    Advice Needed - Dominican Republic

This one is a wee bit "out of the box" but I am lucky enough to be going to the Dominican Republic in July and was thinking about hiding a wee fishing kit in the suitcase, hoping the FPO doesnt find it.

Has anyone any experience of fishing the Atlantic (North shore) of the DR, in the Sosua area?

If so can they offer any advice please?

    Cheers and thanx in advance!

    Bob

iv been to dominica twice first was to puerto plata which is sosua side then punta cana which is carib side,i stayed in the breezes resort on both sides and they offer fishing which could be arranged thro them but dont know about sosua but im sure there will be something thats if your able to fish as twice iv been and twice iv had the worst skoot of my life.
there also very exspensive if you get ill or need to see doc as a friend got bit by a bug and thought she best see a doctor about it to make sure she would be fine, they kept her in there hospital for a night and sent her back to resort with a bandage on her arm where she was bit and charged her over £1000 for bandage and tablets.they will take you for every penny if they think they can.
    ps
sosua is rife with prostitutes along the beach who will approach you even if your missus and kids are standing there with you

If you do a Search this Forum from the Caribbean home page you'll find 7 other threads on the island. If any relate to the north side it might be worth, if others don't reply, contacting those individuals who've been there by Private Message. (Mike Fisher actually lives on the island but, from memory, he fishes the East coast.)

Another source of information worth tapping into is the relevant forum on the http://www.tripadvisor.com web site.

Cheers guys, and thanx for the info. I pm'd Mike (Mikes Marina) and he has given me some info, more for the east side, but he does reckon that the billfish season will be in full swing when i go there - could be good, just need to wait and see.

1colin - I had heard about the ladies of the night, but I have survived Leith Walk in Edinburgh and Blythswood Sq in Glasgow, so hopefully wont be too much of a pain, unless they complain about the competition (lol)

Will post when/if I get back and let you guys know how it goes!

Bob, are you staying at casa marina I have first hand knoledge of fishing in Sosua, I lived there for four years. Shore fishing is a bit of an art. But the boat fishing is great. You will be told on arrival that it is not safe to go out this is completely untrue. You wouldnt go down a dark alley drunk here dont do it there. the pubic beaches are NOT SAFE AFTER DARK. Right some good charters are to be found, If you go into town find your way to the beach its not hard, You will see a Restuarant called La Roca , There is a small plaza behind it, you will know this as there is a bar called the Rose and Thistle, its an english bar owned by a scottie called tommy and his wife joy good friends of ours. Tell them you know brian and debby from debbys pantry and you want discount. On the end of the plaza there is a small bar called check point, near that is a tour shop her name is linda tell her we sent you, ask her about boat trips. infact if you book all your trips with her same trips as the hotel, same insurance. At a fraction of the cost of the hotel trips. Failing that go to the beach which is on the same track down the side of the rose and thistle, you will get badgered, lookie lookie bye my crap. On the left is a dive school called The big blue. Ask for suzi tell her who sent you and tell her you want to go fishing. Repeat DONT BOOK IT IN THE HOTEL IT WILL COST YOU A FORTUNE. They will tell you that if you book the trips out of the hotel you wont be insured, THEY ARE THE SAME TRIPS WITH THE SAME TOUR OPERATORS. They will charge you treble in the hotel for any trip. If you tell any of these people you know us you will get discount. If you can when they fit your hotel band try to get them to fit it loose and you can take it of, and everyone will think your a local.
Should cost around thirty to forty quid

The fishing is great my biggest was a blue marlin, theres wahoo, snapper, dorado, sailfish, barracuda just too much to mention.

Have a great trip, mines a Barcelo co yahoe cuba libre
    Good luck enjoy your trip.

    I did it for nothing,
also you will find the expats in a bar call Britania and the jolly roger it on the main road where La Roca is same side. If you go in there ask some of the ex-pats about fishing trips, or try to find Eddies sports bar, run by Brits, not far from the reef. Will try and get you some tel numbers.
Make sure you have medical insurance. The best tours are, Paradise island, The jeep safari. if you are going to ocean world, book as soon as you can as it gets booked out fast as everyone wants to hand feed the sharks and swim with the dolfins. If you want to try scuba diving speak with tommy, he will get you a good deal. Make sure you wear a hat and suntan cream.

Dont worry about the putta's they are just trying to make a living, just watch your pockets, they will dip you while you blink.

Oh just one more thing plenty of tourists complain they get the trots from the hotel food, its not the case. where not use to fresh fruit of the trees, try to stay clear of eating too much of this or necking to many fruit cocktails for the first few days. coconut is a great laxative, also if you have a lady going take a pack of ladies essentials, just incase theres arnt to great, so the wife says.

Just thought I would post an update on what was a superb holiday to Sosua on the Dominican Republic.

I managed one trip out with a mob called "Gone Fishing" sailing out of Puerta Dorada just outside Puerta Plata. Fished a half trip and there was only one Baracuda - 15 pound'ish and lovely set of dentures - so at least the boat didnt blank, though it was not me who hooked up.

Plenty of grub and beer on board as the "all inclusive" continued.

The consensus of the trippers was that we maybe didnt fish far enough out and all five dead baits were at the same depth and this didnt help. Two New Yorkers who always know better reckon they should have been staged in depths but who knows.

Thanks guys for the advice, I will be back there one day, even if only to get a refill of the mama juana or a banana papa! hic hic!

Went out with that same crowd in July. Bit of a *******s to be honest. Not one fish between 7 of us. The food and the beer was great but i don't think they put as much effort into getting us fish as they should have. Other that that the Dominican is an absolutly stunning spot. Would definatley go back. Just a pity about the fishing as i had been looking forward to it for about 8 months!!!
