Have just come back from crabbing. went down the west arm, collected what little rubbish there was on the wall  and emptied the bin.
Your gizmo works a treat Tony -well done that man.
Was great to see the wall had very little rubbish on it and the bin was only about 3/4 full. Should last until Sunday now.

emptied the old green goddess again today and she was heaving and it was only 36 hrs since i last did it, still at least it is being used
also litter picked from the bin north wards had to miss the south end because i had to return to work and could not carry anymore
on a less positive note i witnessed some foreign anglers retaining undersized fish the smallest being a 3inch bass as well as common shore crabs ... and well to be honest anything that moved really, i could not over challenge as i was out numbered and the language barrier deepened to magnanimous proportions, so maybe at next meeting we can discuss a plan of attack on this matter as i am a little unsure of position and i don't like hospital food and i do enough work for Tribes already
I noticed the oversize bag next to the bin near the parking meter so I gave it a swerve today " 3pm ish", I shall have a go on Wenesday as it will probably be full again by then. The EU's etc are doing my swede in regarding keeping undersize fish and crabs:boxing::banghead::banghead:.

Head lights and tilley's are ok as long as they are not on top of the wall or being a nuisance, the last thing we all want is to be searching for Boris who tripped over the bin and fell in the brin in the dark:).

I was talking to a chap from the PA today on the Arm and he told me that two additional bins will be installed in two weeks so that will take the flack off of us a BIT when the so called summer arrives.
Gray, is there any chance of a couple of extra signs for the new bins?, and I shall knock up a couple of them bag holder gadgets.
Steve/ G, will the club funds stretch to us getting a refuse truck?.:)
Mind you I think this time next year we will have some sort of recycling system going as the amount of beer tins and bottles that litter the arm have been paramount recently.:g:

Arm was in bit of a sh*t state and loads of shingle & weed. Apparently they had a manic nights fishing last night with people queueing for the drop net to land Smoothies.
Far end has loads of rubbish on it and really needs a good sweep through, again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have been in communication with the fisheries dept and all i will say is that it was very very positive!! SAS has another friend to talk to
and to those who insist on retaining under sized fish need to tread a little more carefully in the future
enough said?

Can all members who witness any undersize fish taking politely remind the perpetrators that there really is going to be a stepping up of enforcement. Perhaps a few fines will concentrate peoples minds. I'd rather the so called "anglers" knew this IS going to happen and promote prevention!
Nice work on the fish size limits intervention:)...Sorry, but is there any chance that this topic could be crowbarred over to the 2007 thread as I am worried that the clean up and bin emptying input may lose momentum however boring it may be:kissing:.

Monday night
Emptied bin again which was full again last night. I think I must now be on Council payrole.
Fished & chatted with Bally until 1.00am. Not much on fish front, Bally had a red mullett, a few schoolies, sole and odd mullett also caught...
Oh and electric eels ( according to some Rodney on the end )
At least bin is being used so can't complain.
Don't know how we will cope with 3 bins.
Thanks for your company Bally.........................

No worries mate, it was a pleasure. By the way it was a Golden Grey Mulllet I had which came just before sunset, A few were caught during the day Including a nice one which looked over 2 1/2lb's, funny how it grew to between 4 and 5 when the blokes had finished their session?!
I'm still laughing about the electric eels now!!:lmao:what an idiot! Like I said, I hope he used insulated pliers to unhook it! I'll probably go back down at the end of the week and try my luck for a few Swordfish.

Hi T, I have started emptying the bin with one of them grab style litter pickers out of the bin into normal and manageable size to handle bin bags just to save 21 quid "ish" per 100 wheelie bin bags for the club. Mind you when they start splitting or humming I change the bags, the bag guage is not good and that's why they are doubled up. I did do some sums on providing the three bins and the emptying of them each week and it worked out with the just over a hundred S.A.S members...60p each a year from each member would cover it, not a bad figure relating it to members however when you work it out on active members " and I have not" it seems a tadge more pennies than that...This still does not answer your bag question so pm Steve and I am sure he will bring some to the meet on the 6th as he was kind enough to drop some around to my house last month. If anyone wants one of them litter pickers to use for a clean up or bin emptying the pet shop in Shoreham High Street have them for sale at a tenner" cheaper than a mobility shop"...They are better than grabbing rubbish with gloves because you never know what you are picking up.... hooks e.t.c...Well worth getting one.

I would worry too much about the cost as I have found a cheaper source for next time. And they 130gms thickness not 90 gms. The ones we have , which I think are fine cost 25p each (ish ) a new ones will be 18p.
I am sure club can run to £30+ p/a and bear in mind that from late Oct the replacement requirement will be a lot less..

i will put one view across at the meeting and that is to increase or change the 'solstice cup ' ( which is a without adoubt a fantastic initial idea ), to a trophy winning meeting for every season ( i.e. 4x per year ) . i think it will hold great support and could also increase funds, without seeming excessive.

