See you on the 3rd Feb chaps. Gonna take a drive over to Chesil for the WSFC (used to be DAB) hosted gathering on the 20th. Fancy getting me DVice out in anger!

Thats the rule he broke , other rules are no overhead casting on the top deck and no leaving rubbish.
Thanks for posting these up, Schuey!
Other rules for all matches are 2 hooks max, any bait allowed.

All club matches are £10 to enter .... the Goring Beach Open is usually slightly more. Generally the matches are sizable fish in a bucket of water and weighed at the end ... most species caught survive ok if looked after properly. If someone catches a fish which they want to return immediately (e.g. Mark S had a 2lb 8oz bass), they can be weighed and returned straight away. I dont mind weighing fish if people wish to return them. If matches are fished when smoothounds are a likely catch anglers must weigh and return the fish before they cast out again.

Lets hope the weathers good for the fishing then and with the added bonus of seeing the famous shoes we could all be winners....lets hope there's a stinger or two there.

Not sure the shoes count as a bonus, Ollie! As for the stingers - I've never caught one so would love it if one or two come up even if its someone else who gets it. I assume they count as round rather than flat fish?

Yes a Stinger is classed as a round fish.......may try and make this one...peelers pending.:)

Time to catch a stingray
After tonight pratice session at Climping, tomorrows match will definetly not be held there. Tons and tons of weed once tide started running and was totally unfishable. East Preston was also very bad tonight. With bigger tides tomorrow it will be almost impossible to fish during any tide run. Only good thing was there was plenty of mullet on the waters edge but not interested in feeding.
Will have a word with the organisers in morning and will see wether the match will be cancelled or a new venue is chosen. If it is cancelled and people have got bait for it there is a shoreham match monday evening 7-11pm which should be weed free if people wish to fish it instead .....
P.S ... Mark_S you should turn your phone on more often :mail2:

It has been decided to move the match along to Bognor beach. We'll meet up at the bottom of the road at Climping at around 6pm then leave for Bognor at 6-15ish.
After Climping yesterday we fished Bognor for an hour and had a dog, few pouts and a lobster. Someone futher along ad a few sizable wrasse. Still have a chance of a stingray here as well as a bream or two. But the main thing was it was fishable , unlike Climping.
So anyone wanting to fish should meet at the bottom of the road at Climping at 6pm.

No ideas at all, Schuey. Not been fishing since the last Shoreham match. Wherever there's no weed would suit me! Wouldn't have minded joining you but got my sister coming round for a meal tomorrow night! Be interested to see how you get on...Might get up early and go mackerel bashing Shoreham way - still not caught one yet this year:sad2:

At climping yesterday you could fish within 50 yards and be seaweed free, chuck it any futher and you got weed, though where we fishing if you chucked it you were on rocks, perhaps the weed was just clogged up in that area ? Ad a couple of schoolies each.
Well done, Schuey, on your second successive Worthing match victory last night at Bognor. Happy Shopkeeper second. Bit of a pout fest though Schuey also had 2 dogs, HS also had a wrasse and a lobster and Ollie had a dog. We left Fishyrob valiantly fishing on in search of an elusive hound - any joy Rob?

I won with 2 dogfish and 7 pout for 4lb 0.5oz
Happyshopkeeper was 2nd with 11 pout and 1 wrasse (12oz) for 3lb 6oz.
I had heaviest round with a dog of 1lb 6.5oz, Ollie had 2nd heaviest dog.
Think steve had an undersized ray, maybe an undulate ?
Shame it fished so different to how it did just two weeks ago.

One problem has arisen with this choice of venue, at the start of the week it was deemed unfishable due to the beach being covered in weed, todays strong winds wouldnt have helped at all. Winds are suppose to be breezy next few days so kite surfers could also be a pain in the @rse.
One club member is going to try the area we plan to fish and see if it is possible to fish and let us know what he thinks.
It has been suggested that IF the shoreham beach area is deemed unfishable the match will be moved to White Horses area and fish from 7pm till 11pm.
Will update when i know all the facts.

