View Full Version : whitby,gear
a few of the lads are asking what gear to use,
i use a penn wave blaster perker & 345gti reel
loaded with 60lb whiplash braid,i find that a good
combination for whitby...........
a few times ive used one of my uptide rods with a penn
850 multi and 40lb whiplash, that combo coped with ease.
its great sport using an up tider,a 6lb cod 200ft down
puts one hell of a bend on an uptider..........
rigs..........perks are a must,as are pink hokkies..
if shads are working when where there, then a
4ft flowing trace is the best way to fish them...
blue, white is what ive had the best results on. .
the tackle shop in whitby opens at 6.00 so you can get
all the gear there, and its alot cheaper to than over hear.
the cost of the boat is £40 each, expessive i know
but the fishings well worth it.
there is a cafe next door to the tackle shop to
which also opens at 6.00...........
cheers paul............................

that sounds good to me, is it all drift fishing or do you ever anchor the wrecks ?
that sounds good to me, is it all drift fishing or do you ever anchor the wrecks ?
hi steve,
no mate its all drift fishing, rough ground and wrecks.....
if it stays like it as been for the last 8 weeks, you wont need
any bait..........
if you do fancy a bit of bait fishing, then mackerel are in
plague proportions.theres loads of ling out there which
will take mackerel all day long, and plenty of big ones to.
should be a good days fishin with plenty of banter....

looks like i will have to invest in some new gear, by the sounds of it me uptider might take some stick
I'm gonna cut down an old beachcaster (take 6 inch off the tip, 18 inches off the butt and stick a roller tip in) for pirking.
Probably use my trusty Abu 7500 with 40lb braid, although I will buy something with a bit more grunt if finances allow!
Sounds like it's gonna be class!!!

Hi Bob, the skipper should have spare rods on board, save you cutting down a longer rod, i can't go:schmoll::schmoll: but my partners in crime are going, [tony c & tonythescaff]. I have a spare uptider if you would like to use that i will send it with tony. Abu 7500 is ok for the job, especially if it has got the level wind still on.

Hi the guy in the tackle shop sells pirks and they are cheaper than fleece bay. the shads already come hooked up, if you are fishing a mackerel or squid bait for a ling at slack water, flowing trace, [80lb+ line] as a ling can bite through your line by the time you pull it up 200ft, and 6/0 hooks.

you are going to need more than good tackle to catch anything how many cheque book and pens do you have at home?

That's really generous of you! Thankyou! I was reading through the main WSF pages and it said that a lot of guys who do pirking regularly modify beachcasters like this. I've got a Penn INXS lying around the house and am definitely looking forward to chopping the damn thing to little tiny pieces!!!!
Just incase I botch things (!) I'd love to take you up on the offer mate, cheers!

when you get to whitby dont use the tackle shop next to the car park, if you go to the other side of the bridge and turn right (heading towards the pier) and then your next left and follow the road around there is another tackle shop next to the cafe called Whitby Angling Supplies. tis much cheaper.
cans of stella for me m8,and maybe what paul catches i will use as bait:yeah:

Floatation suit and braid arrived from Gerry's this morning!!!

gunna bring a 60 - 100 maxximus with 50lb braid and a 20 penn with 20lb braid, they be ok ?
will see if can book in the same b an b at weekend to :)
have a good night of it on the sat then !
only a week to go now lads..
i see from the forum most lads going up to whitby next week are unsure
what tackle to use, ive fished whitby over 70 times and dont see the point
in using really heavy gear. A 20/30lb class rod and reel loaded with 60lb
braid will cope with most things the north sea has to throw at it. ive started using an uptide rod more and more, and that copes with ease.
make sure you have plenty of backing line on your reels as most fishing
is in 200ft+ of water.
for cod fishing pirks, hokkies, and shads are a must, fish shads on a flowing trace. (the last time i was up there pink hokkies fished really well, but that changes from day to day).
for ling fishing a flowing trace is the best rig to use, as for bait i wouldnt buy any, theres millions of mackeral out there.
ling have a mouth full of really sharp teeth, so 70/80lb mono is best.
20/30lb rod and reel
floatation or wet suit
pirks
hokkies
shads
60lb braid
70/80lb mono
zip sliders
1lb weights
6.0 hooks
i have a box full of gear for fishing whitby,so if anyone forgets something
i will sell them at a small cost, and donate the money to the next fish and
eat for donnas dream house...................
please note this is only my advice, and according to my missus im always wrong!!!!!!!!
see you all next week

hi,
if we meet in the car park at 6.00 we can nip for a coffee then onto the
tackle shop,if where on the boat for 6.45 that gives us 15mins to get
are gear sorted before we steam out at 7.00..
arriving back in whitby 4.30/5.00.....

:boat:an uptider is fine, use mine all the time. its more fun than reeling them up with a broom handle and you feel the bites better esp with braid on :)we are not going to catch :uhuh:40lb cod so fishing lighter you will have better sport:clap3: paul is a cracking skipper and no dout will put us on a few fish he did the last time just hope the weather is ok and we get out see you all sunday caint w8t................tony c

Got my INXS cut down to about 10ft with the new reel seat and duplon grips fitted down the butt (I think it feels better there, and the weight of the reel will counterbalance the weight of the pirk too!) Old 7500c3 (original made in Sweden version) loaded with 65lb braid, half a dozen 500g lures fitted with assist hooks instead of trebles, gonna buy old style pirks in Whitby, floatation suit is toasty warm, got hokkais, new filleting knife and board, 80lb Stren and strong 6/0 hooks for the ling. The reel down will be VERY hard work if you are planning on using 500g pirks!!!
That's a HUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEE Pirk, particularly on a beachcaster!
You have to be bonkers trying to use that.
If you went to 20lb braid or less you'd be using 10oz of lead or less and then it would be easily manageable on the beachcaster (I use 6lb class and it handles 10oz in 200foot plus).
The rod you are using should be relatively sporting, but get the reel seat mounted normally. The rest of your gear sounds like it is from the dark ages.
I never was a full shilling!:bangin::crazy::ahhh::bounce:
I meant to type pirks upto 500g, I agree they are a tad aggricultural though.
As I've explained in previous posts Tom, it's the end of the month and I'm on a budget. I can't justify paying out for a new rod and reel for potentially just one trip (although I would like to do more)
I'll see how this trip goes, learn from it and buy new lighter gear to suit once I've gained the experience.
Cheers Tony, I've got a pack of black Eddystone Eels and some natural looking Storm Shads left over from my last rockhopping trip. I'll have a look at getting some jellyworms in too
