Had a reply to my email from the Breakwater Expert, which I have pasted below. Not looking as good as it could, but hey I am sure we will all have a good night out.
Reply from Alan Yates:
Hi Damian,
Its not the best time for fishing the breakwater, can be slow in mid summer with lots of species having gone into the North sea, better in Sept and Oct when they return.
At night lots of dogfish both sides to bottom baits, also pout. May be best to fish alongside front wall for bass, off the bottom or just under surface, booms, light line, head hooked ragworm. Apart from bass, pollack and scad.
You can also fish with a large fresh mackerel bait alongside wall for bass.
Tight lines,
Alan
Thanks for posting that up DSD - not too promising but who knows what might show? A bit of pollacking and scadding like we used to do on the pier can be pretty good fun!

i agree, it's as much about 'the meet' as what we'll potentially catch, gives people the chance to fish for new species, i've never floated on there, the tide moves so fast that i'd be more tempted to chuck out a plain lead and then slip the float down it ! not sure that'd work too well though, we'll see !
as i've said before, if it works well, i might well book another for end sept / early oct.

I agree, it's all about the meet anyway and it'll be real hoot to fish all night. I'm sure our ingenuity will coax some fish out - it can't possible be worse than my trip to Shoreham West Arm the other night and I still managed to enjoy that lol

I'm concerned that I may not be able to hold bottom very well with the gear I have as all but one of my beach casters are 5-6oz and cope better with 5oz leads. I have used 6-7oz leads with them before but can't cast very far as they didn't like it too much. Do you reckon I'll be able to hold bottom ok with 6oz grip leads as the tides are pretty small? Also what's it like holding bottom by the wall for Bass with a 3 - 4oz lead?
I've got the Friday off work and will be down Dungy during the day before heading off to Dover if anyone is around for a warm up fish?

hi tom,
don't be fooled by it being a 'small tide'. if you fell in, you'd be a mile away by the time the lifeboat was even launched ! (no-one will fall in though ! ok !)
when fishing down the side (outside), i used a 6oz breakaway lead, dropped slightly uptide, with a fair bow of line when on the bottom, this was on a 3oz bass rod btw, if it was held off bottom, the tide would pull it to about 30 degrees off centre.
re the big leads, i used 10oz on a big tide once, you can't cast it (unless you have an uptide rod capable of doing so), but you can lob it, you don't need to cast far, my 4-8oz rods coped fine.
inside you might be able to get away with a 6oz, but you'll need to make sure to use either the uptider gemini leads, or very tight breakaways, again, cast uptide and let out a good bow of line.

Ok cheers Hugh looks like I'll have to cobble something together in order to stand a chance of catching.

you'll be fine with 7oz on the inside, though ideally 8oz outside,
