Shore fishing in Jamaica
Hi all, first post so go easy on me!
Well in August I'm off with the family to Jamaica. We're staying on the north coast at the resort of Runaway Bay. The Hotel has a small private beach so as I'm an early riser I thought I might try a bit of fishing first thing in the morning before the beach gets busy. I've done a bit of boat fishing in the Caribbean but I've heard the charters can be quite expensive there. So the question is what sort of rod/reel combination would I be best buying, line strength etc? I presume I'll be using lures so I'm after the basic set up really. Another quick question and that's what fish should I target? I've read a few threads on here which say the fishing in Jamaica is not very good as the inshore waters have been hammered so I could be wasting my time (and money!).
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Regards
Tim

i am equipping myself with a Shimano Beastmaster STC, a 6 piece travel spinning rod which are supposed to be up to the job. Taking 50lb braid and a wire trace too to target Barracuda and other toothy fish. In terms of lures, dont make the mistake i did and buy a lot of cheap lures as the hooks and split rings are crap and the lure itself is not wired-through, weakening it. im sure somebody else will recommend you which lures to go for exactly as i am no expert! hope it goes well for you! i would say its def worth taking the gear with you and if you dont have any joy, you may go somewhere with better fishing in the future and will be prepared!?

Cheers for that, all makes a lot of sense, at least I've got a bit of time to shop around before I go.

Jamaica shore fishing
Hi Tim
And firstly welcome to the forum. Just a suggestion, if no one who has visited that area responds, it might be worth viewing the Jamaica forum on the http://www.tripadvisor.com web site. I tried a filter of 'Runaway Bay, fishing' and it came up with 15 pages of entries. Now I'm sure many will just address offshore fishing but there could be something relevant to shore fishing 'hiddened away' somewhere.
If there is something of relevance that identifies fish species encountered post again and we'll try to talk you through tackle suggestions.

Hi, i was within spitting distance of runaway bay last year and went fishing a few times both shore and boat, there are plenty of rays about close in and also lots of small barracuda, good fight even the small ones, lots of spanish mackerel a bit further out but they do come into the bays as well, as for lures i spoke to the locals when there but found most of it was livebaiting except from the boats, you will find lots of the locals trying to sell you trips so always barter and you can get some real good deals, info can be free from them but wait for the catch, they believe nothing is for nothing and advice usually constitutes you buying some sort of crap off them !! but it is a wonderfull place and stand firm on not buying crap, they get the message and will then become friends
