View Full Version : Landlocked casting club in Midlands?

Hey

Does anyone know of a field casting club in the Midlands?

Cain kindly gave me some casting tuition last weekend and he's infected me with the casting bug!

I even had to go down the local football field to have a go this lunchtime (where I got blinkin soaked!) to have a practice!

I don't want to start practicing purely on my own as I'm sure that bad habits will very quickly creep in!

Cheers

I seem to recall this coming up before. I don't think there is a club as such but I believe that there is some done at Edgbaston reservoir.

You could try sending a pm to philtherod who is a casting instructor in the South West who may be able to give you more info.

well maybe if we could get 5-6 people intrested and all willing to pay Daves petrol money we could try and get Dave to come to the midlands for a day:g:

he sounds like a very goods instructer:g::g:

Assuming the Dave is agreeable to this, when would everyone want to do it?

I guessing after New Year now, as we're only a couple of weeks from Christmas ATM.

Any suggestions on venue?

HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reservoirs_and_dams_in_the_United_Kingdom)is a list of reservoirs in the UK. Edgbaston looks pretty central.

Short answer to op is no, The Uksf hold there comps at Huntingdon racecourse, a fantastic venue, but being a SSSI it has some restrictions on use. Peterborough showground was used for many years but with house building and other development is now not usable for safety reasons. Surfcast wales is most likely the easiest to get to from the midlands via motorway. ASC at bircham is also within traveling distance, biggest problem being the amount of traffic during the summer months.

there is a farmer in DUNSTUN who doesnt mind you using his fallow field for casting(well he didnt)i will ask him how he feels about a crowd decending on him,the only thing then is to get a casting WIZARD to show everyone how it should be done, watch this space

Hi

I see you mentioning Egbaston Reservoir the bunch I practice with are the culprits but we now use Swan Poll West Brom.

Jock Weir is our coach and we all have a bit of fun be warned though anyone getting heavy is frowned on.

That is not something I have had experience of but it has happened before.

If your up for the craic and a bit of fun PM me I'll speak to Jock I'm sure you'll get a warm welcome.

I see someone is from Fillongley I'm from Coventry originally bu my family came from Kinwalsey .

Regards Dave

Hello Sdewis,

Where abouts in Cov are you, I don't mind paying for some OTG casting tuition if the rate is reasonable of course.

cheers

I'm in Keresley End, but I'm sure that someone else could give you far better tuition than me. I'm still very much a novice caster (compared to many) and could teach you bad habits which could be hard to get rid of.

Send a PM to BlueSaab (I think it's BlueSaab anyway!) and he could tell you where and when their next casting club meet will be.

Cheers

Hello mate, not often enough, but just got myself a new reel and was up the common at 'Sowe Crossroads' just before I went on holiday two weeks ago and the way my casting went in Jersey I need to get up there a lot more often te he. But if you fancy going out and launching a few leads one sunday morning give us a PM. Harry.

cuda, you hit the nail right on the head, 'proper tuition' thats what we need. Unfortunately I dont think we're gona get that round our way, but I for one would'nt mind travelling if something was available (not to far of course), and then perhaps stay on, do some fishing into the night or whatever. So if anyone know's a casting instructor who would be willing to take us on, i'm in. Have an estate car and would'nt mind doin the driving. Harry

Hello Folks,

We want a casting instructor don't we? Well, do you want the good news and the not so good news? Here goes......good new first.

I contacted Sea Angler magazine and they gave me a name and address of a casting instructor in Coventry......yes Coventry!!!:clap2:

He was taught by John Holden

Not so good news:

He told me that he is more than willing to give tuition but cannot find a field that is safe, that is just in case any crack offs which may cause an accident. This is an important point which was made by this concientious chap who is quite rightly thinking about health and safety of everyone. So, I think from what I have been told if a field can be found that is safe for everyone then maybe we may have an instructor.

Harry if there is an instructor elsewhere who can give us some instruction then I'm quite happy to pay my way with the petrol

I live in Keresley End (nr Cov - which I've probably already said), and my Dad owns a farm house in Ash Green (just an acre or so of land). He lives next door to a "proper" farm, and gets on with the farmer. From memory, he may have a field suitable for casting practice, which is far enough from houses, roads and pedestrians. I'll try and contact him and take the short drive over with the dog to walk around and suss it out this week.

Watch this space, hopefully it may turn out to be a venue for casting purposes:yahoo:

Cheers

Hello Cuda,

Ok, if you work in Cov then it might be a good idea to meet up and have a chat and I'll tell you more. If you want to then send a pm and will take it from there. I don't think you can get better than a world class caster.

Sorry for the delay guys, my PC went belly up and took ages to fix.

I've seen the field since I posted and it would be ideal for casting - the trouble is that there's a damn great power line going over the top of it! So, that's a no-no unfortunately.

Sorry for the delay, but have now managed to get hold of my mate in Corley and he said there is a field we can use, it's got no pylons or cattle and it's been recently cut although there are some trees which he said should'nt bother us when I explaned what size we would need (well the size I would need anyway). The only problem is he's going away for two weeks as of next sunday but he will still be at home till the afternoon. And to be honest sunday would be my best day. So if HLS can get hold of that insturctor between now and next week and he's available we're on. Thanks guy's Harry
