The trip will be 8am till 5pm. Whats everones idea on travelling down? Would you wanna go down the night before and stay in a b+b or meet up in magor services at 5am and drive down then?

It would work out expensive for me to B&B I think we should drve down in the morning doing a car share system. I don't mind using my motor for the lads from carmarthenshire and maybe if they are insured for other cars , even if it's only third party,I don't mind someone else driving it? Lets see how that could work out?
Well..You,me,Ken and Paid4 can work somthing out im sure..
As long as you dont feed Ken any Pears!!...

I would prefer to drive down in the morning myself. If we meet in the services we can sort out whos going with who and who can take a bit extra tackle in there car etc:)

kev it costs quite abit these days to leave a car for more than 2 hrs in a sevice area car park. As marcus said us lads down this end can sort something out and then meet up with you further down the mway and then drive in convoy incase somebody has a breakdown or something.

Yes we need to sort something out for the 6 down here coz i dont think fishyfingers drives either so he will need picking up or dropping off aswell. When i get in touch with him we can work something out.
you know what..would it be cheaper in the long run to hire a minibus??..
Say if you all drove to mine..which is halfway point between everyone??and ill get it to pick us up from here
i could ring up my old boss(runs a bus hire company),,and see if i can get a deal??
if we hired a Self drive bus from wick van hire..it will be £102 for the day..add the diesel..which i imagine cant be much over £100..its around £20 each!..
Its a 17 seater too,,so we got plenty of room for Eye spy and hide and seek!..
welshkev
25-07-2007, 15:10
Would we be able to pick it up that early though, if not would it be a 2 day charge because it would have to be picked up on the sunday and dropped off on the tuesday,or late monday night? If we could have it for £102 that would be good coz it would probably be £15 quid each petrol there and back. See what you can do mate i think that would be the best option though.
ive already thought of this..I rang the company and explained the details..
£102 is a 2 day charge..I will be picking up the van the night before we leave, and then dropping it back in the night, then dropping the keys in the morning after ..
Hi marcus, might need a roof rack with all the tackle we are taking mate, rods, boxes, etc!
its a 17seater dude...only 10 of us going,,theres plenty of room
Lets see wot the others think then matey, tight lines
theres plenty of time to think about it,,It was just an idea..
But its all set up if we decide to go down that road

would we be able to have a couple of named drivers?
welshkev
01-08-2007, 23:22
I was thinking earlier today:g::g:(Not very often i do this mind!!!) We would be better off going down in cars, because as most will know, the boats down the south coast you gotta ring up the night before to see if its still on. If we've got a settled period then theres no problem, but if the weather tarts dont know whats happening and we order the minibus and its called off the night before we will lose 20 quid each on the bus:yucky:
So i think the best thing to do is wait till a week before and see what the weather is supposed to be like:unsure:

i dont mind...
Just keep bumping the thread though..You never know
Put it in the main welsh forums as well!...
Also..When you got time..Can you find out off the skipper exactly what fishing we're doing ,tactics etc..so i have half a chance of catching somthing!..

I am willing to drive and could take Paid4 and Ken.davison4 if that is any good? Sorry Marcus should be able to get you in as well providing we are all sensible about the amount of kit we take.
i think the plan is we're(Ken you and me piling in P4's car...thats the plan...Comfort and speed and Sat Nav..
we're only taking one boat rod each(depending on tactics) and im taking my old crappy bag witha bit of tackle and scoff..thats it..
but obviously the boss will know..

It would be easier if we had 3 in each car, otherwise one car is just gonna have 2 in and will cost more petrol wise:unsure:
yeah...But got to remember Paid4 is already coming from about 40miles further out again..plus he's got a bloody big V8...with 4 of us in,,its gonna work out about £25-£30 each..
Hense the idea to hire a self- Drive Bus for the day...£107 for the day!!plus fuel costs(say £100) £20 odd quid each..no worries about cancelling at short notice..Wicks are good like that
welshkev
13-09-2007, 22:47

Kev as I've said already I don't mind driving if 2 of the lads from the east (so to speak) can get down to the m4 or fairly close to it I will gladly pick them up.
Iv'e just read the all the threads on this one mainly about the mini bus hire and I realise that Marcus has got the hire details in place, had forgotten what his plan was.
again I don't mind picking up john and Ken but where would we meet the minibus and where can I SAFELY leave my car for the day?
if we got the Bus...You Ken and paid4 would come to mine,,and you can leave the car outside my house quite safely!..
Then we'd take the bus and go and pick up the rest at a designated spot i.e (Kevs house or similar)..
And then off to Weymouth..singing the wheels on the bus and a spot of Eye Spy!...
Sweet as!

