hi guys. iv'e had a boat for past four years it was a bit grubby but still had lots of potential but i couldn't quite make out the name of the boat as some of the lettering had come off, the guy i bought it off wasn't sure either !. So now iv'e got it up to scratch i would like to rename it" is there some sort of protocol that needs to be adhered to as i don't want to offend any traditions that must be adhered to.

This is a much divided subject!

Some folk think nothing of renaming a Boat whilst others would not even consider it! I didn't believe in boat renaming being bad luck myself until I re-named my old Orkney Fast-liner years ago. Id had 6 very good trips out on her prior to re-naming but after that almost every trip had some kind of misfortune! NEVER AGAIN!

I have just bought another boat and am keeping the name as it is, just changing the port of registry from Weymouth to Dover. Rob

I bought a used boat last year and at first intended to change the name - if you google changing a boat name you will get all sorts of conflicting advice - some say all signs of the boat's old name have to be purged, some say you have to keep the old name hidden in the bilges or on the underside of a hatch and there are 'ceremonies' you can perform. In the end I decided to keep the name (it was obviously American) as I felt changing it would be denying the boat's early life - it was originally owned and kept in Florida. Plus I was going to use the same name as my previous boat with a 'II' added - the old boat ended up with a buyer who put it on a mooring all of 50 yards away, so I also felt it better to avoid any confusion.

So I didn't have to wrestle with any 'bad luck' superstitions - the thing is, if anything does go wrong, you will always wonder if it was down to the name change.

On a more practical and non-superstitious level, you will need to check if the boat has an MMSI number and/or is CG66 registered and change the details accordingly - and if the name is on the insurance policy, also change this.

OK thanks guys , i'm going to go with what we think it was as my buddy would blame me should any mishaps arise ,we have been out a number of times with the name used as we thought it was the correct name and never any probs so i don't think it's worth the possible trouble !!. Anyway many thanks for all advice and time given to this inquiry.

The whole boat renaming thing is an absolute load of superstitious tosh. I have recently bought a boat and don't care much for the name so I am not going to change it just in case.