Ooh dear, did they catch anything other than weed ?
Suppose if it is too bad on the beach , we could move it to the arm or pier as a last resort ? not up to me and still think beach is the first choice.
It seems the only place that is relatively weed free is Worthing Pier
No mate, the weed was being chucked up onto the arm by the swell and was ankle deep in places i'm told, they didn't stay to long. A few decent fishes were caught middle of last week though:secret:

There was an eight pounder off the marina today. Weed wasnt too bad at all, but I just popped down the inshore, and the slight increase in wind has bought a lot of weed with it. I've given up after an hour and a half of it. Real shame, as the surf is about as perfect as it gets!
The only beach I can think of that doesnt seem to have a weed problem is Seaford!
Sussex Schumacher
28-06-2008, 16:53
Some of the organisers have tried fishing Shoreham beach where the match was planned to be held and found it to be totally unfishable due to huge amounts of weed in the water. This and other peoples reports of up to 20 feet of weed in the water , on the waters edge has meant the match has had to be switched to Worthing Pier.
so meet up on the pier 6-15pm ish, £10 to enter etc. Fishing from 7 - 11pm. See you there.
Chance of bream, hounds, eels, maybe a dog or a bass.
East Prestons match which was due to be fished tomorrow has been cancelled as well because of the volume of weed around.
If the EP match has been cancelled then maybe it'll be a bumper turn out on the pier. Have to try and beat Baz to the spiders tomorrow!

A tricky match…go fish in very close for small eels or go for it off the end and hope for something better or that the first hounds of the year would turn up.
The hounds did show up with just over an hour of the match remaining,Colin managed to hammer out 6 and a pout easily winning the match with just over 40lb,2nd was Fishyrob with 2 hounds for 14/15lb,fortunately I kept my eel which together with 1 hound took 3rd place (an angler with a bigger hound lobbed his eel back as he thought it would be irrelevant…eh Simon?....he won’t do that again).:boxing:

Worthing's next match is this Sunday, 13 July 18.30 – 22.30, Venue to be decided ....... if wind drops (suppose to be), and weed and sea conditions arent too bad Goring has been put forward as a possibility . Tides are very small so weed shouldnt really a problem if the sea is calm. This is only a suggestion for a venue at this stage.
All matches are £10 to enter and open to everyone.
Any news on a venue, i live in worthing, never fished a match and was thinking of coming along to see what its all about.

If shoreham is fishable and the water is as it at the moment , barring a chance of smoothounds in the half hour of darkness, what other sizable fish is there to catch realistically ? At Goring you would get eels and dogfish throughout. I dont mind where we fish though .
Fair point, Schuey. But still get eels over Shoreham, maybe a bass or two, slim chance of a mullet even in the dirty water, flatfish. Yes, dogs would be harder to find but that would be counterbalanced by lack of snags.
Oh well, I'll fish it wherever it takes place.

No hounds have shown at all this week from Worthing Pier, just tons of dogfish and a few eels, spiders ave disappeared this week as well. Dont think you can ban crabs at this stage as imagine most people will already have got some just incase ?
Looked at Goring yesterday the beach seemed !!! totally clear of weed, it gets bad from the pier heading eastwards. Will ave a few casts down there in the morning and see whats its like.

But if you believe its going to be won with hounds the only bait you'll need will be crabs. Also the spiders turned out in force the same day as the last match and were only caught on the pier head. People inshore used spider crab and caught 0.
Good luck to you and your friend at East Preston, but the fish you believe to be around and getting caught are the ones your not allowed to use the proper bait to catch em :hammer:

Sympathise with where you're coming from Highwayman - got no crabs myself so wherever it is I'll feel a bit hamstrung, especially Goring. Will have to go a-hunting if I can find some time. I havent got any crabs either at this stage (will look tomorrow) but where ever the match would have been held, crab would ideally be the bait you would want. If i dont find any i will still go. :fishing1:
If we had decided at the start of the week to ban crab that may have been agreed but if others have already (?) spent their time this week getting some for the match we cant say they cant use it.

Highwayman, you want crab banned because you don't have any spare to fish with? So you want the rules to be changed so there is more of a "level playing field"? Cobblers! You want crabs banned because you know you ain't going to get a look in if you fish without them! It's lucky that everyone else doesn't adopt your attitude in the winter matches on the pier when you have a bucket of whites....or you'd be fishing alone.
Shame on you! :nonono:

Sorry not done any match fishing, but fancied coming along to see what it was about...
Just a quick few questions.
are there any specific rules, i.e. two hooks?
How do you record the weight/length of your fish? i.e do you have to keep them in a bucket till the end? then weigh and release.
Does someone verify your catch etc.....
Thanks

normal rules are 1 rod with 2 hooks max. as the match is now on the beach the fish likely to be caught are hounds, dogfish and eels. If you catch a smoothound it will be weighed and returned straight away. Eels keep ok in a bucket till the end. If you want to return your fish straight away you can weigh them then return them. Somebody close will have a set of digital scales and will write the weight down for you. Fish must be above minimum size limits which are bass 41cm, dogfish 38cm, hounds 51cm , all eels count etc.
No crab  (i need a hug).