The VooDoo Bus Man

He can't sing. drive and play Ispy all at the same time as well as dodging flying scotch eggs so don't worry Kev. It seems like the mini bus idea is a goer then marcus. You had better let us know what time to meet at your house and where it is?
Paid4 knows whew i live,,,times depend on what time we're sailing..bearing in mind we are off to Cardiff/Newport etc to pick up the others on the way..its around 160miles from here, majority of the way is NOT on motorways..so would take a good 3-4hours.
So we'll need to work it out..

Should take about 3 hours from your place. Get off the m5 at j25 then when you get past yeovil its near enough one road into weymouth. We will be sailing at 8am so it will be an early start!!!
so leave mine at 3.30am to allow for traffic and picking up and assorted mishaps..
if we arrive early,,we can stop for brekkie somewhere..
Um - who do you suppose is going to drive this thing:g:
welshkev
19-09-2007, 14:58
Another thing??? Don't they need to see he drivers licensce before letting you have the van:g: I dont mind being a named driver and driving there or back(from newport) but i dont really wanna be driving upto porthcawl just to leave my licensce.
Unless:idea:
I come up the night before to pick it up with marcus, drive it down here, then in the morning you can drive down here and we can go from there:blink:
I will ring and enquire..Im sure they can pull a few strings for me..they are very helpful at Wicks..
Marcus
Right...
The price for hire is £103 to pick the Bus up the night before, and drop it back the following morning after the trip!..Its a 17 seater so plenty of room is available
Named drivers.
You can have as many named drivers as you want,as long as you fill in the insurance details when hiring..
I will need to book the bus soon,as apparently its very busy..i will need someones Creditcard (i dont have one)..they take £100 deposit on the day,and then put it back into your account when the bus is returned..
Questions??
Um - who do you suppose is going to drive this thing:g:

According to the AA it's 177 miles to Weymouth via Porthcawl from Llanelli. Will take 3 1/2 hours, it ain't going to take that long;) will cost c£80 in petrol - £20 each. 9 in a bus £107 for the bus £100 in fuel - longer time - gives £23 each and still got to pay for petrol to get to Porthcawl/Merthyr - I'm struggling to see the cost benefits here:g:

Right then. Lets put it to the vote.
Although i think it would probably be better to go by car, that way we can all meet the people we are going down with quickly and just meet down there. Or meet somewhere and drive down in convey??
Des might be able to come now as hes gone self employed so can have the odd day off:unsure: And if not the other 5 of us down here all live within a 15 mile radius so it wouldnt be too hard to meet up.
Also it would be easier on a payment, coz i wouldnt really be too comfortable with paying a deposit and cancelling the bus 12 hurs before we are supposed to go:unsure:

As i'm about to either be sacked or be allowed to resign from my job? I'm not allowed into the bookies and thats where i knew most of the other guys from fishing:uhuh:
I know the skippers prefer to go out with 8 but i would prefer if we could go with 9 or 10. Obviously that cuts the cost for everyone. If it was to go down to 8 would everyone be o.k? It would mean the cost would go up from 36 to 45 each. But we could hopefully share boxes and be able to go down in 2 cars saving a bit on petrol:unsure:
i dont mind paying a bit more...i just have to nick the missus purse!...no worries!
The VooDoo Bus Man
25-09-2007, 10:45
I don't mind paying a bit extra .But an idea is that you contact the skipper and ask him if he has a list of people who are looking for an individual trip and could fill one space for us. This would be a good option as it means we could still travel in 2 cars from wales. Car 1, I presume would be John(Driving) Roger,Marcus, and a.n.other? Have atry with the skipper KEV and see what happens.
I"m okay with the cost kev,And as i dont drive myself i"ll happily go along with what ever the majority decides, alan.w:)

Re Mon 29th Oct; bass trip. What is your mobile phone number please? Was this trip booked by you? The reason why I ask is that under 29th Oct I have the name 'Paul' written with a phone number of 07921 800349 and I have to admit I haven't got a clue as to who 'Paul' is!
The majority of groups come with 8 as you are on the drift for bass. Even with 8 you get tangles. The more you put on, the more tangles you get. The trip is £360 which works out at £45 per head for a 9 hour day which most people think is pretty cheap. You won't need to buy any bait as the sandeels will be gone (probably) and we will be using artificial lures (storm lures being the best).
I will advertise for another chap if you want but I would recommend against it! 10 is definitely too many for serious bassing!
When i read the first part i thought, lookout hes double booked:yucky: But he rang me up half hour ago and said he was having a blonde moment and everything was fine:blink:Phew!!!
As you can see hes recommended going with 8. £45 each and then kens deposit can go onto the wreck trip in jan if hes able to make it:unsure:
Everyone o.k with that??
yes mate...Is he providing the artificials then??..

