Thailand next week

Im off to thailand next week for 3 weeks, i am going with the mrs so any fishing i do needs to fit in with our trip. we are arriving in Bangkok and staying for 2 days, we then will be staying in a hut on the river kwai, where the film was made . my plan is to get a hut with a balcony, now does anyone know what type of fishing i can do here.? what rod and tackle should i use? can i buy it in thailand?

We are then off to chang Mai and POI. Finally going south to spend a week on ko chang, any tips advice on any of these places would be appreciated, i enjoy all types of fishing but like the idea of adventure where i can fish on my own not charter,:fishing1::sun:

Given the time scale it's probably worth viewing previous posts regarding Thailand using the Search this Forum facility on the 'front page' of the Asia forum and PM-ing previous posters. You tend to find that people are not necessarily reading new posts every day.

Hi,

I recently went fishing in Bangkok for Mekong Catfish and Siamese Carp.The place was called Bungsam Lan Lake. Plenty of fish to about 60lb and they go like stink. By the end of the day our arms were hanging off.

We hired an english guide, he had all top quality gear and new the best spots on the lake, but you don't have to. I think you can just hire the gear and buy the bait upon arrival.

In terms of Cloudy comments there're a number of guides that fish that lake which is easily accessable, by taxi, from Bankok. And it's a very civilised way of fishing on the veranda of a small bungalow built over the lake on stilts!

Given that you're only there for two days it might well be worth organising a day in advance. Never fished there myself but over the years members of our Club (Sportfishing Club of the British Isles) tend to use this Frenchman, Jean-Francois - http://www.anglingthailand.com/. I'm sure though you could 'google' up a range of others on the web.

One thing to note on that fishery is that if you are lucky enough to catch and land an aropaima then you have to pay the fishery an additional 10,000 baht (180quid) or summit. This is a recently new rule!!

Apparently aropaima are prone to dieing from exhaustion after a long fight so the 10,000baht is to discourage people from catching them. Plus the owner thinks of the aropaima as his little pets.
