    not so many flounder about these days in the river but you might have a chance on peeler during the day. cast towards the sandbank at the estuary mouth for a bass on the incoming tide. not sure if the sand eels really about yet so mybe peeler best again. i prefer to fish a small weight off the point (cast towards the pink building on the shaldon side) and let the current bring yor bait round in the fastest part of the tide. sometimes get some real big shoals out there on a fast rip. lots of schoolies but a few bigger ones come out all year round. personally fish the estuary mouth rather than the beach, light tackle one rod keep it in yer hand. never had much joy bottom fishing a static bait. later in year live wriggler your only bait choice.

    As a small boy I use to fish the harbour jetty and get huge garfish they were like mini marlin.
    I also use to fish shoulden side from the stoney beach useing peeler crab and caught a few coalys.
    Couldnt tell you if the jetty is still there or if you are aloud to fish there anymore (happy days).

    The quays are now out of bounds to anglers...something to do with the safety elf. Would also suggest reading the nursery area regs regarding Bass in the estuary, designed to protect these immature fish, and bear in mind you are being watched from the Shaldon side by the residents, who don't like the mess that anglers (never us, of course) leave behind. Shaldon bridge is also off limits to anglers.

    You take it easy mate.
    No full pendulums until you get your full hip rotation and balance.
    Good luck and tight lines

    I've never actually fished in the Teign estuary itself as when I stayed down in Shaldon for a week about four years ago we took the boat out of the estuary and trolled along the coast so I don't have much knowledge of shore marks personally but here's some spots that were posted some time ago on another forum by someone who lives in Teignmouth and used to sell the sand-eels on the beach in summer. I'm sure a few local members people can elaborate on these suggestions as they may now be a bit out of date. Some of them such as the quays may no longer be open to anglers but at least they're a starting point for shore marks on the estuary.

    1= Teignmouth/Shaldon Bridge
    Really you are not allowed to fish here anymore, but this law has not stopped anyone. The place to fish is on or near the 3rd lamp post from the Teignmouth side of the bridge, either side, depending on the tide. The biggest Bass from here that I have seen was just over 12lbs

    2 = Salty
    The best time to fish this is just when it is uncovering, chest waders are essential! People fish this place day in day out with very good results. The best place to fish is towards the bridge, but particularly by the last mooring near the bridge.

    3= Polly Steps
    Again, the outgoing tide is great, fishing anywhere along pollysteps will provide good catches. Biggest I have seen here is a 9lb fish.

    4= Fish Quay
    This is probably, my favourite mark in the river, this produces fish in august on whole sprat casting up river.

    5= Back Beach
    Right outside where they sell live sandeel, you will catch loads of schoolie bass, great fun to catch with the odd 3lb fish turning up

    6= Shaldon Lighthouse
    Low tide mark only, fishing along side a strong current and a wall.

    P.S I've also been told the point which is the very end of Teignmouth beach and which looks such a good place to fish is a tackle graveyard. Apparently some of the locals have been known to suggest it as a hot spot to visitors as they can then go and collect their lost tackle at low water! Also if you decide to fish the Salty which is the shallow area of the river on the Shaldon side towards the bridge (marked on Ordnance Survey map) which is exposed at low water you need to be a bit careful as it fills from behind. The water comes in fast so it's probably a good idea to watch a tide before you don your waders and venture out.

    Also further back up the river I believe there is a good flounder mark called Charlie's Beach although this may no longer be the case if the numbers of flounder in the estuary has declined over the past few years as seems to be the case from Mono's earlier post.

    As far as the Teign being a bass nursery goes this doesn't commence until 30th April so you'll be fine next Wednesday and in any case the restrictions only apply to fishing from a boat.

    Maybe Mono can add a bit of local knowledge about some of these marks I've mentioned?

    PS. Get well soon mono.

    nice!

    thanks for all the info going up thursday evening(not to fish that day) so should be fishing soon after!
    also it sounds like a ledger with a light weight to roll about in the tidal flow.
    also is there a tackle shop nearby to get baits from?

    thanks

    There's Jackmans Sports & Tackle Shop in Teignmouth and there used to be a small tackle shop in Shaldon on the main street next to the cafe where you could get bait from which I expect is still there.
