Ok, with just about a month remaining before our first (hopefully of many) trip to dover breakwater, things are beginning to move on a little now.
the main object of this post, over time, is to explain the meeting time / place, simple comp rules, who's coming, etc,
As i mentioned before, with everyone paying £15, this will leave a prize fund of £100.
so,
the comp
1) a max of 6 hooks is permitted. this means if you have 6 feathers on a trace, your other rods need to be outta the water!
2) a max of 3 rods are permitted (big wall !)
3) it will either be measure and release - samf points system, or weigh and release (if i can get enough scales for the length)
4) in the even of a tie-break for a prize, we'll think something up ! (unless you wanna fight over it, or split it)
5) prob a walk off.
6) mackeral /scad do not count, (though maybe we can debate if they're caught on single lures such as a dexter / jelly worm ?)
more ?
prizes
£15 heaviest bag (theoretical bag)
£10 biggest round
£10 biggest flat
those are the usual for any comp, to make this more interesting, and open to all, match fishermen and recreational alike, the following are also being given out,
prizes for catching a fish of a certain species, that weighs closest to a 'sealed' pre-determined weight, this could be anything from 8oz, to 5lb, and it's 100% pot luck !
so,
bass £10,
dogfish £10
pout £10
whiting £10
flattie £10
that leaves £15, this £15 will be in place of a 'wooden spoon' award. this can be given for a number of reasons, it could be the biggest cock up or catastrophe, the most 'unlucky angler' for a spectacular blank, or an event that just made us laugh our nuts off, Smoothy, Chris, Mark_S and myself will choose the winner who will essentially have a free trip !
other prizes
i am also trying to sort out some prizes for this, now we aren't doing this for charity, so i don't expect to get loads of tackle or anything of the like. but i do have a few ideas for small prizes. im personally supplying about 15 'team extreme' stainless travel mugs, some tip tape, etc.
i might get a few t-shirts done, not sure how many yet, they'll be about £8.50 each if interested.
sponsors ?
If anyone wants to sponsor some prizes, ie supply a prize, you can name what the prize is for, remember this is all for a laugh though.
anyways, here's the 'coming list', which will be edited as time goes on.

When the book opens.........Heap your 'hard earned' on me for the 'cock-up' prize. I've been practicing hard for that one recently!! :whistling
This is shaping up to be a stonking meet Hugh, fair play to you guys for the organisation.......top ideas for the prizes too, gives everyone a chance of walking away with something. :clap3:
Can't wait.
Andy.
Fished the breakwater today (see south east site) some cracking sport, sorry that I look like a scarecrow
Good news, Have managed to get my boss to sign holiday request by flourishing it under his nose at 6am when half asleep :D what a relief!
Rats - keep forgetting to send the money. Will do so ASAP Hugh!
Superb organisation, Hugh - its gonna be a goodie. Hope I don't draw a low number for the walk off - I have never fished the breakwater before so won't have the foggiest where to fish! And very glad I'm one of the judges for the wooden spoon because if there is a spectacular blank to be had I'm the man just now...
Losing the Hound on Shoreham arm last night would have seen the wooden spoon coming my way!!

lol Mark ! it's hard to blank on there, although someone said the other day that ebb tides aren't great, high is about 10pm, then low at 4am ish, so we'll fish up too,
re prizes, if anyone wants to put up a prize, and come up with the reason you can win it, the feel free to pm me !
GEAR you'll need....
this is just my own personal experience,
big leads, the minimum you'll need is a 6oz, and that's for a 3oz bass rod hanging over the side ! anything less will be waterskiing on the top in no time !
outside.... for any kind of cast away from the wall, i normally use 8 or 9oz gemini style grippers, ie a long cylindrical lead with a screw on cap at the bottom, any rig you like ! pulleys, sliding ledgers, clipdowns, flappers, etc !
inside, 7oz gripper, bend the wires out to 90 degrees, smaller hooks on flappers,
(FishyRob... a few 8-9oz d-vices might be handy, extreme testing !)
Long leaders.... at low tide you don't want to be handlining a fish up with a knot between it and you !
make sure you have spare stuff if you have it, you won't be able to get back to the car if you need it !
Losing the Hound on Shoreham arm last night would have seen the wooden spoon coming my way!!
Been trying for smoothies all week and while all and sundry have been hauling them in willy nilly I have managed to lose five. Straightened hooks, snapped snoods you name it. Last night in the Worthing match latched onto what was definitely the biggest smoothie I've ever hooked and after 5 minutes of scrapping lost it in the surf - it gave me a slack line bite so I got loads of weed on the line and the leader knot jammed in my tip ring. As I backed up the beach trying to drag it out a wave rolled the fish up faster than I was walking backwards, line slackened and fish got off. Used several profane words! Not that it would have made much difference to the outcome of the match as the winner had over 62lb!

