boats?????????

hi guys hope you can help,, i have a orkney 520 and im looking to up grade to a bigger boat as i dont feel my little boat is up to the type of fishing i enjoy doing ,,its a great boat but the free board is only around knee high and this does not give you confidence in a big sea so its upward and onward,,im very interested in a worrior 165 or 75 or a quick silver ,,i love the idea of a cabin with a door etc but i heard bad stories of very soft hulls that can get trailer damage on the quick silvers,,,and im afraid in a worrior even with a 32in free board ,,in a big sea it will feel like im back in the 520..any help would be great especially from any owners of any of the boats mentioned..............phil

it's all down to one thing. how much do you want to spend?? this will govern what you can get meanwhile there are some good boats to be had on web sites that specialise in boat sales it will pay you to have a surf round them most have the boat specifications with each boat and a list of gear that goes with them you may well find something you have not considered is what you want.

Phil Dublin there was a cracking 18ft Dory on e-bay until today, with plenty of freeboard & a cabin that would sleep 2. I know what a Dory is like I have a 14footer. It went for £510 & although it needed a clean below the waterline where it had been on moorings, it looked like a marine tank!
I would have loved it but I cant manage 18ft on my own any more, & nobody wants to go at somebody else's convenience. Once you get over 18ft it gets difficult to trail & launch them, you are limited as to when you can go out, after having a 28footer on moorings I wouldn't contemplate it ever again!

I have a Quicksilver 620 and am very happy with it. However the trailer that was offered with the package, to my mind, wasn't up to the job, not enough rollers for support and with it's rated load approaching the wieght of boat and engine it would run at 95% of capacity all the time. Not ideal so I had a custom trailer made for it to my design, capable of carrying twice the load and has twice the number of rollers as well as keel rollers. It also has an extending drawbar so I can get the trailer another 12 feet down the slip before the vehicle wheels touch water. The trailer cost me exactly the same to have made as the one offered with the boat.

They are a great fishing tool I think and the wheelhouse is a bonus if the rain decides to put in an appearance. I quite often use mine for a full weekend's fishing as the cabin makes overnighting practical.

I had a Seahog before this and I miss the easy launch of it, I could nip out for a few hours after work on a nice summer evening. Something I don't do with the Quicksilver very often, it is too big.

Like Gus said it is down to how much you want to spend, and what you want. Can I suggest you try a days fishing on the boats you think may fit your requirements, may save you an expensive mistake. If you want to try the Quicksilver you are welcome to come and try mine if North Wales is not too far for you. Looking at your Nick I suspect it may be

I can second the comments Chris has made about the Quicksilver 620. I have owned one for nearly 2 years after also upgrading up from a Seahog shortie.
To be Honest I do trail mine, but not regular, but on a decent beach or slipway it can be lauched or retreived by 2 people no Prob. I did buy my trailer with the boat but it is a multi roller and Keel roller combo, this seems to work very well. The trailer is made by Severn Valley trailers if you are interested. I have a 90hp Merc 4stroke on the back of my boat and can't fault it really.

Hi Phil,

Personaly i would go for a 90hp or above. My boat will do 27 Knots at full pelt, but at lower revs you still have the power to keep you on the plane. A 75hp would probably be ok with the right prop and set up, but depends on how many you will carry on an average trip, also the fuel economy will suffer because the engine will be running fully loaded most of the time.

hi steve there will be always 2 and usualy 3 but if 4 people were abord would the engine suffer,,,its a second hand boat im looking at 03,,and there are 2 boats available one with a 60 and another with a 75,,,any sugestions on what i should do,,,i souppose i could up grade the engine after a while im sure id get a good trade in price the engine has only 4 hours on her...but its a lot of money ,,,what do you think the proformance would be like on a 75hp,,,

Hi Phil,
Firstly I would go for the larger of the two engines, you will not regret it. The 75hp will be fine, but needs the right prop to perform at its best, as a starter here is a good site to get the basic prop size and pitch and then I'm afraid it's a bit of trial and error to get it just right. http://www.mercurymarine.com/prop_selector
I bought my outfit from ABC marine in Anglesey and found them allways helpful, I'm sure if you give them a bell, they will be pleased to help further with the prop size.(Robin or Rupert) http://www.abcpm.co.uk. In my opinion it's not out and out speed you need it's mid range power to keep you on the plane, because let's face it, how often is the weather and sea that calm you can run at top speed.
