After initially being discussed in THIS THREAD (http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99833) it appears the following has been decided upon:
Date: Saturday 23rd February 2008
Location: Scotstoun / Kirkton Beach (ABOUT 3 MILES NORTH OF PETERHEAD) (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=st+fergus&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl)
Tides: Low Water 0801hrs 1.8ft - High Water 1413hrs 12.8ft
Target Species: TURBOT, Flounder, Plaice, Dabs and maybe the odd rogue Sea Trout and/or Bass
Rigs: 2 / 3 hooker flappers, size 4, 2, 1 or 1/0 hooks
Baits: Mackeral, Worms, Squid, Bluey, Sandeel
Parking: (If travelling from the South) North of Peterhead, before St Fergus, turn right at the signpost for the Cemetery. Park by the old cemetery and walk the short distance (5 minutes) thru the dunes to the beach. (Enough parking for 6 - 8 cars).
Alternative parking can be found at Scotstoun Picnic Area, which is the next turning on your right (as you travel North) and again it's a short walk to the beach.
If your travelling from the North, work it out for yourself by reversing the above directions ;)
The beach is fairly clean but does sometimes get a bit weedy - tackle loses should not be high.
Should be a good craic:
So far we have:
Wooky114

Cast along the beach at the beginning/end of the session....
Doh, boat anglers. You got to go for the local rod, its a case of second row versus a prop. They both pack mighty rods but wooky's tackle control should see him through. Well thats what his wife said.

Yup - The Graveyard, park at the Church and we can always move North to Scotstoun Beach if it's not producing. There's enough space over a km of beach there and the maps show where it is...

Saturday 23rd Feb it is - LW 0801 1.8ft - HW 1413
Meet up and fish the flood from say 9am, til 5pm or earier/later... and then if people want to go off and do a night session somewhere on the way home they can...
...or we can spend the night consoling Davy when everybody else has caught turbot ;)
do ya have to walk with the tide if so i'll use the one till full tide

If people want bait for the get together, I'm toying with the idea of placing an order with Big Al's Bait Shop (http://big-als-bait-shop.webs.com/)
LIVE BAITS
FRESH LUGWORM (PER 100) £16
FRESH RAGWORM (PER 100) £17
FROZEN BAITS (Seafreeze)
BLACK LUG (10s) LG £4.00
MACKEREL (2s) £1.99
MACKEREL (FILLETS) PACK £1.99
RAZORFISH (IN SHELL) PACK £2.10
SANDEEL (PACK) SM £1.99
SANDEEL (PACK) MED £1.99
SANDEEL (PACK) LG £1.99

Hi Guys,
Wooky was good enough to put up some preliminary information up about the target species, rigs and baits for the Meet in his first post on this thread.
Target Species: TURBOT, Flounder, Plaice, Dabs and maybe the odd rogue Sea Trout and/or Bass
Rigs: 2 / 3 hooker flappers, size 4, 2, 1 or 1/0 hooks
Baits: Mackeral, Worms, Squid, Bluey, Sandeel
For those of us who don't have much experience in fishing the north-east beaches (me for one!), it would be useful to get some sound local advice about other aspects of the tackle to bring along.
I'm going to make a weekend of it along with my youngest daughter's man, Paul, so we'll be bringing along a couple of sturdy beachcasters, 30lb line straight through on the big reels, pulley rigs and a range of plain and gripper leads for heavy ground.
For the beach work, though, will a couple of bass rods and F/S reels loaded with 12lb line do, or do we need to scale up because of wind, tide and currents etc.? What weight and type of leads would you normally use on these beaches? Would you recommend a typical flattie rig and would this style of rig (beads, attractors etc.) do for the species we're likely to encounter.
Sorry if these questions seem a bit basic, but I usually end up bringing the kitchen sink with me and I could do with scaling back a bit on the tackle shop that usually lives in the boot of my car!

Normal 4 - 6oz beach casters i.e. your Orion, will be fine for the place. It's a clean bottom but you do sometimes get a build up of weed in the breakers. Just keep the rod tip and line high after casting, while in the rest and while reeling in, virtually all the time to keep your line out of the weed if there is any and you'll be fine.
Grips weights can be useful as there can be swell running thru the beach either up or down dependant on conditions. Size dependant on your gear.
The bass gear you described should be fine - I'll be using a 13' Greys PZ Match 5oz beach caster and a 13' 2 - 4oz Bass rod, most likely with a couple of Daiwa 7ht multipliers, spooled with 12lb line and shockleader, as I'll be fishing one rod long and one rod short, probablies no more than 30 - 40 yards out, if that.
The rigs will probablies be a 2 or 3 hook flapper and a flatty rig - and all hook lengths will have beads/attractors/sequins on, but I'm gonna give the fairly lights a miss!