Dump the rod and handline it in Mark. Worked for me the other night and at least you keep in touch with the fish in the waves and backwash.

Tie some propper rigs, 30lb snoods, 80lb rig body, big gun hooks, and bully the buggers! You'll soon have plenty on the beach! :)
I kept losing hounds on the pier on monday on 4/0 Kamasan, switched to my 5/0 o'shaunasseys, lol! Landed no problem after that.
Off to Brighton marina now to see what I can do tonight! No crabs though!

In my experience we will not be needing 7oz on the inside, 5oz will be fine. For the outside 7oz will be adequate. Down the wall 5oz ok. The tide is quite small. Anywhere from peg 100ish to 213 (where the boat docks) the tide will ease to very little after HW. The knuckle (1-13) will need the heaviest of leads and is snaggy. Tide run on the inside is a lot less than on the outside along the length of the wall.

admittedly, it's not the bighest tide, at 5.8m, the last i fished it was 6.4, and most people struggled to hold bottom, even on the inside, if people use proper leads with decent grip wires or impacts with the wires bent out, then they stand a chance, otherwise it's very difficult, i struggled with 8oz at distance, even with the wires bent out properly,
on my bass rod, a 5oz was not enough to hold the weight down, a whole macky would simply be swept along until it was almost on the surface, a 6oz kept it at depth, but not gripped unless you uptide, difficult if people fish too close together.
if people can get away with less, then great, but i think it fair to forewarn !
ps, i fished midway last trip, the tide was, the tide was pulling the whole time, going slack only for a short time while it changed direction, then again just after high, and before switching again, when it pulled hard again !

So my standard one up one downs, 12lb snoods and size 2 nordic bends are a bit too flimsy then?
Gonna have one more go for a couple of hours tonight, a little bit west of where I was pegged last night. Not been crabbing today so knowing my luck the groynes will be empty and the hounds will have moved off somewhere else!

Hey Rob - if I win it I'll take those 5 Dvices but let you off the 5 you still owe me from the fishathon:):):) Actually, I still have the 5 you already gave me plus one I found stuck on a groyne whilst hunting spiders last week.:)

glad the cheque arrived safe and sound, sorry for the delay in getting it to you but i hardly ever send cheques these days and had to search the flat for my cheque book!
fingers crossed for the weather as this year has n't been the most forgiving for trips to the breakwater!
i've generally found with dover tides over 6.0m are a hell of a lot harder than those under that height and this will probably effect the amount of lead necessary for the trip but i usually take a bucket full of lead from 5oz upto 10oz and pray that i never need to use the really heavy stuff!
Hope we can get away fairly light - the thought of slinging 10oz of lead about does not sound like fun to me.

Any confirmation of back up venue? Personally, I would not like to dig a shed load of bait just to fish some naff beach somewhere if it slows. Admiralty could be a possibility. Also, we will have to sort out beach rigs / gear rather than Breakwater gear.

hey dude.
back up, we can fish a number of locations which are within half an hour of dover, deal has several options, as does dover itself, i've not fixed a back up as it will depend on the weather (wind direction) where we might want to go.
you can choose it if you like !
i always have beach rigs with me anyways, in fact, most can be used from the breakwater too, i don't make anything special for the wall.
might have some harbour rag off you if you're digging them !

right, two issues today....
Payment....
come on people, lets gets some more cheques in, i currently only have around a third of the dosh needed.
this might seem a little harsh, but payment is to be in by the end of the month, this is to ensure all cheques are cleared before we go.
unpaid ???
i have about 9 of my local club members begging to go, and will not worry about using them to fill the unpaid spaces if it looks like a space or 9 is going beggin. so please, lets get the dosh in. 30 is a nice number and gives us a nice pot for prizes,
what i do not want this to turn into, is another "yeah i'm coming, i'll pay on the day", and then find only 6 of us turn up due to a spot of rain, this is a Team Extreme meet after all. so.. monies due asap please.
Alternative venue.
in the case of an alternative venue being required... due to the breakwater being closed, we have a couple of choices,
not far away is Deal, some good fishing can be had on occasion, from 10th green, chequers, or the pier itself (hopefully less snaggy now). it may well pay to bring beach gear too (tripods and buddies etc) in case we go to a beach.
if anyone has any other suggestions for a back-up, then they'll all be considered.
in the event that the breakwater is closed, I'll know around lunchtime for sure, then those who choose not to come as a result, can have their money back,
i would still like to run the pools for those who to come, each member will receive the £10 back if they go in the pools, leaving a fiver in each.
anthing else ?/?

