    A Nice Salmon

Just got back from a few hours fishing on the Wear at Croxdale and landed this nice sea trout of 4.5lb ish (forgot to weigh it ) .
What I thought was a salmon ,turns out to be a sea trout.
Just looked on google for this fish, and it turns out to be a sea trout and not a salmon.
I was coarse fishing , when this fish took my maggot, naturally it went back to grow some more.

It shot off up river like a ruddy torpedo, and only stopped after I set drag a little bit tighter, then low and behold the bailif from our club actualy helped me with the landing net to land it.

I have always ledgered for trout with maggot ,cos I cannot get away with those ruddy fly rods...........all I seem to do is get in a tangle with the line............but each to there own.....even the bailif was ledgering with maggot.

Nice one! Have you tried a bunch of lobb worms yet? I used to get the odd salmon accidently while after barbel/eels!

This post really concerns me! You appear to have course fishing gear yet you say you were targeting trout almost a month before the trout season opens

The fish you are holding is a sea trout kelt that spawned at the end of the season, a time when we let our quarry have a rest so they can breed in peace. At least you had the sense to return it, hopefully unharmed.

Was the baliff you mentioned aware your were targeting trout out of season?

What I ment to put was I was coarse fishing .................
Even the bailif was useing maggot and catching trout , but no matter what I catch it goes back anyhow .
I always adopt a catch and release no matter what fish it is.

    Hiya Brian,

I may be wrong but I think you were correct with your first ID, it looks like a reasonably well mended Salmon Kelt to me. The tail looks as if it's concave (Salmon) and not convex (Sea Trout), also a distinct lack of Spots, a kelt Sea Trout would still be heavily Spotted at this time of year. I would have thought a concerned game angler would have been able to spot that

    Now Dave,

I did wonder about this fish, cos the bailif that was with me said it was a salmon ,yet the lad that took the photo said it was a sea trout.
I have looked on google about it ,and it says that it`s a sea trout ,going by all the spots.
    But ..................it went back anyhow.
