*** Scrabster Trip May 2008 ***

I'm planning this for either 24/25 (Bank Holiday 26th) May. My booking will be for MV Stormdrift II

Names I have already;
Me
Kenny G
Bmac
PeterTheFisherman

Who's in?

I don't want to discourage anybody, but boat fishing at Scrabster is not for the faint hearted. Conditions are often rough and it's not for those who are prone to sea sickness whatsoever. Just ask DeputyDog or Sultzer?

I've got no doubt that this will become over-subscribed very quickly, in that case, I'll ask for a volunteer to organise booking a second boat (or even a third?). Deposits will be required in January and full payment to be made before the trip. the more I think about it, there's no reason why we couldn't fill three boats and have a right good weekend of it?

Traditional Sweeps to apply;
1. Heaviest Cod - a bottle of "unusual" beer to enter
2. Heaviest other fish - a rig to enter
3. Most species - a bar of chocolate to enter

Ticketty Boo,
With ref. to posts 27 & 28 and my pm's you have still not added my name to your crew list for this trip.

In fact you have not replied directly to me to confirm that.

Perhaps you can do that so I can arrange accomodation if necessary.

Your reply to my pm does not confirm I am on the crew -

Quote your pm:
Steve,

Scrabster may & august trips are going ahead with no problems.

Regards

Hi Gordon, have just pm'd you with a copy of the pm I sent you on the 6/3/08 - it included my mob. no.
Deposit was posted the same evening.

As you know I have just had a week away - fortunately I was pm'd you were looking for me. As you know I confirmed directly with the skipper as I have not got your phone number.

Do you want me to send another deposit cheque?

Nick, spoke to Gordon today about picking up your rods and reels on the way up which he was happy to do but then spoke to Davy who told me that he had thought you had given them to him for keeps and so passed them on to Norrie to sell at some car boot sale - Davy says you can have the 3 quid that Norrie got for them.

Saturday windspeed predicted to be 17-25mph SE. I'll try and update this every day this week.

SandTiger
19-05-2008, 19:37
A bit early for forecasts to hold weight but SE is good in any event. What I'm looking at now is showing SE 10 knts (12mph) for the morning. Cyclonic East rising to 13 knts (14mph) with a swell height of 0.9m for Saturday and for Sunday SE 13-15 knts (15-18mph) for the morning freshening to SE 19knts (21mph) for the afternoon with a lift of 1.2m to 1.5m throughout the day. So the 1800hrs report reads a bit more positive but it is still early days for reliable long range forecasting.

I was PM'd about species, bait and tactics so will post the reply here as others may find it to be useful:

Glad you're looking forward to the weekend. There is a video on my web site that maybe helpful as it covers general tactics and baits - Plaice are starting to show and will take worm baits to small hooks, beads and a spoon will add attraction also. Same tactics for Dabs, Flounder, Megrim.

Try to get your hands on some frozen Mackerel, Squid and also Mussel (Don't forget the bait elastic for the Mussel). Hopefully Mackerel to feathers or tinsels. Launce are a cracking bait for Pollock on light gear and are caught in greater numbers with sabiki rigs. Try lures also for Pollock on light gear. Looking at the big Ling marks may prove productive and they will take a baited pirk hung off some baited Hokies or feathers - This will pick up Cod also. Chance of Ballan & Cuckoo Wrasse also. Although the tides will be dropping we do have a fair tide run and heavier weights between 12-16 oz will help you hold bottom at times.

See, Another fibber Nick...Davy has a diesel car !!!! so charged him 50P for fuel.....:)

BTW, Only got 85P for the rod, and had to pay the guy £1 to take the reel..where did you get that from ??......so, you now owe me a small fortune !!!
Think it amounts to about 65P.....if payment is not soon, yer name will be in the shop window!!! sorry mate, but I have a family to keep :):)

There is very little fresh or frozen mackeral to be bought up here at the moment, what there is bloody expensive, £2.50 for 3 frozen fillets!
I searched Wick and Thurso, only Thurso tackle shop had any.
None of the fish shops or super markets had any either.
Plenty of squid though, frozen & prepared in Tesco, or 1lb boxed complete from either tackle shop.
Can fresh picked mussel be frozen, does any-one know please?

Didn't manage to get out last night unfortunately. Franco McScrooge decided to put business before fishing! I know, I know - the concept is utterly inconceivable, isn't it?

He dropped a 2p coin last week and has three stitches in the back of his napper where he bent down to pick it up and it hit him on the back of the head before it landed :bleh::bleh:

I have just sorted my chest freezer. Not done any skate fishing this spring so have a load of last years mackerel left.

Will bring up a cold box with about 60 mackerel. If we catch fresh perhaps we can choke some seals with the freezer burnt ones.

For those of you with cars the cheapest petrol is at Wick Tesco, currently £1.15.9, but I'm told its likely to go up over the Bank Holiday, so it may be worth you filling up on the way up to Thurso?
The new Tesco in Thurs does not do petrol btw.