3 or 4 of us have got a set of digital scales and will spread them out equally between anglers so people dont have far to go to weigh their fish so they can return them.

The person with the biggest combined overall weight of sizable fish is the winner. Depending on number of people fishing they should also pay out 2nd place and 3rd place. The biggest flatfish, biggest round fish, and most sizable fish also gets you in the money.

The match is still currently planned for shoreham beach with the forecast predicted for tomorrow.

Could be anything in the next match ? Would expect a codling or two to be caught, odd whiting, maybe a rockling or doggie ? If water clears right out should be odd scad, mackerel, and still anything I mentioned before.

Agree on the scad, Ollie. If Schuey reckons he has it in the bag already he must have a secret weapon. I expect he's been consulting his computer again to recall last year's corresponding match?

Is that the match where you blanked Ollie......... ;) I liked the scad. They release well, and sit in a bucket much better than mackerel. But I must admit, if the scad are there in the numbers they were last time, I'm gonna do what Ollie did and fish for a big bassy. With live scad. Which I will have weighed, before putting it on my hook. Which I intend to be a trable, Does that fall foul of the two hook rule? Technically the third hook is a bait retainer, as it will be buried in scad. Adjudicator plz?
Can I get away with it as I will be in Czech for the xmas match..... :(
Oh, and I'll take the £2 on Schuey to win. Unless someones gonna give me 100-1 odds, in which case I will bet it on me......! One take, and I do have a drop net....

Well, what a fantastic match that was. Just goes to show that when you get a combination of decent tides, decent colour and decent anglers there can be some decent fishing to be had. And a monster (conger) lost, after possibly being hooked twice!!
Big thanks to Steve. Just finsihed eating the whiting he donated to me after the event (he had three nice ones) and I must admit I forgot how fresh whiting are one tasty dish. The mrs is very satisfied so I might be in later. And he gave me his left over bait (as did Sussex Schu) So, although I didnt get in the prize money (my mere 8lb odd being way outside the frame) once again it was a pleasure to be fleeced by the Worthing Sea Angling Club!

Oh well at least I didnt rub it in too much :clap2: You took Chelsea's defeat very well - think you realised before the football match started you were going to get beaten by the scousers and therefore had no real hope of getting anything from the game though i'm sure you wont admit it.

Think Darren won with 17 or 18lb ? CarpyKnight was 2nd and was 1lb behind. Think Hotwad was 3rd and Snowy 4th ? 20 fished.
Any more details on the catches? Species, weight etc?
Dissapointed I couldn't make it but also had no chance to get decent bait. Tried Hove instead for a couple of hours with Squid, Slippers & a few sandeel as bait. Couple of decentish whiting + a dogfish and an almost respectable thornie @ around 2lb.

To be honest I didnt take much notice as i **** out again but it was mostly whiting and dogfish, at a guess i would say a dozen codling caught upto 4lb 11oz ? Few big pout for barry, saw mark had an eel. Also the lost conger which was almost netted :fishing1:

Have been asked by the organisers to politely remind "pleasure anglers" that have planned to fish the pier just because the Worthing club have a match on, they will be chucked off regardless of who they are, when the security guards come around to lock up. The Worthing Club are allowed to fish there as they get permission from the council, pleasure anglers have no permission to fish the pier once the pier is locked so if anyone fancies a "pleasure fishing session " down there dont expect to be on there very long.

Hey Schuey, looking back at your original post it says that you must have fished 10 matches to be eligible for entry to the xmas comp. Just out of curiosity, does this mean that anyone who turns up at that match will be told to sod off if they haven't fished the requisite number or will it be an ordinary match with extra xmas prizes restricted to those who qualify?

I do like the sound of the Meridean club, cos they play on my beaches up this end. And look at the results from that last match. More matches on Brightons beaches are needed I feel, to showcase what many old timers here already know, that they can throw up good catches when they are fished well!
But Worthing Pier matches will always be special...... ;)
Wherelse can you pitch your wits and cash against such a high standard of angler, if you dont live near Mr Kipper.....??

Meet up point is suppose to be Marine Gardens beach shelter (approx mile west of pier ) , about 400 yards west of Grand Avenue, is free parking along here so you wont have far to walk.

there was a fair bit of weed about today (saturday) on the beeches, was going to fish the beech but the wind got bad and weed was aplenty, so moved to the pier, had 3 whiting 2 flounders 2 slugs and a codling of 2lb 10oz's few more whiting came up and a bass of around 2lb.
Well done to Schuey, who won the last Worthing match of the year with a flounder and a whiting for 1lb something. As well as scooping the money for winning plus best flat, best round and half the most fish pot, he also got first dibs on the xmas prizes.