Any useful info you'd like to pass on to others ;)
Nope! You just about covered everything that was sent to me by PM! :)
I have managed to get the day off so will be there, the only problem I can forsee is if there is rough weather leading up to the day which could mean a lot of weed in the water, I will have a check on the Friday and report back.
Basic flattie rigs with beads/attractors are the norm though a 1 up one down or flowing trace can work for the turbot.
A selection of plain and gripper weights would be good sometimes a bit of movement can get the fish to take the bait.
Main bait used there is mackerel which will take most fish though lug, rag, sandeel, bluey and even mussel will give some change baits. The mussel can be effective if there has been some stormy weather previous to fishing.
Standard beachcasters, match rods or bass/carp rods with a lighter weight for some extra movement with 12-18lb line is all you will need.

After the sad news of a forum member being lost whilst fishing and the subsequent appeal that's been started (http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101894) to raise funds for the family, I propose that we have a whip round during the meet on the 23rd, unless anybody else has any ideas for ways to donate cash.
think its probably best thing u can do
wooky114
09-02-2008, 20:45
Gusmcg has started the ball rolling donating £20 (well asked me to cough up £20 on his behalf, which he'll refund back to me on his repatriation to the UK), which I'll match. Everyone can make whatever size donation they wish, if they want to donate at all. I'll collect all the cash on the day and either send a cheque to Terry or transfer the funds via paypal.
i'll just bring some dosh as i no longer have p/p i dint like their charges on everything

As first mentioned earlier in the thread, in this post (http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?p=980947). So far 3 people, including myself are after bait for the meet, which will be getting ordered next week from Big Al's Bait Shop (http://big-als-bait-shop.webs.com/). Postage will be shared amongst those who order - I'll get the bait delivered to me at work the day before and you can collect from me and square up the cash with me at the meet.
Any more peeps interested?

Pity am no at home would have put the caravan down by the beach if you had needed it.
Just thought I would let you see 4 miles of the beaches at low tide. This is Kirkton beach, north of the Kirkton rocks in Wooky's map.

Yup Gus you are right! Did not even photograph the north of the Scotstoun rocks, where Davy and Millser ended up last time to avoid the drifting seaweed!
By the way, was informed by another local "expert" today that it is too cold for the turbo at kirkton beach at the moment, and they are all over the subsea gas pipes off the Gas station.:laugh:
No joke: he is telling me that the gas pipes are warm, and they are all swimming about inshore over them :g::g:

You will get the odd one or two just now but they don't arrive till later on best go down in 10 weeks time. The heat explains what I PM'd you about.
The pipes will be warm due to Boyles law and the pressure in them. Be worth a few drifts over them later in the year.

Aye £20 for every turbo Davy catches, red snapper not been out for 4 nights now, work getting in the road of the fishing. An intolerable state of affairs that is. Think the blasting has driven the fish away so will get out and look for fresh marks, problem being low on hooks.

Work is the curse of the drinking classes, right enough! :D Would it be worthwhile posting some hooks out to you?
Looks like good conditions are forecast for Saturday. Enough westerly wind to help the stiff & infirm to cast the 20M to ge into the fish.

Thanks for the offer but DHL would be about £90/£100 for an envelope out here. Waiting for local supplier to get some, local hooks are real crap quality, Lidl cheapo's 100 times better. Have lost a few good fish due to the hooks straightening out. Going by my reelods built in weight and force estimator fish around 10/15lbs. Should have a resupply from the USA in 14 days also. Looking at making a creel for crabs first then making an otter board so can get out into the deep water, run out line have stop knot set back then clip on wieght and trace to otter board line once out and bounce it out with another line attached so can vary the depth, if big fish then otter line will be used to play/winch it in. Have 80m of 175lb for that.
God, oh for a beachcaster and a trusty Abu lol.

