Hi Codfarther
In one of your posts you mentioned the Sea Trout and Salmon fishing. Here's some 'bits and pieces' I've picked up from our Club's web site and a Swedish (and German) friend that might be of some interest. It all relates though to fishing in the Baltic - off the southern coast, and further north.
Any rate first here's a link to a brief article on our members' trip in 2004 - http://www.scbi.org.uk/pages/News_WhatsNewNfc200405.asp - and Olaf's, who they fished with, personal 'blog site' - http://mitglied.lycos.de/grimmel23/. I don't think he's necessarily fishing in the Baltic this season, but at least it should give you some background information.
Then this is a note, verbatium, I received from a Swedish friend to lives further north on Gotland. Most of this fishing is, in the salt - well given the Baltic 'salty-ish - with the fly. He does though occasionally spin.
Hope that's of some help. The Sea Trout is hunting close to the island between September and May when the water is cooler. You can catch trout in the summer too but it
would have to be at night, I have little experience of this fishing style. All the fishing is done wading independent of the type of gear; spinning or fly. Most of the Gotland shores look like shelves - when fishing you have high cliffs behind you, you are (mostly) wading on a limestone "flat". And in front of you there is a drop off. The shoreline is like a staircase with flat areas interfoliated (interspersed) with drop offs. Sometimes the drop is just a couple of meters, and in the deepest place its 70 meters. The trout hunt these areas since a lot of small fish is pushed together where the waves break and also a lot of other food (shrimps etc) comes loose from marine plants.
This fishing can be very visual. The water is generally very clear
(unless you are fishing after a storm) and often the trout follows whatever bait you are using and you can see it before it strikes. It’s not unusual to spot the fish before casting towards it. When the trout reaches the shallow water on the "flat", its fins breaks the surface or a "plow" shows up, that's very exciting, will it take, should I bring the fly in faster, or slower maybe. When we use spinning rods we tend to move a little bit more along the drop offs, when flyfishing we move less (naturally, since you don't have the same range with fly rod, you have to be more careful with your moves). The trout here is larger than the fish caught on the mainland. We seldom catch trout under 2 kgs. Every year fish over 7 kgs are caught. Personally I like fishing in the spring better, my favourite months are March and April mainly because it’s getting warmer. Fishing is as good in January but then you have to fight ice in rings and line.
Dave
