Ripe Kelt ???
Just been reading the 16 lb salmon report.
Never done salmon fishing, but why are so many references made about the fish being ripe? What exactly does that mean.
Also what's the rule about keeping coloured salmon?

Ripe = a fish close to spawning.
kelt = a fish that has spawned.

I give this link not because I think you should read it but to demonstrate that there are alot of rules that apply to salmon/sea trout fishing.
In general, because salmon are now a species whose population is recognised as being in decline in most rivers catch and release is encouraged. Especially salmon that are approaching spawning and are of little culinary value.
This is a subject that I could write a book on but cant be bothered!
BUT, there are plenty on this forum that can answer salmon questions much better than me..........

Thanks for the info. I doubt i'll ever catch a salmon, hardly ever do any freshwater flyfishing, even then it's reservoirs and lakes. But good to know anyway.
By the way that was a brilliant catch Steven. If i was in your place i'll have kept it as well.