Thought I would give you some directions to the place.
Coming North from Aberdeen, at Peterhead, you take the Bypass road to St Fergus (After stopping at the Big Macs for your breakie) you cross two roundabouts and get to a T Junction at the Waterside Hotel. You take a Left, go over a bridge, then past My hoose (with the yukky coloured garages, and small grass tower), and my in-laws equestrian centre. About a mile past the equestrian Centre you come to a sign to St. Fergus Cementry.
Coming South from Fraserburgh (and fishmarket Cafe) you take the main peterhead road. About 2miles past St Fergus you meet the same sign pointing to the left. (Should you wish to fish the Scotstoun Beach, as opposed to Kirkton Beach) the road down to it is the last road on your left as you exit St Fergus)
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x278/discododtco/signpostfeb20082008_0220004.jpg
When you go down the bumpy road to the Cemetery, you come to a fork (Where there is a pile of tarry road cleanings) To take the left road there leads you to the nearest to the beach (50 - 60 yards)car park, but it is a dubby road so if your ground clearance is low, then it is not advised (No stones on it to tear your sump off though) Most of the locals go there!
I've marked the car parks on the map.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x278/discododtco/Beach.jpg
If you take the right fork, you will reach the Cemetery:bones::bones: car park. There is a half mile walk to the beach from that.
I met the Gamekeeper last week and they don't mind you chosing either parking area on the day. He told me they were having a fox shoot around the links that saturday so be carefull if you go for a p (or other) in the dunes:eek::eek::eek:

Hope you get yer turbo all the same Davy ,pity am stuck out here but hey whats new:bye2:
If weather is as predicted
http://magicseaweed.com/Peterhead-Surf-Report/42/
then the breeze will be slightly offshore at kirkton. The drift will be left to right. Not sure about weed, I don't think the blow will be long enough to dislodge too much kelp from of the front of the rocks. ( There is about a mile of localy known "tanglees" of both sets of rocks at low water on big tides, you can see the tops of it and the breakers breaking on it, and it stops Scooby :boat: dead if i'm stupid enough to forget about it.) but with 3 beaches to choose one can change beach to suit conditions. The wild winds have only just started here tonight, believe it or not. To be honest I think conditions will be fine, but cold.

You coming down for a visit mcdad?
If you're chucking it 25 yards Davy I'm not having a casting comp against you ;)
Cant make the meet guys as much as i would love to, but im sure you will all have a cracking day.
Good luck to all hunting their first turbo and lets hope you all get a few fish.
Tight lines all
PS: favourite 70s game has to be "raving bonkers" and a very silly game called "bermuda triangle" har har
Intend to. Although will leave the fishing to the experts:fishing: I will act a gofur I think as with 4 by4 can charge along back of bents to anyone who has forgotten something or wants some gear fom Hook Line & Sinker. Would also run to Macdonalds for supplies to the starving, if needed. The Beach South of the pirate one actually belongs to the family, so we are hoping everyone has a successful day.
Maybe a good idea to warn the gas terminal security lot just in case they do a "Jobsworth" as I know they have been approaching visitors to the beaches, and they seem to have the right to ask folk to leave the area.

I'll mention it to the Control Room in Peterhead Police Office tomorrow when I'm at work as the cops/security @ St Fergus have to report everything thru there. They can't move you on now since the emergency powers were repealed a few months ago ;) and thanks for the offer mcdad - just know someone's going to forget something... he say's putting the camera on charge... ;)
i'll be bringing everything except the kitchen sink gonna load my mti rucksack up

Going to bring some surplus to requirements tackle with me on saturday, any one who wants any of the following items can have them in return for donation to AKWBERTO fund.
8 inch alloy centrepin reel
alvey sidecast reel
Ocean city auto drop boat reel
fuji sidecast reel
Might be some other bits and pieces as I am having a bit of a clean out
I will volunteer to be general gofur for the meet.:help::help: I can obtain spare equipment, some bait (frozen Mackies) and if someone wants a burger delivered to the bents, then I'm your man. You will see me runing about in an old Daihatsu Van, and can be contacted on a dedicated mobile 07969121343.
Remember that this is generally a cold wind place, as only if the wind is westerly does it not come from the sea so take warm clothing!
The weather today is sporadic showers and blowie winds during them. It is 8C at the moment.

22-02-2008, 12:46
Just had a text of Millser who's on the beach now and just had his first TURBOT of the day, about 3/4lb - just to wet certain peoples appetite's a little... I was up there a while ago it's breezy but fishable and very little weed around. If the wind dies it could be a good day... Will post photo's of the sea state /conditions etc later

As you can see he is heading for the North of the beach, to be able to report on it. Good on him, he has walked at least 2 miles.