Well like it or not here I go...we have a few members that help with the bin or should I say bins now on the arm, however it always seems to be the same few " and a big thanks to us all who do" members that do the dirty deed. I enjoy being a part of this club and I find it hard at times finding time to empty the bin or have the odd clean up but I do manage to wedge it in with my hectic family and working life....On the cards we have over a hundred members and fair enough some of us may not be on line or local however there are a few members who are and see this thread and don't help with the clean. Sorry like it or not again but it needs doing don't you think, come on chaps:).... I am a nice chap really:blink:.

Maybe an undeniably fair comment but what about someone like me who works in London, doesn't fish the West Arm on any kind of regular basis and lives 8 miles away? If you want the club to be confined to anglers local to Shoreham and/or confined to anglers who undertake to empty the bin x times a year that's fine - change the rules to exclude deadweight like myself and go forward with a smaller but more active and committed membership.

Not looking to confine the club in any way at all Mark, but Tony does have a point. It's not about commiting people to empty the bin on a regular basis either - we simply want people to get more involved. There are meetings, fishing meets, fish-o-thons, comps, casting and clean up sessions as well as the mundane bin emptying duties.
Very relaxed rules for the club were established at the beginning in terms of simply agreeing to the aims and there will be no changes unless they are voted for by a majority at club meetings. Happily, more people are turning up to each meeting and these matters are being dealt with in an increasingly "inclusive" manner, but even so it is still possible for any member to email me or Grahame to have their opinion voiced if they can't actually come in person.
If you have any ideas on how we can spread the load on the bin problem then let me know and I'll make sure they're aired. That's what it's all about - airing views and not letting any particular party nurse a grievance, real or imagined. There will be no witch hunt to try and identify members who don't attend regularly because, as you say, not everyone is local but there is definitely room for improvement within the membership we have. It's a question of being equitable.
Although I live closer to the arm than yourself, I'm not exactly on the doorstep so I do understand your point. If every member just emptied the bin once in a year it would get done more than twice a week! (we now have three bins by the way). So please, let's not over-react and you are most definitely not "deadweight" .............. unless it's a tackle conservation comp at Chesil :D
I reckon the bins are now brimming since Thursday and I expect after a busy weekend too on the arm so all going well I shall have a bash at them tomorrow morning, if I don't get a called into work that is:blink:.

We have some ideas on how to confound them next time, but just shows the kind of mentality we have to deal with on occasion. :uhuh:

Suggest we use the curtain wires I mentioned, they will be of no use to anyone, cost a lot less, and should not get nicked

I have today placed a post on South Coast , asking for any info as to offenders ,
should be worth watching for replies

i was prepared to walk the arm and pick up plastic litter & line, but it was spotless!!.
i got the feeling that any scrote chucking crap around his feet, would of felt very conscious with 60 eyes looking at him.

They are same size as before ( maybe a touch wider ) in slightly heavier gauge. They are not noticeably stiffer but stronger, and cheaper
Anyone want any then PM and I will meet up or give you my address to collect from. I live on the beach so you come virtually past my house when go to the West Arm.

Took off one bag of rubbish from the arm this afternoon between the three bins and it seems like the end one fills up first as it was almost full and the others were of course not" why did I type that?"...I have placed some water pipe fixing wonder stuff that goes rock hard over the bolts etc of the bag holders so if that does not work.....I will resort to slipper limpet mines with a cherry on top!.

Just had a wander on the Arm. Full to bursting with about 60+ on there.
So you all know I have left 2 replacement bags in each bin. Just dropped them behind the one in situ.
All 3 were less than 1/4 full and there wasn't much rubbish on the Arm Loads of shingle and weed but not litter.
Could be another matter in 5 hours time though.

A WARNING FOR ALL BIN EMPTIERS
On Tuesday when Brian Emptied the bins, he found a bag of stones in a bin tied up with a string of traces/feathers , Obviously with the intention of causing some sort of injury to who ever emptied the bin, This practice is an obvious malicious act to cause ABH
Please . when emptying the bins WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES and report any similar acts on this thread
Its not the first time bags of stones have been placed in the bins

G, the bins have been filling up pretty quick of late...Almost the next day at times after an empty. What a result from our club as some anglers are aware of the problems and they are using the facilities that we have introduced thanks to our requests to the PA. There will be and of course when you look at the arm at times some anglers that could not give a sh@t about what they do and how they leave the place when they walk away from a hobby that they obviously invest in and respect:blink:???...I don't understand it myself. We will never win this so called battle, however we are making a difference and it is being noticed by others which is nice to hear. S,A,S not even a year old and it has a strong hold, cheers to you three who started it and I am not being cheesey. What a club!.