£45 is ok with me and £20 for petrol. I have been asking around on the other area forums and the majority seem to suggest that we use Calcutta or storm shads. it was also mentioned that we buy them down there on the day from the local tackle shop and then you only need to to get the ones that are HOT. In this months TSF I have seen an advert for WEYMOUTH Tackle and they open at 7 am. maybe this is the way to go. There are some good offers on this forums shop site as well. Check out some of the ones on Calcuttas website as well

thing is with braid as you know there is no give so you need a rod with a fair bit of give if you dont then a hard hitting bass will be lost.

I know theres a few pubs around the harbour. Dont know if they open early for brekkie though? It's up to you westerners if you wanna meet up in magor services or just meet down by weymouth angling?? I'm fine either way. My guess is if you are going a steady 80-85 get off at j25 m5 and go along the dual carriage and down that way, it shouldnt take any longer than 2 1/2hours. I did penzance to wattsville in just over that last week:blink::blink: But that was pushing it a bit:unsure: Aslong as we got peoples mob numbers who are in the two cars we should be fine and can meet down there:)
Get down there for about 7 o'clock. Then you can have some grub if you can find somewhere open, and still go to the tackle shop for some info and bits and bobs:clap2:
STEVE. Can you get over to my place or will you need picking up?
I'll get over to your place,no worries!
There we are then...Leave mine at 3.30am,and meet ya'll down at weymouth probably best...we'll be sailing past you on the M5 at some point anyways..

Here is a pic of the boat..Looks the biz!
http://www.deepsea.co.uk/boats/offshore_rebel/
Ive Spoken to Peter the Skipper,
He mentions 12-20lb rods(i assume strong uptiders will be ok)
20-30lb braided lines
For the Bassing, will need Boom rigs with clear mono with Storm Lures(the ones that look like mackeral are good or redgills)
I asked about taking Frozen Sandeels..And this is FINE!..Ammo (The bigger ones)sandeels on size 1 Circle hooks! or trebles..
We will need 10oz Ball leads, and probably a good few of them as we're fishing very rough ground!
we are also after Bream as well,,so Squid will be needed along with Paternoster rigs with size 1 aberdeens.
hope this helps a bit!!
the tackle shop opens at 6.30am,,with all stuff available there!...But take your sandeels with you if your using them,,Better safe than sorry!..

this sounds good well dun Marcus ! All we've got to do is pray the weather holds and we all get there!
Does a 10oz ball weight have a swivel attached to it in some way then ?

Thats good for enough for me mate thanks very much. Do you know the reason for ball weights then rather than other shapes?
Yes they don't snag as much they tend to bounce over snags.I'm using a rig tied up for the Portland Race called appropriately "The Portland Rig" I'll bring some along, and we'll see which is best!

Forecast is looking better. I'm undecided on the rod front now Iwas going to bring two uptiders one light the other upto 10ozs so I think I will bring that one and a 6-12 class shortish boat rod. Any body got any suggestions or ideas?
stick to what the skipper suggests i think..
12-20lb class boat rods..
Myself i havent got one,but have a pretty sturdy uptider that will do the job..(it did on Anchorman similar fishing this summer)
I'll bring my 15lb Ugly Stick for him.

Just looked at Metcheck and there giving 9-12 westerlies mainly. So I think we will have to wait until Kev speaks to the skipper this evening. I'm half packed and have sorted out some bream traces. Just going to try out some heavy weights on my rods to see which copes the best

The suspense is killing me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Have we any firm news? Don't bother to bring any scotch eggs as I don't think we will be catching any rockling. And as the skip is English he might not fully understand your strange Welsh traditions. I've lived in Wales since 1985 And I don't fully understand them!!!!!!!!!!!!! so becarefull because you might upset him and be going for an early bath if you catch (PUN) my drift( and another one)LOL
