Alright chaps

Im heading out to zanzibar on business for a few days next week. The meeting im going for should only take an hour or so, so i will have 3 full days to myself-is there any fishing in the region?

Absolutely! It's perhaps a bit early for Striped Marlin but the Yellowfin Tuna should be there in force. And the area particularly slightly further north going towards Pemba and the Kenyan border is renowned for the variety of species, particularly the Dogtooth Tuna and Giant Trevally.

A number of our Club members have had great sport, including one World record, from places like Kilwa and Latham & Mafia Islands but that's always been on 'live-aboard' charters from Kenyan ports.

There appear to be several boats however that operate from Zanzibar itself, either day or live-aboard charters. One such that advertises on the Internet is http://www.fishingzanzibar.com/. Just to stress though I've no personal experience of the operation. Its site will certainly, if nothing else, give you a flavour of the area's potential and charter rates. They, day rates, seem to range from 500$US for a half - 5 hour charter - to 800 for a full day.

It is all about Pemba Channel fishing club or if you want to venture to Tanzania, I would recommend Kilwa lodge; this is one of the most understated fishing destinations in the world, stay clear of Zanzibar right now.

You might wish to contact Makubwa to find out the background to his comment, whether it was a 'short term' observation or something more fundamental.

Im not too worried about that mate. Nothing to worry about. Im going to meet the guy who basically owns the island-or most of the hotels anyway, and will be staying in the best room of his best hotel. he says theres nothing to stress about. A full day charter seems like a good idea to me (especially when it will be going on my expesses). Many thanks for the info and links.

The reason that comment was made is the area around Zanzibar is highly overfished at the moment. Which hotels does your friend own - I probably know him. If his initials are J.B then ..... shall we say make no comment on here.

There is fishing to be had but I was merely stating that for the better fishing go down to Kilwa. All the reef fish - Kingfish, wahoo, cuda will all be around. Tuna may not be in concentrated numbers but good shark fishing can be had with downriggers. Odd sailie/ spear may be found very rare.

Enjoy your trip and don't forget take insect repellant for your room at night and don't leave the light on with the windows open.

Just curious as to whether you had a chance to go fishing on your recent trip?

One of the suggestions was, I recall, Kilwa. Over recent years it's built up quite a reputation for its specialised popper fishing and jigging.