Have got some H. Duty cable ties which may be utilsed to secure it.
Failing that a battery that kicks out 10k volts when scumbags disconnect.

Fish being caught, see update on sas sticky
Just a note to say be aware of hooks etc when emptying the bins. Gray and myself did the arm today and we used litter pickers and I must say that Gray" Bungy" was sensible enough to have a big fat pair of gloves regardless. However... when I unloaded the bags at the car park" with no gloves!!!" from my trolley I copped a jab from whatever on one of my pinkies and I am worried that anyone who should take a bag off the wall and slings it over their shoulder may cop a similar injury or possibly a more serious one.
Take care!!!.

Met up with Brian on the Arm today, he was doing the bins,
I did not know until he told me today, that following the theft of Tonys Bungies, Brian had replaced them with some elastic cord, at his own expence ,Heedless to say that the cord on the first 2 bins has been nicked, only that on the bin at the end of the arm remains,
I thing that in future we must tie the bags on with some of the many meters of waste line dumped on the arm or in the bins,
We cannot expect those members who go out of their way to keep the arm clean and empty the bins to be out of pocket
Gray

Had a wander up the arm and emptied 2 which were over-flowing.
By the smell full of bait and was as much as I could do to lift them both. Many Thanks to Dave Jordan who came to the rescue and gave me hand back with them. Third bin only half full and couldn't have carried a third anyway.
Replaced bags, and extra bags dropped in the bottom for replacements. Intended to replace the straps ,but unfortunately, due to an error by the engineering dept they were too piggin small. They were measured up on next doors bin which must be a different size.
Back to the drawing board.
Several anglers up there and were getting Scad, Gars and mackie all on float.

Folks,
The arm has been crowded today with tinsel chuckers after the glut of Makki coming in, When I got down there at 0830 today, the arm was a ruddy mess, litter everywhere, on both upper and lower decks. I did a litter pick on the top deck , but didnt touch the lower. (find those ladders a tad difficult)
Bins are full to overflowing, I couldnt empty them today cos I had to cart off a fair weight of fish, and didnt have a trolley or gloves.
Is any one available over the weekend to come down and give a hand to do a complete clean up and bin emptying,
Whilst I was sitting on the top of the arm float fishing over the wall ,Wally 1 goes to the first bin and promptly put a string of feathers and some makki scraps into it, I jumped on him, He wont do it again, He was not the dont give a damn type either, quite a well bred chap in his 60s (like me) When I enforcibly pointed out the error of his ways, and the fact that our members have been injured by hoks in their hands he did apologise, and said wont do it again, I removed said objects and consigned them to MY bin at home
I will keep PC switched on and moniter it frequently so if anyone willing to come down Sat or Sun, post here

Also some B*st*rd has poured petrol in bin one. Have had a shower , changed my clothes and can still smell it,..
Think we got the blow we were waiting for, sea is coming over the top some sense.

There would be 2 people in the club that was on the arm today emptying bins or cleaning the arm today wearing yellow hi vis jackets. Grahame "Tomfoolery" was there first thing and I was there from about lunchtime for a brief bin sweep " whilst at work:clap3:" if it was me sorry I did not say so or ask fella.
Were you the chap that used the lav when me and my boss were outside having a fag sheltering from the rain?.

i lasted 2hours at high tide. read your requests looking to see if other sas members would be on the arm, so i should have asked. my apologies.
as for the women fishing, never before before have i seen anyone fishing in such wet conditions wearing CROCS!!!!not just any old crocs, but ones that colour matched her reel line........as Andy Colmer would say ' brilliant' ( in a welsh accent).
i did offer her some advice , as a good sas member should. that she should try fishing with her reel the right way up. .. i thought it might increase her casting distance somewhat

More yob trouble on the arm
Tony and I went to the arm today for a bit of worm drowning and bin emptying,
and this is what greated us, First bin was empty ,bag was also missing although spare bags in the bottom, so re-placed bag and went on to the second bin, again bin empty but no bag, so replaced with fresh bag and started off to the last bin, thinking at least someones emptying the bins but why not replace bags, As we approached last bin there on the deck were the remains of 2 large fires surrounded by loads of budwiser bottle tops, The fires were the contents of the first 2 bins, and were obviously quite intence because what was left of the bags was welded to the asphelt, Third bin had bag intact and was almost empty. Now from my limited knowledge, it is not that easy to set light to bin bags (cos they just melt, and damp/wet newspaper that usually fills the bins, ) lying near to the ashes of the fire I found some really dry and well scorched cloth material, So remembering Grahames experiance with the petrol in one bin!!!
Do we now have some budding arsonists targetting the arm.
I feel certain that the fires were NOT started by anglers, judging by the amount of beer bottle tops lying around, no sign of the bottles though, they are possibly in the harbour somewhere .
Glad to say that so far, the bins are intact but my worry is FOR HOW LONG, stll we did catch something and did a good clean up of the arm

