Oct/Nov 2008 Where?
Can get away for a week at the end of oct/nov. Where would you suggest is the best place in the world to fish? Would prefer it not to be too far as I smoke (and tall!) and don't like long haul flights for that reason.
I enjoy light line fishing so not too bothered about 'macho' big game stuff though would try it if available.
Thanks
Steve

The 'States?
Blimey, a few constraints there Steve!
Have you perhaps considered somewhere like Long Island, NY in the 'States? You'd certainly should be able to up your best Bass considerably, albeit they are Stripers. But late October/early November is when you should encounter the 'biggies' that they free-line livebaits for. There'd might also be Bluefish and possibly Little Tunny (aka False Albacore) around and, if you could get offshore, school Bluefin Tuna to 70 or so pounds.
Now your constraints. You're looking at a 6 1/2 hour flight to JFK, less coming back, which you could split by flying via Iceland. Icelandair rates are often very competitive. And most of those scheduled carriers to the 'States are reasonably generous with leg room - more of course if you book early over the Internet and get one of the emergency exit rows.
If that's of interest have a look at my trip report on the Canada & US forum for October 2006. You might even want to have a bash at the King Salmon in Upper New York State.
Closer to home, and here it's best contacting Aram, you may want to consider Fuerteventura? Or perhaps Gambia? With both these, albeit with shorter flights, you'll probably end up with a lot less leg room on charter flights.

Thanks for the info Dave. What sort of money are we talking about for a trip to NY? It will be during school half-term though.
Thanks

Montauk
Sorry Steve, missed your post. Ah ... school holidays an opportunity for the airlines to 'bump up' prices! I suspect though you'd be able to do it for less that £300 return, there's a lot of capacity on that route with many flights leaving at non 'business friendly' hours.
If you were to fly into JFK it's possible to get a bus or train to Montauk on the tip of Long Island. I though, for convenience, hired a car - it really is a straight forward route, straight out onto the freeway. Then, pricewise, there's a whole range of accommodation at Montauk. Without the wives we were just using small independent motels.
The Bass though. Um ... have a look at these pictures of a near 50 pounder - http://www.big-game-board.info/catch...rs-in-montauk/ - recently taken. It's a place you can go out on a complete range of charter boats - sole chartering or on one of the head boats, or even hiring kayaks - or fish from the shore, particularly near the lighthouse. One way or another though you do need a State licence.
Looking back at Spitfire's post though, closer to home, have you perhaps considered a shore guided trip to either the north coast of Cornwall or west coast of Ireland. That could certainly do away with flying.

And of course the Bass can get somewhat larger. Here's a picture of one a tad over 75lbs - http://www.noreast.com/magazineissues/cover.cfm?e=3.
