Hopetoun Gummy Sharks
30lb gummy shark taken off the beach at Culham Inlet, Hopetoun tonight. Seas have been massive for the last week. Haven't been able to get near. Chasing mulloway tonight. No joy. Still, mustn't grumble at a tasty gummy. Screamed off with a big slab of fresh flathead. 20 mins on 15lb line. Good lad on the gaff otherwise it would have been at least haff y hour......
LOVE IT....Good things come to those who bait......

Tasty fish indeed they smoothies / gummies. Its a rare time when you dont catch one with a big bait soaking. If its not a gummy, theres usually a bronzie or the dreaded stingas. Pain in the ass those rays. Great fun for the 1st hour or so then it becomes a bit of a drag. Can usually pick them on the first searing run. No head shakes, just raw power.
Hopefully soon I can post my 1st Hopetoun mulloway. Mate picked up an 80lb beast off the same beach fortnight ago. On his own n all. Took most of the night to get it up the steep shelf without getting washed in himself.Good things come to those who bait......

G'Day Bob. Glad to meet cha. My family comes from Jersey. Sure you know plenty of Romerils over there eh. Been over here a few years now smashing great holes in the ground. Not sure if we could move back now; fishings toooo good.
Sure you catch my drift about the mulloway. Know lots of people in this little town who have been catching biiig croakers over the last year. I'm feeling a wee bit left out. Gotta be innit to win it so I will keep soaking they baits.
Watch this space......... In a weeks time when I get off shiftGood things come to those who bait......

Gummy Record
G'Day matey....
When I caught mine in Nov 99 about 3 weeks after I arrived in Sydney for a 2 year exchange job with the Australian Navy I looked it up on the net and found a site that quoted the Australian record at 47lbs.
Looking it up again now is a bit confusing as there are several different opinions....
fishnet.com.au quotes the current record as 23.9kg (52.6lbs).
mrfisho.com (whoever that is????) quotes it as 36.7kg (80.7lbs)?.
But probably the most reliable is the Australian Anglers Association National Angling Records site (but it only appears to be updated and correct to 2 May 2005?) which quotes a Trevor Alan Turner who in Jan 98 at Two Rocks WA caught one of 27.24kg (59.93lbs).........so you have a good right to be a bit peeved with your 66lber!!

Some more piccies...

A South Aust Eagle Ray ... 5ft wingspan (only landed one of 8 hooked!! and one broken rod too)

A Cairns (Fitzroy Island) Mack Tuna

A nice brace of Tassie Brim from near Swansea (that's a 40cm ruler)
All the best,Last edited by daikent; 21-07-2011 at 11:16. Reason: Photos reinserted

Went for a cast last night out at Hammersley Beach in Fitzgerald Nati Park. Wild place n more than a bit of fun just getting there. Serious bush n dune bashing. Almost guaranteed to have the place to yrself. Bagged a nice gummy; almost 40lb. Mate picked up the biggest tailor (bluefish in US) I have ever seen. 3.5kg of angry chopper.