bungy, well done for the efforts and i'm sure others will be alert to the recent activities. ..... petrol+idiots+alcohol= ?
i gota say i always had my doubts about this one! its a great idea but how long will it last due to the fact that shorham is chav bandit country! i mean its a p*ss poor town with no clubs pubs anything
of intrest the biggest thrill alot of these kids get would be to burn a big plastic bin will high on cheap drugs like acid and speed!

geffaz, i know what you've said from the beginning , that your amazed the bins have lasted this long ( and so am i ). But even if some doughnut did burn and run tonite , i think so much has been achieved by the sas, the support from sas members and the port authority would galvinise to combat this wombat!!!.......geffaz , all respect to you, but we ain't givin up. as fat boy slim would say ' we've come a long long way together'.
good stuff mate! you still have my full support
sorry for sounding negative!
i am a number in the sas but yet to
go to a meet or do anything to help
(this is down to work not apathy)
but will one day honest :notworthy
just keep pushing the mighty sas and it might just buckle:giveup:
is mr beachams an active member still?
All three bins are still in place however it was just the bags that were removed and torched "for now!", Gray and myself today were quite amazed at the heat damage that was generated from the bags alone so without a doubt some sort of accelerant was used and if this sort of behaviour continues with a beer fueled few there may be some serious injuries sustained. This really has to stop before it's too late for someone, a 10p size or less burn bloody hurts BIG TIME as I have had a couple or three whilst cooking at home so anything larger than that is most definatly a chuffing hospital or even worse a funeral job. It's not worth it.
It does my swede in a tadge:banghead:

Its all madness, for every group of people on this sodding planet trying to do some good there is another group of numpties who do the most bizarre things to mess everything up. A reflection on society i guess.
My garage got done for the fifth time in two years. Just had the door fixed (took the council 4 weeks to do) and came out this morning to see the garage next door has been done. Some may not agree but i for one am up for a bit of self policing. The law and council do bugger all.
Rant over
UWI
Its nothing new, lads. When I was a teenager it used to be possible to fish Worthing Pier 24 hours a day as it was never locked. But too many drunken cretins started vandalising the place after dark and next thing, they started locking the pier at night. And of course, when these yobs started destroying the place anglers beat a retreat for fear of ending up in the sea themselves. My objection to that then, and now, is that the council refused to countenance freelance anglers having controlled access (elfin safety) - there are still matches after the pier has shut and we have used it with the Council's permission for a couple of fishathons - but by and large there is no fishing after the pier has closed.
If there were any anglers on the arm while these lowlifes were enjoying their drunken infernos I imagine it was fairly tense for them and if it had been chicken me, I would've packed up. My point is that if there is persistent vandalism then maybe SAS needs to consider whether to approach the PA to discuss restricting access to the arm after dark. It would cost and it would take time to implement but maybe as a long term project it would be well worth it.
Bins emptied today and I wombled the wall, looks like someone had a firework do in the car park also some spent fireworks along the arm. Nice and tidy apart from the stones on the corner.

There is always going to be some cretinous behaviour going on down on the old girl i have a feeling that this could be caused by a group that i would not be PC to mention
Yourself, Brian and others have done a magnificent job with the bins etc over the past year and if i was in high places you would get the MBE.

Wednesday 5/3
Tony Brian and I met up on the arm today, and had quite a long discussion about the bins. From inspection of the missing bin site it is obvious that it was not wrecked by the storm,The eyebolt securing the chain to the wall has been bent and almost wrenched out. no wave did that., Also on inspecting the bins today, there were no bin bags fitted and only about 2 days rubbish in side, mainly newspapers, Evidence of burnt bin liners has been found at the end of the arm,Brian emptied what was left in the bins today, But he is getting pretty fed up of being one of a VERY few members who bother to clear the bins regularly. We will be putting a motion to the committee on the 19th, asking that ALL members whenever they fish the arm,or even just visit it, take SOME rubbish away, If we dont get some extra help clearing the bins, We are going to lose Brians services
Gray
Bins emptied today...Some weed etc on the corner again, let's hope the blow up will not contribute to it, a wash off would be nice. Bins still intact despite attempts from some little Fxxxxrs to remove them " little they are regards of their size".
