Visiting Guernsey - Poll re RSA
Hi All,
Following discussions on several forums, I would be interested to canvass some opinion via a short poll.
The aim of this exercise is to find out the extent of the angling publics opinion over the reported slaughter of breeding fish off the coast of Guernsey and whether this issue has had a direct impact on your decisions (if there were any) regarding a visit to Guernsey in which you would have fished.
I am simply looking for evidence which may provide an argument to local and wider authorities (either way) in the protection (or not) of breeding/spawning fish off the Guernsey coast.
I think that Guernsey should be promoted as a venue for RSA's.
Many Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Guys,
See my signature for details of my web page.
The discussion re the fishing problems in Guernsey has cropped up quite a bit, but one thread on Anglers Net really got it going see here it does get a bit rough but for AnglersNet, it's fairly polite. This, after months of moaning and discussion prompted me to try and take a different line to that which seems to have been covered before hence the poll questions.

A few letters have been going into the Guernsey Press
See:

If anyone feels like putting pen to paper, a few more won't hurt :-)
Also need to bring the issues to the attention of Guernsey's Tourist authorities and local politicians, aswell as businesses that depend upon visitors etc.

already writen to all parties in the unfair and accusational articles written and reported in Guernsey.
Have been visiting nearly every year for the past 20 years but with the attitude of some it brings me to think we are not wanted! Even though I spend roughly £1000 for a weeks B&B, Charter boat place, Food, Beer & Taxis.
If any buisness owners are reading this.
Thank your commercial sustainable(NOT) fleet who are alienating the RSA under the guise that we are raping and pillaging your fish stocks, for us to now take our money else where in the CI, UK and else where in the world!http://www.freewebs.com/jonesthefish/

It looks like a minor (localised) disaster
Unfortunately we RSA's from the mainland aren't in a very strong position over this after what happened with the slaughter over a few years of Turbot & Brill in Guernsey states' waters by Angling charter boats from the South Coast of England.
(edit: When I say "a few" I mean the past 6 to 8; the catches were not noticed so much and were probably much less over the previous 15 or more)
We can try, we should try, but I think the States may not rate the overall, nett, economic value of Anglers ...when some commercial fishing is reduced... as highly as we do.
They may think that our contribution (compared - say - with other tourists) does not merit us fishing-out the mark (over a longer period of years, of course) as opposed to people who live on Guernsey.
Or the mark being designated a No Take Zone.

Now if they were considering imposing a bag-limit either per person or per boat ..... on both RSA and commercial rod & line fishermen, their economics might look a little different !Last edited by Ravelling Tangler; 10-05-2007 at 17:55. Reason: explaining "a few years"

I think that is a bit harsh! Slaughter!
Dont forget we are not the only people catching the fish!
BUT! we are selective! We or should I say I, have put back alot more than I've taken
Cant remember the last time I had more than a ton of bass on the boat?
We all get a bit crappy when we here of this sort of slaughter of bass stocks but I have always looked at it as they have as much right as me to fish.
These proposals have been made to stop RSA from taking fish, only for the comm boys to take them! Nothing to do about conservation!
Who gives them the god given right to own fish they havent caught!
Sorry but thats what the vast majority of opinion is! not only on mainland but on the islands too!
Just ask the Jersey & Alderney boys!
