to realistically catch it would be a catfish.a remote chance of catching though would be a sturgeon.
ok,this is'nt really a fish and would'nt want to catch one,but porpoise come a fair way up the severn

the fish you mentioned are probably the biggest, but i reckon the barbel is one of the most beautiful and hardest fighting fish.

This is a Wye salmon that was found dead back in the '30,s. It was estimated at 75 lb.

I don't think either of those are actually native. In any case, I'm pretty sure sturgeon would be our largest freshwater fish, native or otherwise. Here's an account (www.seatroutfestival.com%2Fmonster.htm) of the record-breaking 388-pounder that was caught on the Towy in 1933! Shame that there aren't many of them about these days...

it would be the sturgeon if there were any left !!

but failing that...definitely catfish...i know of a cat that is probably touching 75lb this year...and the largest stocked into the lake was 18lb so it has grown on.

the 100lb catfish referred to were foreigners...brought into the country by some indescribably stupid people. ( i have had to hold my tongue here a bit otherwise i might upset people with the swearing !!)

these fish lead to the catfish record being closed down.

i have utter contempt for these idiots and they should be named, shamed and banned from fishing.

sorry to get on my high horse but i am a cat angler

if you want to go really native then it has to be the pike, and do salmon/sturgeon count as real freshwater fish as they both live in the sea for part of the time?
