best days fishing. ever!
last week, thursday I think, I went up the hills where I used to live to fish one the small hill lochs there for brownies.
now, I have been fishing this particular loch for about 20 years on and off and have never caught a damn thing. its a private place and its stocked with trout every year too, which just rubs my lack of success in even more. the day wasnt very nice and the water was a bit choppy so I put on a sinking line with a gold headed nymph and a diving daddy and tried a few casts to see what was going on. nothing, as it turned out, although I did manage to snag my snips on a back-cast and send them into the deep 5 minutes into the day. not a great start.
after a half hour or so's frustration another angler called me over and we got chatting. he fishes the place regularly and set me straight on tackle choices and the right fly to use. i took his advice and was into a fish on the very first cast! then the next, and the next and the next!
for about 2 hours we were hitting decent trout, both stocked and wild and they fought like demons. we must have lost as many as we landed and i know there was at least one monster out there as we were both snapped off on the first take within a few minutes of one another and we were both using 4lb leader.
after the first couple of hours things calmed down a bit and it got colder so it was time to call it a day. i was reluctant to leave after having blanked so many times in the past, but with a bag of 5 fish all over 1lb and as many released i felt i had more than made up for my past failures and didnt want to be greedy, catching for the sake of it. i walked all the way back to town with an idiotic grin on my face and a spring in my step (for once). I cant wait to go back up, now that I know how to fish the place. roll on the weekend!

they were all taken on the same size 16 black spider. i was fishing a fast sinking line with a 9 foot leader, much to the horror of the other fluff chuckers, who all fish floating line and 15 foot leaders with a team of 3 flies.
they were all catching too though, it was just one of those days. I was gonna go back today but it snowed.2008 SPECIES
