if ur just starting some of the lures can be very expensive for what they are, i would reccomend getting a couple of surface poppers, in particular a chug bug. imitation sandeels can be quite effective on their day and are also good for pollock if ur going to target them and id also get a few dexter wedges which are fairly cheap. these would get u started and then u can add more as u go.

my most successful surface lure is yozuri(duel aile)mag popper, but hard to find now.BUT, these are very similar, scroll to sp popper on this page..... http://www.alderneyangling.com/miscellaneous.htm
i have had good results from these sandeels too........ http://www.alderneyangling.com/savage_gear.htm

to be honest, the range of lures available is amazing but have a search through all the previous posts for catches of the fish YOU want to target and see what lures etc they have been caught on and try them for starters, but be prepared to re-mortgage your house once you get the bug !!!

Take a trawl through the fly, lure and plugs forum. Loads of stuff on there which might help.
