Do any course anglers know how to match fish rivers anymore. All the blokes I know will only fish match Carp puddles now. Are the skills levels in course angling dropping as a result.

Often wondered this myself,you don't see anyone on the rivers anymore,i love fishing for silverfish in flowing water but don't seem to get the chance very often.
Fishing a stick float properly takes a fair amount of skill unlike 'carp trapping'.

I much prefer river pike fishing, sure, stillwater fish grow bigger but flowing water does seem breed a harder fighting fish, and as you say, it takes a bit more skill to master which makes the whole experience more satisfying.

Everyone is more concerned with big bag weights in today's matches, the stick float long trotting angler is definately in decline, no doubt due in part to the number of commercial fisheries stuffed full of easy to catch fish.

the river wye record of 178lb has just - been beaten (in october) with a weight of 316-4-0 of chub to waggler

on same weekend two other records broken, 135lb chub on middle swale, yorks
and 113lb bream on yorkshire ouse, both match wieghts



rivers are still important match venues particularly in the autumn and winter months ie winter leagues

they hold quite a few river comps here,though most of it is feeder fishing

I've seen matches still going on the Avon at Evesham.

It would be a shame if this type of fishing died out in favour of pond fishing.

the reason i started sea fishing is i got fed up with all the matches we fished were oc comercials and you could tell who would finish where at the draw!

I am entered into a series next year,called the all round angler,run by a bloke I know.

It involves fishing different venues,including the Trent,and the only baits you can use are natural ones........no pellets,corn,meat,etc....

Although the commercials are normal baggin venues,it soon alters a lot when you are limited to natural bait......

Also,they are for different styles of fishing......
Take the Trent.....

Stick or waggler only.

Another venue pole only.

Another venue feeder/bomb only.

Another venue Waggler only.

It's a good gig,and the lads who fished it last year are sound.

I live 2 minutes away from the Rivers Don and Rother here in Rotherham,and like nothing more than running a stick through....

But back on track.....
I think a lot of the reasons that 'mercials are popular,is because of the accessability for folk,(handy for disabled,etc),safety,and consistancy.

We have all been on matches on the trent,only to have someone land 1 Barbel,and it's game over,when the rest have struggled to scratch a few bits together....

Then there is travel and bait costs......

So a lot of it is cost effectivity..........

A lot of money on bait and travel,for not much return,and possibly not fishing due to flooding,compared to relative comfort,less travel,less bait,and sack up...................

The canals up there aren't as popular as they used to be either, last time I went piking up there in March there wasn't a soul fishing for miles. Loads of narrow boats though.

There are certain stretches of canal which fishes well,but as always,various issues with dogs,(especially thier eggs!!),bikes,joggers,etc,deters a lot of them.......especially when they go through a 2-3k pole !!!!!!!!!!

There is a nice stretch of the Don at Sprotborough,with a wier,full of fish,including Pike.........

Been Salmon reported around there too,which tells you just how clean it is................perhaps a bit too clean IMO.....

Great thread, all the talk of the river Don and the canal.I spent 6 yrs at Finningley in my RAF days.I lived in Thorne and fished the Stainforth and Keadby canal, the Idle and the Torne and spent many hours on the Trent and Witham.This was between 82-88 when the Trent was in its prime and big catches of chub or roach were always possible.Great days! tight lines, George

The Trent isn't as prolific as it's hay day sadly,due to the ever increasing numbers of big Barbel and Carp being targeted.......

On our club matches,it was either sit it out for one fish,or scratch for bits......

Either way,one fish usually won it..........

The 'Steak and Kidney',is a place i have only fished once,and that was a Fisho' qualifier......came no where,but then again I expected it !!

Lots of water in and around south Yorkshire,and plenty more surrounding it...........it's just a case of doing the graft to find the places.........

Finningley is a bloomin' airport now. :( The Torne is one of my fave pike spots.

I fished Wroot back in the old days, Donny and District AA used to have matches there. They were in the winter and you could get clonking Roach - for such a small river it was amazing.They used to allow pike so you always had a heavy rod set up with lobs for bait.

You missed one Wriggit, the Ure @ Ripon threw up a 123lb 1oz chub haul & 1 solitary roach. The match record would've been broken if the river hadn't risen 4ft in the final hour.

That could've been 3 Yorkshire records in a month !!!!

You can't beat running water fishing, that's why i'll be a die hard river angler until I die.

here in ireland there are loads like the bann, shannon, erne, tyrone blackwater, cork blackwater, royal canal, lagan, quoile and barrow.

i havnt fished in england, scottland or wales yet, so i've no idea about those areas, but if you ever come to ireland i hope this helps.
