Fishing Report for Week of July 29th 2007, Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle
Written by: Stan Gabruk

It’s a funny world we live in here in Puerto Vallarta. We have a tendency to become complacent and take for granted the beauty and splendor of Puerto Vallarta. I forget that people will save their money for a year or more just to have the opportunity to come visit this emerald jewel of a city for maybe a week. As I look out my “office window”, better known as my shop (Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle) on the Marina Vallarta boardwalk, I can’t help but think how my worst day of the year is someone else’s fantasy life. It’s kinda hard to complain about sending people out for the fishing experience of their life. It’s my great joy to see a customer come back to dock with a Monster Yellowfin Tuna, with a smile to match. This past week was spectacular for fishing here in our World Famous Fishing Grounds and it’s just the beginning of our High Season for fishing!

An example of this is what’s happening at The Rock, better known as Corbetena. I don’t care if you can only find a row boat and a hand line, find your way out there and you’ll be rewarded with a “Finned Fantasy”. Black Marlin in the 800 lb. range has been boated here in the last few days. Blue and Striped Marlin are readily available as well, Sailfish too, but not in great numbers. Having said that, this week there were some Sails released that looked and fought like a Striped or Blue Marlin, that’s how big they are. Some over 120 lb s, which is big for a Sail! Yellowfin Tuna, you bet. Monsters over 200lbs are being boated daily, nothing is under a 100 lbs. Bait has been a on and off issue the last few days. Some days there’s plenty of bait, other days, it’s been another story. Green water has been an occasional problem with the rains, but blue water has been in the area so it hasn’t been a big problem for anglers….. If you’re interested in Giant Pargo, they’re in the 60 lb and up range… So what’s stopping you Buckwheat?

El Banco, the same old story. Nothing much happening there and for the most part it’s being ignored because of all the action happening at Corbetena. But bait is available there and Yellowfin Tuna in the 50 to 100 lb. range have been boated by the few venturing out. We’ll keep an eye on conditions at El Banco. Who knows, El Banco may have a late start this year… stay tuned.

El Morro this week for the angler looking for Dorado or Mahi Mahi has been firing like a machine gun. Mahi Mahi right now are averaging from 35 lbs to 50 lbs. Live bait, lures, anything shinny will get a strike, so even if you have bad luck and couldn’t get a hook-up if you tried, then it’s time to go for a sure thing. Bonito, Jack Cravells, Mackerels, even Sails are just waiting for your bait!

In-shore and points north of Punta De Mita are turning into old reliable spots! Roosters at the river mouths and along the trash line in the bay are almost automatic. Smaller Dorado, Snappers, Bonito and of course Mackerels are there for the taking! North of the point, I still can’t believe they’re pulling in Blue Marlin within eye shot of shore, it’s amazing. Sails are also in the area, but this is a year-round occurrence now. Dorado at the buoys, Pargo where there’s structure, Dorado everywhere.

This is High Season; it’s only going to get better in August and September. This year conditions are more predictable than in the last few years with El Nino. The summer has been mild, with calm seas. Even the tropical storms we’re used to dealing with at this time of year have been almost nonexistent. The only missing ingredient is you!

If you haven’t noticed, we’re into the rainy season now and you may get wet at any time of the day. When you’re going out on a charter and it’s raining pigs and chickens in the early hours of the morning, don’t bail out on the charter! In a matter of an hour or so, everything will change. Clouds move and when it’s raining in buckets, it can’t last long. So don’t be a Panzy, get your bathing suit on, grab an extra towel and get out there. The worst thing that will happen to you is you get a little wet. The fish don’t care if it’s raining and neither do real fisherman… so no mommies! Or in English terms, don’t be a Cry Baby.

Master Baiter’s is still supporting Project Graffiti. With the folks in the Mayors office supporting our efforts with paint, we’re going to expand the project throughout other heavily traveled areas where these signs of gangs exist. It’s our city and our responsibility to keep our world a nicer, more beautiful place to be. You can donate time, money or just spread the word. Master Baiter’s is making a difference, with your help; we can continue this city-wide fight!

Coming out of the full moon phase, the Yellowfin Tuna will bite later in the morning and earlier in the afternoon, Plan accordingly.

Well, that’s about all I have room for this week. Thanks to my regular readers for your continued support and to my new readers, welcome. As usual, you can always contact me with your questions about fishing, book fishing charters, or just get information about anything and everything in Puerto Vallarta. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll find someone who does.

Until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
