Fishing Report for week of Sept. 2, 2007 for Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle
Written by Stan Gabruk

It’s High Season for fishing here in Puerto Vallarta and things are beginning to rock! All species of Marlin are swarming in the deep, blue water locations. Monster Yellowfin Tuna are showing up on the docks daily. Water temperatures are steady in the 86 degree range and bait is plentiful most days. But not everything in perfect in Fish City, but almost!

In the past few weeks Puerto Vallarta Anglers have had their eyes on Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, and sea conditions. For the past few weeks there have been a few Tropical storms marching their way up the coast, past Acapulco and into the northern areas near Cabo before they ran out of gas. Two Hurricanes coming out of the Caribbean on the Atlantic side of Mexico have also brought rain, but that’s no biggie for us in PV since the Hurricanes run out of gas once they reach shore. Besides, rain in PV is a blessing from the heavens with the kind of heat and humidity we see here at this time of the year.

We haven’t talked much about El Banco for the last few months, except for some scattered reports with Yellowfin and Marlin, but that has all changed now! Monster Yellowfin, the biggest we’ve been seeing lately, are hooking up in all the usual locations like the high spots. These Yellowfin are anywhere from 75 lbs to 300 lbs. depending on what happens to come across your bait. Black, Blue and Striped Marlin are thick out there with five hook-up per day common place. Remember it’s up to you to bring it in but the fish are here and it’s getting better daily. So if you’ve been heading out to the crowed waters around Corbetena, you now have a real option that makes the extra fuel cost worth while.

Corbetena, which has been the hot spot for the last month or two, is still HOT! It’s fertile ground for Sails, Marlin, and Yellowfin. It seems to be bouncing between Corbetena or El Banco for which is the best place to be on a daily basis. Bait has been a touchy subject in these areas. Some days it’s plentiful, other days you’ll be glad you went to PV Marlin in Marina Vallarta and purchased one of the new baits known as a Wilkinson Little Tuney. But live bait is king, but come prepared with options when it comes to baits. Google Eyes are working also and should be in your arsenal every time you go out, if you think you need them or not, do it. Cheap insurance can save an expensive trip! But the bottom line when it comes to Corbetena, just get out there, you’ll come back happy.

Rooster fish at the Marietta Islands and El Morro are great for those looking for a closer to shore, shorter duration trip, yet are still looking for “tear your arms off action”! Roosters have been running in the 30 to 50 lb range. If you know anything about a Rooster fish or Jack Cravelles for that matter, they fight like a fish twice their size and four times as mean! I never tried eating Rooster fish until the other day, and I ate it thinking it was a different species…. It was great! So don’t believe the stories Rooster fish taste bad, it’s good to me and I’m a “fish Snob”. Sails, Dorado, Needle fish (Mex. Barracuda), Snappers and the list goes on are here also. Just depends what day you happen to be there.

The inshore fishing from Yelapa to north of Punta Mita is fantastic for short days. Roosters, Snook (at the river mouths), Dorado, Bonito, Snapper, and fish I don’t even know the name of, are all well in abundance and waiting to take your bait amigo!

We all know that fishing is not an exact science. With weather patterns and sea conditions always a variable, we have to remember this level of fishing is the equivalent of Elephant hunting in the old days. This is the highest level of Sportfishing an Angler can become involved in. Boats, Poles, Reels, line, lures, Captains, First Mates, you name it, they all need to be in perfect shape to land that Monster Finned Fantasy we’re all going after. It’s also easy to forget that fishing at this level has it’s dangers also, no matter how experienced or accomplished a Captain or Crew is, things can happen in less than a heart beat that can be dangerously surprising. Just a week ago, Josh Tempel had a 800 lb. Black Marlin launch it’s self in the air, fly over the back corner of his boat, land on the Transom and scare Josh (and everyone else) half to death! So being intoxicated during daylight hours can slow reaction times and you wits. A swipe of a 300 lb. Monster Tuna Tail can knock you into tomorrow and a hospital bed on very rare occasions, so be prepared, be careful and enjoy the experience of a life time. So remember, we’re here to help.

Master Baiter’s is still supporting the city with the Graffiti Clean up project and looking for concerned citizens to donate time, money or labor. It’s all part of making PuertoVallarta a better place to live or visit! So come down to the Master Baiter’s Shop on the Malicon in Marina Vallarta, next to Suzy Wrongs and do what ever you can, everything helps!

The Ujena Bikini models were here last week in PV and held a fishing tournament. The photo shows Amber kissing her 236 lb. Yellowfin Tuna; it was the tournament winner of the Tuna Bite Tournament! The other photo is with me, the girls, and the winner himself, Dan Martin… Congrats and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
