might catch a big bass too , should be plenty of mackies on the right tho they have to stop there and turn,

Thanks for the welcome. Dungie was slow on Saturday. arrived high water, stayed for 6 hours and only caught 1 dog fish. mackerel have gone. spoke to a group of nighters down the beach. they only managed 1 bass all night - packed up early and went home. was heavy on rig as well this weekend - quite a bit of kelp around. have to give it a go when it gets bit cooler out there...

Same at Hythe. Got there a few hours before high tide and stayed well past. No sign of anything. A chap a few hundred yards down the beach took a small flattie but that's all I saw come out.
Spoke to a regular there who said the mackerel were much fewer this season and he'd only had one small bass all summer. Tried flies and lures.

how's the action around the rest of the east kent coast at the moment? my 1 dogfish took to squid. had no luck with lug.
Will do. I am new here and I dunno if I can post pics. If I can, i will. Cheers mate! Gotta go for now.
Did you have any joy? What flies did you use? I am also new to saltwater fly-fishing, and plan on going down to Dungeness this Saturday morning 24 Sept. Any help will be great.
cheers

Unfortunately, I think we are too late in the season. I use bucktails mainly with a big painted eye in a lacquered head. I tie them myself with mylar and reflective cheeks..
Keep your casting practice in(I fish for pike, perch and trout the same way) and await the next summer. I don't think I'll be here- moving to Texas in the new year so the saltwater fish on the tex coast will be my target.
I was told earlier on this thread that the water at Dungie was too cloudy now. Hythe was nice and clear but no fish. :(
