need help

hi all i need some info on barbel and chub fishing as my son just cant get on with sea fishing but watches that much matt hayes and john wilson that has been doing my sweede in to taking him river fishing but i no nothing about this fishing ive been to my local tackle shop and got some greys barbel rods with a couple of different tips and some bait runner reels as im told there perfect for a beginer rather than him not watching and losseing rods the rest as towards marks and licenses and pass and rigs is where i need you guys to fill me in all info or pics would be great cheers tight lines

Freshwater angling licence will be required. Not sure what rivers you have in your neck of the woods that have barbel in them. Up here I would fish either the Teme or the severn as both species are here in abundance.

You could join someone like the Birmingham Anglers Association so that you have access to various stretches of different waters or head into the local tackle shop who will guide you to wear you need to fish and should be able to supply you with day tickets as well.

I don't want to go wazzing on folks bonfires,but be ready for a few blank sessions...........


Firstly,get you and your lad a licence from the post office....

They do the weekly,monthly,and yearly....

If your lad is under 12,he doesn't need one,as your licence will cover him.

Next,find out about the rivers in your area....not all are Barbel hot spots,and you might have to do some travelling......

I don't know what your tackle shop dealer did for you on the rods,but you would get a perfectly good pair of Barbel rods for under £50 if you look in the rags........

As easy as they make it look on tele,it is far from it.........

There is time hunting down pegs,baiting up,and a lot of waiting involved.........

If your lad is prepared for that,then good luck,and bag a good 'un...........

Take time to look in the papers,at the specie lads articles,to get some idea on rigs and baits,but don't use them as gospel,use your own ideas mixed in....

check out anglers mail and anglers times 2, and apparently the golden rule is, once uve found some fish (get some quality polarising glasses) and baited them, let them have 20 mins minimum befroe casting.

the best way to get kids into coarse fishing is to take them floatfishing for perch an roach on a pond, gives them a good understanding of presentation, feeding patterns how to strike etc,

never done me any harm!! far 2 many kids these days start out as specimen hunters and they dont understand the basics in my opinion, give ur lad the best start possible mate.

thanks lads for your info my boy is sixteen next year and has done plenty of carp fishing with me as well as pole fishing for huge bags of small fish but i myself get bored to easy on commercial ponds and he has the same problem now thats y i tryd to get him into sea fishing but i mainly try to fish all night tides which the lazy sod likes his bed to much to do that and he likes to go somewhere he can set up and stay with just minor walking about due to the gear he has to carry he wants to just be able to carry a small holdal with mainly his food inside and a small rod we have been given a few marks along the wye and a few on the river t up in birningham but i cant deadicate myself into taking him now til after the new yaer due to work so we was hoping for this thread to run as long as possible to gather more info on tackle and marks as being a hardcore sea angler and a workaholic i want have much time for hunting new marks out with him myself but if i can bring myself to get him a scooter next year he can go looking himself but after seeing the way hes rode a push bike over the last couple of years im to afraid hell end up in a box so id rather him wait til he can drive a car for looking for marks hence the reason for me trying to pry all your marks out of you lol:secret:and sorry for going a bit:offtopic: tight lines

Not a difficult journey would be to Bransford in Worc's, some very good barbel fishing and easy access.

some very good waters over the bridge mate and over your way too !
try a coarse forum called www.maggotdrowning.com and tell him to join as you will get loads of info about what hes after on there!
i do most fishing tactics and fish the severn at bude alot on a area called quatford!
