aligator gar are troublesome in south Texas and notorius for destroying tanks and ponds. but in some places they are really big and don't cause a huge problem plus i hear they give a decent fight. i read magzines on fishing and in one i learned how to make a gar lure and i will tell you how.
1. Get some nylon rope and a comb
if the nylon is braided don't worry undo the braid about \9-10 cm, this could take a while.

3. comb out the unbraided nylon to remove tangels and knots you don't want.

4. using a small ziptie, ziptie a small key ring looking thing (off a lure or something) to the middle of the unbraided nylon.

5. cut the nylon off were you stoped unbraiding it.

6. you can color it with dye if you want. or you can add a weight to make it sink.

7. to use this lure you put it in the water in front of a gar or some other fish with teeth and a narrow snout. when the fish bites it let it carry it a two or three feet then reel in. if every thing goes to plan its teeth should become tangled in the nylon.

8. WARNING. make sure you untangle ALL the nylon out of its teeth (use gloves) before putting it back in the water thanks,

For a change it was a civilised time to start the day, leaving home turned seven to pick up Wilba for the run down to Swansea. Quick phone call to Sabretooth to let him know we were at the marina so he could get the coffee on.

Lots of banter as we waited to make the 10 a.m. lock and then out into the bay to get some fresh bait. Complete and utter shock as I was first in with a Mackie on the feathers then the other two on the other side of the boat were pulling them in. They kept hitting and I kept missing.

Gave up on that and headed out of the bay and round the headland towards Langland. Boat upon boat was out there already. Sabre picked his spot and anchored up and we were off. Wilba developed a doggie fetish straight away with Sabre and I struggling. We found that we had both an up and down movement and side to side which did not go down well with the red wine that Sabre had enjoyed the previous evening. I soon joined in the feeling of unwellness, hoping that I would catch as that meant bending over to bait up and feeling ill again. Sadly I couldn't keep the blanking up and it was doggy time for me, Sabre having had his large bait wolfed by a doggy. Wilba then broke his fetish by latching on to a decent Huss. Now feeling less than wonderful and Sabre looking even worse we decided to head into the shelter of the bay.

Wilba found himself a little Dab and then nothing. Not a sniff so it was time to try for the bass. What bass!!!! Trolled across the bay with lures working perfectly but no joy.

Quick scramble to make the 4.30 lock (never seen so many boats trying to get in at once) and then it was time to head home.

Long day for little success but the banter was great as usual.

After almost two weeks of non-stop gales and wind I'm getting Cabin Fever....

I've cleaned all my tackle, stripped and oiled my reels, sorted out my tackle box, took apart and rebuilt any old or worn rigs, spent hours posting on WSF and have more or less run out of 'fishy' things to do :(

In a fit of desperation I even cleared out the garage and dragged my boat in to give it a clean and a coat of paint, serviced the outboard, and anti-fouled the hull.

So... I've got gleaming tackle and a gleaming boat but still got lousy weather and still got cabin fever :( Even the dog is miserable and keeps looking longingly at my waders hoping I'll pick them up and take both them and him to the beach.

It wouldn't be so bad but the last time I was out I blanked (Ian Houlton's fault - he jinxed me for catching a turbot whilst he blanked on a previous trip). My freezer, which was well stocked with freshly caught Bass, Bream and Pollack, is beginning to show a few worryingly large empty gaps where there should be fish :(

You can tell how bad things are getting - I even offered to hoover around the house for the wife the other day as I was so bored !!! I'm glued to weather forecasts. The VHF is tuned into the local Coastguard for their 3 hourly weather reports. The car is loaded with tackle and all I've to do is snatch some bait from the fridge....

Damn weather :(

So what do you do?

It is fitted with the latest honda 90hp,in flat conditions it performs perfectly and will easily achieve 35mph, but in any choppy conditions I have planing problems, I have tried trimming the engine but has little affect, the bow will not come up and then water will then hit the cuddy windows and enter the boat. I am considering raising the engine, any suggestions before I do this thanks simon.

I used to think osteopaths ranked alongside incense-sucking crystal aura-healers and Andy Murray as total frauds but I was converted by my sister having wonders worked on her, and by watching Monday's epic comeback against Richard Gasquet. My views on aura-healers remain unchanged.

Anyway, my Scotsman— I mean, my ostepath told me today that recent elbow pain was not from an elbow problem but was caused by an "oldish" muscle injury deep in the middle of my forearm, then went straight ahead and found a really sore knot of muscle in there I had no idea about before. I was quietly impressed, but kept it to myself in case she got overexcited when it came to the Sadam-special neck twist treatment finale. (You would. She's a strong, strong woman. She can open beer bottles in the crook of her elbow. The glass end.)

She actually reckons it was caused by casting, too. She said it's not repetetetetetetetetetive strain injury but would have been a 1-off tear which I'm not letting heal properly. Tennis players get something similar, apparently. Bloody Wimbledon gets everywhere. That's twice in this post and it's not even in the sport section.

Anyway, she told me I should rest it for at least four weeks, ice-packs, self-massage (quick nurse, the screens) etc, and definitely no swinging off cliffs, which I have mostly been known to do once. Or twice.
So she advised me: No Fishing.
:g:

I advised her to shut her yap if she wanted the cheque signing

That's the first fish on the rig! it was used as a 2 hook clipped rig at distance. The rig will be converted to take conger from a boat off Portland, then its off to Moggs eye for the Smoothound and Flounder
