dont overfill the spool if your new to multiplyers , fill it about half to 3/4
then you wont get to many birds nests , then practice over grass stopping the spool when it hits the ground , then when your confident fill the spool more to the edge of the spool about querter of an inch or about4mill

Even when you get reasonable at casting and go for the fuller spool still leave about 1/8 inch of the spool unloaded.

Do be wary though that when casting numerous times in a fishing session it is very easy to make a few loose loops as you wind in and lay the line over the spool .. these can lead to you suddenly finding you have a sudden jerk as you cast past the place of the loose line and cause the spool to speed up thus leading to a birdy ( been there and done it sevgeral times before I realized what was happening. )

I'd also suggest that like most guys once your lead hits the water and you have slowed the spool with your thumb let it go again for a few seconds to not only let the weight sink down but to gently pull off a wee bit more line and then rewind a bit of well laid line back on the spool . This helps to prevent the line binding in on the remaining turns ( they tend to be slacker as they have not been stretched in casting ) which is also a big cause of birdies and snap offs .

Oh one last thing when using a shock leader make sure the knot on the shock leader to main line always end up laid to one side of the spool ( I prefer the left ) for if it is in the middle area your likely to slice your thumb open on the knot as you begin to cast hard and start to let pressure off the spool .
A mild stroke has hit me . I'm recovering but have suffered loss of some memory & have become dyslexic , bear with my posts and like me laugh where you can .

Keep on fighting / taking on the conservation at all costs people or you'll lose out on your sea fishing .
Try and take part in the consultations and put forth sensible suggestions , use the site section for getting your assistance , developing your ideas and finding out information .

    brakes

May seem a daft question but make sure at first that the centrifugal brake blocks are fitted? These can be left out makes casting harder when learning.shank.

theres also the factor take into account that the line level of a newly spooled reel with drop once used, only slightly thou.
I'd be out fishing everyday if I could drive

I'm having some trouble spooling my multiplier (first multi).

I'm putting 40lb mono onto a okuma Mg-30CS and each time I take the tension off the line it balls into a huge birds nest.

I've read to load it onto each side first, then the middle, and to put some tension on with your fingers, with the spool on its side.

    What am I doing wrong?

you wanna fill the spool up then release the tension, no point releasing the tension before its full.

I'm no expert but it could have something to do with the fact it's 40lb mono and it won't lay well on the spool let alone cast well why u gone so high

    Cheers Luke
