Cozumel - August - Shore Fishing
Hi all,
I have searched this forum and already read through some excellent advice on this destination but was just wondering if anyone could offer any further guidance reference, fishing from the shore.
Are there any places on the island where fishing is prohibited? Alternatively any hotspots? I will be staying on the west coast of the island along Playa San Francisco. I will be taking my medium weight spinning rod, hopefully after cuda's, jacks etc.
Any help would be more than welcome.
Thanks,

Hi tonic
There are areas around Cozumel that are designated marine reserves and no fishing is allowed http://www.aquasafari.com/marinepk.html
http://web.mit.edu/scuba-club/www/Cozumel.html though I am sure there are other parts of the island where you can cast a line.
As regards tackle the rod you mention should be fine for most of the spcies there. Fishing in the early mornings or into the evening are the best times around any rocky outcrops or reefs, there are a lot of small fish with the occasional bigger one coming in close and even the smaller ones fight hard

Many thanks for the info Millser. Looks like I may have to head to the north of the island as pretty much the entire west coast seems to be protected.
Are there any pangas to hire out on the island anywhere? Any recommendations/price etc?
Again many thanks for the help.

Hi mate,,,,,I live in playa del carmen but at the moment I'm living in essex,,,,,I've been in cozumel many times but I don't know what about fishing there,,I recommend you to rent a scooter and go around the island there are many beautiful places and you can ask to the locals .
you can try some spinning in the pier for some skip jacks ,,but I think it's not allow but anyway you can ask and people are very friendly .
maybe you can take the ferry that goes to playa del carmen ,,and there you'll find many places to fish from the shore or hire a small boat.
