    Hopetoun Tailor n' rays

Lovely day down at Hammersley yesterday. Trying to catch some big bronzies that have been crusing about. First up, needed to catch some bait. Nice 4.5kg salmon should do the trick.....

A nice salmon fillet cut bait soaked for a bit before deing smashed just on dusk. 20 seconds into the fight brought the realisation that it was no shark, but a nasty street brawling stingray....... Theres always that sinking feeling when I realise I'm onto a ray. Oh bugger, here we go again. 40 mins of serious effort for little reward. Knackered by the end of it..... This little fella was around 25kg & was released unharmed (except for a wee gaff hole in the wing).

Couple of hours passed with nothing much. Then another of the shark baits gets smashed. Hmmm, not huge but its giving a bit of curry. What could it be I wondered. Certainly not a shark or a ray or even a salmon. Maybe a small mulloway. NO...... The biggest tailor I have ever caught. YESSSS well chuffed.

Good things come to those who bait......

Thats weird, I can see the pics on my PC??????? Anyway, have attached them now.

Just been out for an afternoon sesh... Again fresh salmon for bait. Caught another bloody stinga, then with the last bit of bait I got a very timid bite indeed. Few meters of line slowly peeled off the baitrunner drag. Flicked the baitrunner off, then all hell broke loose. For 20 seconds anyway. 200m of 30lb line gone in 20 seconds. Drag tightened as much as I dared. Eventually snapped with about 10m of line left on the spool. ABSOLUTELY FUMING. Tommorrow I will use my Alvey. 600m of 30lb should give me a bit more of a chance. What was it???? I'll never know, but I think it must have been one of those big bronzies............

PS. Hope Aicha had a great birthday......

You get tailor pretty much all year round on the mid to south west coast. Bigger green backs come thru in winter. On the south coast where we are the tailor swim with the salmon schools and are often a by catch. They grow big; up to nearly 1m long. Lovely eating. I see you have caught lots of Bluefish. Thats the yanks name for tailor.

Good luck to you Roller, unfortunately I have no sway in hiring n firing on site. You'll have to have a look at BHPB website & go down that route.
