Gaurdalavaca Cuba
Me and the Mrs are off to Gaurdalavaca in June, staying at Paradisus rio de oro spa. I plan to take a Rod and a bit of tackle for the shore, not sure what to pack though, any advice would be appreciated. The brochure mentions deep sea fishing is available locally so any info on this would be great. Tried Cayo Coco last year, did a bit of "deep sea" but this was very poor, don,t want to make the same mistake again.

Went to the Luna y Mares (farther along same beach) a few years ago. Shore-wise there's not much, a few barracuda, snapper and big gars to spinners and plus, but you can catch barracuda off a pedalo on shrimp and fish strip.
When I went there were no boat trips (petrol shortage) but the guys in the Sol watersports centre were keen fishermen and would take you out trolling from a Hobiecat early mornings for around 10CUC an hour. We caught some very good fish and lost a few even better ones, including a very large wahoo. We got tuna, kingfish, lots of cuda, yellowtail snapper - and a 50lb oceanic white tip shark.
The sea falls away sharply from the coral outcrops off the beach and there are some large pelagics quite close in. Marco, the head of watersports, said they took marlin, dorado and yellowfin tuna in summer. I'd take a 20lb and 30lb class outfit, run big Rapalas on the heavy one and smaller plugs like Xraps and J11 or 13s on the light one. Marco's favourite lure was a battered little J11 in olive and yellow belly ... it was attacked by just about everything. The shark took a small tuna head lure with a strip of garfish.
I've posted more details on the Cubamania fishing forums and on Tripadvisor; have a rummage on these if you like, or PM me for more.
