Thumbs up Fishing report India - Goa March 05

    Hi
Just back from Goa, angled of Goa - Baga Beach (on the rocky end) and caught a treaville 1kilo on a small white rubber bait, lost a 7- 8 kilo on the same bait. The rocks are high here and u will need a landing net. Tried for the next 2 days but caught nothing. Water there is deep but over fished.
Trawling of Kawar - Mouth of the Kali river - between KrumGhad island and the mainland. Got hit by 2 huge monsters, gaint trevaille and barracuda. using 30mm fireline and rapplars but lost both, the line broke - fish estimated weight above 20 kilos. Next day caught a a barramundi on spinning at the mouth - 12 kilos, great looking fishing. Will send in more details later. But use heavy equip if trawling at kawar.
    cheers
    Dean

    Hi Dean,

Looks like you've been having some good action there. I will get in touch with you the next time I'm in Goa and carrying a rod.

I would love to tangle with a couple of barramundi. Still have to open my account with regards to these fish.

    Regards,
    Indian Angler.

One of the greatest thrills - hooking a Barramundi (aka Estuary Perch) casting smallish shallow runner plugs from shore at a river or lagoon mouth using light tackle (Abu Ambassadeur 6500 size / .35mm line). Remember, these fish are rather finicky and on some days you will have a hookup on every cast and on other days you can cast till you are blue in the face and not have even a single strike. Best time is dusk and if it coincides with the 'tide change' close to 'full moon' then............ my friend, you will have the time of your life. Good clean fighting fish. Very light trace wire recommended. Also a bit of advise - the biggest Barramundi are caught on the smaller plugs.

oops, forgot to mention.... bear in mind that where you get Barramundi you also get GT so be ready for that hard strike and a possible completely stripped reel. Happened to me (twice) last September in Trincomalee on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. Switched to a larger reel (Penn 320GT2) and caught a GT - 18 pounds.

Hi all, I am new to the forum but will be holidaying in Goa mid april, any tips on whats on offer, I have been to Goa before and spent six months travelling about 5 years ago and all i managed was small snapper off Baga rocks and loads of moray eel.
I did not have any decent tackle at the time so I am determined to go back better prepared.
I will probably head south to the Palolem/Canacona/Agonda area any tips greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Goa

    Hi Mahoo
And firstly welcome to the forum. I'm sure that you should get some detailed feedback on this form those that have posted to this thread but also, hopefully, from Indian Angler who's currently trying to catch a Marlin out from the Andaman Islands.

Whilst there's not a lot of detail on this I've included the url of an Indian portal site - http://maps-india.com/adventure/angling.htm - that might just give you some general background.

Could you please, after your trip, post back on this thread details of what you manage to catch and what lures were successful. It will be extremely useful to others subsequently visiting Goa.

    Thanks
    Dave

    Many thanks Panama Jack,
It looks like you have had some impressive fish and fishing!
I will certainly post any info that i can on returning(I fancy a bit of Barra bashing as Deagonsalves has illustrated above), as I say I have been before and wished I had my proper tackle with me then, as there was certainly far greater potential.
I am hoping that a large surface popper near the rocks at dawn/dusk will do the business for me.
When I was travelling 5 years ago my friend and his girl went to the Andamans for a couple of weeks and whilst snorkelling he said there was some amazing fish to be seen, sometimes so large that it scared him out of the water!
    Thanks for the welcome!

    Hi Mahoo
Never fished for the Barramudi, but they look impressive creatures and they JUMP!

In terms of surface poppers the ones I prefer, when fishing for Jacks, are the Yo-zuri Hydro Tigers. They cast well and, being through rigged with wire, are extremely robust. I know you've only got a few weeks left before your holiday but several of the UK on-line stores stock them. I often used to buy them through Harris Angling.

Best wishes for a successful trip.
    Kindest regards
    Dave
