I had one off Swansea - cut through my line so I'm definitely going for a wire trace. Mind you, never really seen a spurdog up close - personally, just going for the I-Spy Ken....

Marcus
11-03-2008, 00:37
get some monsters where we go...Last year i think Rockling and codeye managed Spurs to 13lb or so...Good size that..

Plus we had some rays and smoothies thrown in for good measure...

Squid is the bait of the day...closely followed by mackeral...

I have decided to buck the trend :fishing: I am making up some snoods with 30lb nylon coated wire, to which I am attaching with crimps either a Sakuma 540 Manta 5/0 or Mustad Ultra Point Demon Circle 6/0 hooks. Four foot long snoods with Gemini Link Clip which will attach to main line via Gemmini swivel.

Figured less joints to screw up :fishing: may put in a second swivel on a couple to cope with a sixty pound strap or two :fishing:

ambitious ent you ken! lol

I hate congers :fishing: Fought one once for over an hour with the tide gathering speed all the time, got it to the surface about fifty yards off the stern , started pumping it in got it to about ten yards from the boat, it went into one those famous spins and snapped me off, rod flew back and clobbered a chap called Brian Frisk. My name was S***.

Since then which was nearly forty years ago I have never gone out of my way to catch them, rather do battle with a GW.:fishing:

Hi lads,

Spent last night making wire traces with 6/0 sakuma extras as pennels So I'll be the one with my head in hands weeping when the rig breaks cos I've never done crimping before.... Also had that light bulb moment when I finally realised how you get that bit of rubber tubing over the shank on the upper hook - easy when you do it properly innit...?

Anyway, I've only ever sailed on Anchorman out of Penarth so I have no idea how to get to the berth in Barry - can anyone help with directions please? I'll be coming down 5 mile lane and then along Broad Street. After that, no idea!

Thanks

u was up early ken... resourcing that info!

Woke up and decided on a cuppa, then looked around the world

I was looking forward to this trip, I haven't given up on it yet as the wind patterns are changing by the hour but it does not look very good currently.

Average wind speeds over three sites is currently 21mph, gusting to 30mph which is a drop since last checking for gust speeds.

I think the big problem is Fridays wind speeds whipping up the big seas and obviously reflecting on Saturdays seas.

Ken Davison
24-03-2008, 16:28
Sadly they have revised the weather again for Saturday.

0:00 2:59 5 °c 7 °c 990 mb 2.5 mm 100 % 17 mph 44 mph
3:00 5:59 7 °c 3 °c 987 mb 0.5 mm 100 % 20 mph 48 mph
6:00 8:59 10 °c 0 °c 986 mb 1.4 mm 100 % 30 mph 66 mph
9:00 11:59 6 °c 0 °c 992 mb 0.9 mm 100 % 28 mph 60 mph
12:00 14:59 8 °c 3 °c 998 mb 0.9 mm 97 % 28 mph 53 mph
15:00 17:59 9 °c 5 °c 1002 mb 0.2 mm 65 % 24 mph 44 mph
18:00 20:59 9 °c 4 °c 1004 mb 0.2 mm 79 % 12 mph 32 mph
21:00 23:59 6 °c 3 °c 1006 mb 0.0 mm 77 % 10 mph 28 mph

The maximum gust speeds in the last column if true on the day make it a non-starter.

Hi all while your having a torrid time with the weather some of the lads from the club got out yesterday on the Benjoma 24/03/2008

They went nash way stopping off between aberthaw and nash where they had dogs, conger, rays spotted, thornback & blondes to 14lb8oz oh and two cod 3lb8oz & 4lb all on fish baits.

Anchorman did turn up for a while then disappeared

If you can get out then there are fish but it can also be hard as one of the ex welsh internationals can testify,he had doggies

To be honest Saturday appears to be going down hill very fast

0:00 2:59 5 °c 1 °c 1010 mb 0.0 mm 48 % 11 mph 34 mph
3:00 5:59 5 °c 2 °c 1011 mb 0.0 mm 64 % 11 mph 35 mph
6:00 8:59 5 °c 2 °c 1013 mb 0.0 mm 60 % 11 mph 35 mph
9:00 11:59 7 °c 4 °c 1013 mb 0.1 mm 100 % 14 mph 33 mph
12:00 14:59 10 °c 7 °c 1012 mb 0.1 mm 100 % 18 mph 35 mph
15:00 17:59 9 °c 4 °c 1010 mb 0.8 mm 100 % 19 mph 48 mph
18:00 20:59 9 °c 3 °c 1008 mb 2.1 mm 100 % 21 mph 49 mph
21:00 23:59 7 °c 4 °c 1008 mb 2.2 mm 100 % 17 mph 43 mph

And now the shipping forecast has kicked in with 26mph and to be honest they are never far off:sad:

Just rechecked again today Wed. 26th wind speed 31mph, wave 3.7m, gusting 45mph. all the sites are unfortunately fairly consistent with only minor variations.