just phoned Alan on the breakwater today, everything is in order still, and the boat is booked for 8pm, there'll be two or three trips, depending on how many peole and gear fit on each run, technically i think only 10 peeps and gear is about right !
i think that fishing a night will involve more gear than the day trippers take,
so, don't be late !
few more cheques / payments are due that i've not heard about, anyone ?

hey all, please can everyone who's on the list to go, send me the money by the 3rd august at the latest, i don't want to keep banging on about this, but i need to ensure all cheques are cleared in time for the day before we go.
i think a couple were gonna pay me at brighton, but what with the weather i didn't see you, sorry. please can you forward it to me.
if you are on the list, but DO NOT want to go, then please have the courtesy to let me know, i have between 6-8 people will jump at the chance.
please remember, this trip is limited to 30 people, i want it to be full, so will offer the places, assuming no money = no wish to go !!!!!!
like i've said, i don't wanna come across as being a whinging money grabber, but this trip is a pre cursor for more, if this goes well, we'll think on more trips, with either more or less people invited, and to other locations around the south east / south. lets not see apathy get in the way !!!

the comp
1) a max of 6 hooks is permitted. this means if you have 6 feathers on a trace, your other rods need to be outta the water!

5) prob a walk off.

Badger (tronix terminal tackle) has thrown in 50 beach rigs, to the captor of the biggest released fish.
Fishyrob is giving 5 D-vices to the same fish too i believe,
Anglers Den in Pevensey has said they'll see if they can find something for us too,
if you're friendly with your local shop, maybe you can see if they want to donate something to the prize fund, along with the reason for winning it (the more fun / obscure, the better !)
sponsors ?
If anyone wants to sponsor some prizes, ie supply a prize, you can name what the prize is for, remember this is all for a laugh though.

I will keep the news that has got me so chuffed, until last; but as it currently looks like the weather is going to do us a favour (ssssshhh!!), it's time to start really looking forward to the trip and making plans.
So, a quick question......I take it there are a set of rules for fishing the breakwater? If so, is anyone able to publish them on here? I am particularly interested as to whether disposable bbq's are allowed.....but it would be handy to see all the rules before we set off.
Boring bit over.......on with the news.
I have just spoken to PETE OF SOLENT TACKLE (SOUTHSEA) WHO HAS OFFERED £50.00 WORTH OF TACKLE VOUCHERS AS PRIZES !! WHAT A STAR!!
He is happy for the trip organisers to decide how to split the £50.00 and what to award the prizes for. He is a very nice man that Pete!! :clap3:

So, a quick question......I take it there are a set of rules for fishing the breakwater? If so, is anyone able to publish them on here? I am particularly interested as to whether disposable bbq's are allowed.....but it would be handy to see all the rules before we set off.
Boring bit over.......on with the news.
I have just spoken to PETE OF SOLENT TACKLE (SOUTHSEA) WHO HAS OFFERED £50.00 WORTH OF TACKLE VOUCHERS AS PRIZES !! WHAT A STAR!!

Excellent news - thats a superb gesture! The comp will definitely be worth winning! Let's see what Hugh reckons on how the vouchers should awarded.

edgey, that'd be brighton pout then !!!
Andy, As Mark just said, it's a fantastic gesture, please thank him for me (and mention my amazing tp tape ;-) !!! ).
we can either come up with some whacky ideas, or he can, if you want to call him, he can split it either in two, or in 5, up to him, or we'll decide !
if anyone has any suggestions for reasons for winning anything, then please let me know, we could do with some whacky idea's,
as for barbeques, the way i understand it, is that no fires are allowed (due to the rather large shipping at night (seems odd when we have headlights !), and the yachties getting smoked during the day, though i imagine that if you can think of a way to surround it (beach buddy maybe ?) then it's poss, so long as the rubbish is all taken away afterwards.
mmmm, bbq macky for brekkie !
