I fished (and snorkelled) a little way south of Barcelona three years ago; the open sandy beaches are a bit of a desert but they have rock and concrete breakwaters there to protect the beach; wherever there's a bit of current and some shelter there's fish. The locals used coarse (size 14-16) hooks baited with two or three small, pale ragworm which they impaled on baiting needles to get up the shank and trace. They caught mullet, nothing bigger than half a pound.
Around rocks you get various types of bream; I had plenty of a small green and silver species with black bands, biggest the size of my palm. The real star, the one they all want to catch, is the daurado or gilt-head bream. One of the locals took a beauty from the breakwater, about 2.5lbs, and after he'd bashed it on the head he knelt in prayer! He took it at night (the better fishing seems to be at dusk and later), and unusually, he was using a 12ft beachcaster-style rod. I thought they all used quivertips there (which they do for mullet) but he said he needed a stiffer rod to stop the fish from diving into rocks and to lift it out of the water. He still fished on the bottom close to the rocks, no more than 20 yards out, using some sort of worm that looked like a dog's dick on a No 1 hook.
The tackle shop sold three or four different sorts of worm, all of which bar the rag looked a very unfamiliar. Any will catch daurado, the bloke said (where have I heard that before?). Otherwise, they sometimes get small mackerel inshore, and immature soles and flatfish over sand; and they spear-fish for octopus, again around rocks. But I'd have to say, IMHO, that Chesil's a better bet. Try the West Bexy caravan site next year matey!

another thought: I don't know if you coarse fish but the Ebro river is not far from Salou: some of the finest catfishing (200lb plus) and big river carp in Europe, apparently. I've not fished it, but there are Brits who fish, guide and advise. It's a big river, and they use heavy beach and even boat gear. Have a search on the web if you're interested ....

Ebro Delta
Hi Chesilmaster
I guess it was reading Mark's note about Salou's proximity to the Ebro that made me think of these links. They all refer to saltwater fly fishing opportunities - some wadeable, some from kayaks - but I guess the fish they encounter - Bass, Bluefish and Leerfish plus others - aren't terribly fussy whether its an artificial or natural bait you're using.
Here are the links -http://www.medflyfish.com/mag/ebrox.html, http://ukswff.proboards26.com/index....ead=1145016263 and http://ukswff.proboards26.com/index....ead=1137611159. There may be others though on those particular sites.

The most versatile and cheapest of the worms in the tackle shops are Correano worms failing that small strips of squid bought from the local supermarket will do the job, try to find a Mercadonna supermercado the fish are really fresh

If leerfish and dorado are there try livebaiting garfish on large hook 50lb leader freeline. Catch the garfish with three foot trace with small hook behind bubble float with worm or matchstick slivers of squid - a bit of tinfoil helps. Cast and reel in like spinning. If you leave it out the small fish like mullet steal the bait.
Thanks for the web addresses - great sites!
