Fly ID Req.
Hiya, Any idea what type of beastie this is?? Our local water had lots of them last weekend, and the Rainbows were eating them like no tomorrow...

Any idea what fly is used to simulate it..

Just been told its a Hawthorn Shield Bug, Unknown in Scotland!!!!

beetle ID
Having a look through all the patterns i would suggest a black bug as this has the body to match the Hawthorn shield bug.

I would trim down a dry green sedge pattern and put some red paint on the wing case and give that a try if you don't have time to tie an imitation beetle pattern.

love trying to id things i see in the wild and use this site for most of my finds.
loch fad has loads of the gorse shieldbugs or at least thats what i think they are. mad looking things when you see them up close2008 species list: pollack, saithe, whiting, pike, dogfish, spurdog, thornback ray, pouting, perch, brown trout, roach, mackerel, blenny, ballan wrasse, cod, goldsinny wrasse

shield bug , usually dark brown /black with whitish shield mark .
