    Flies

What sort of flies will work at the moment on rivers, on my local river not much is going on on the surface but there is plenty of mayfly nymphs and caddis larvea etc when i turn over stones. any help would be much appreciated

I'm not so hot on rivers but would be inclined to try hare's ears or pheasant tail nymphs, maybe slightly leaded, fished upstream. The takes are hard to spot though, a pause in the line?

pheasent tail nymphs, shrimp patterns/cheq nymphs, also try a clinck hammer around mid day.
Something of the big hairy in the dry department can sometimes prevoke a take from an oppertunist trout, again mid day -early afternoon.
Yep on my local river they seem very slow this year, normally they will hit a big dry any time but this year theres nothing moving on top at all.
IF IT SWIMS I'LL HAVE IT!!!

Try a baitfish imitation in the deeper pools,I've used a sculpin(bullhead) pattern and brown or grey minkies, with great success on and intermediate at this time of year.

BTW don't just fish it down and across,my best fish have come by casting the fly into the fast water at the head of the pool and stripping it back quickly.

My dad just had his biggest brown trout from the river wensum, just over 4lb a real beauty, followed by two more of 1.4 and 12oz.
All caught on his pheasant tail nymph pattern.

Then half way through the river keeper opened a flood gate and the water rose and went brown, ruining the fishing. He's a member but one guy had spent £40 and had come from Barnsley to fish. Not impressed i could imagine!
