Good time to have a crack

Hi all, although primarily I am involved with the salt water fishery< I think I should share some info on our outstanding freshwater opportunities. This month really heralds the start of the season from a locals perspective in terms of the rainbow trout fishery. Many locals in the Bay wait primarily for this time of the year to dust of the flyrod and pursue some of the giant rainbow trout the Bay is famous for. Although most of the local anglers pursue the trout at night, day time opportunity is where I get my juice from. Picture this: hundreds of rainbows in spawning mode circling not more than 10ft in front of you, admittedly you still have to be patient because at this time of the year the trout have other things on their minds aside from feeding. In saying that the catch rate is still mighty spectacular and of course they are all in top condition, splashed in all their magnificent colours. The favourite fly for fishing the lakes is a fly called the glowbug, which to be honest is all most like cheating, it is a fish roe imitaion which absolutely slays the fish at this time of the year, not my idea of flyfishing but legal non the less. My favourite is the red setter, a fly which with patience and stealthy presentation will prove the equal of the glowbug and you kind of feel a bit better about catching fish if you know what I mean. We have several lakes and feeder streams which hold trophy proportioned fish and are within minutes of eachother, if anyone is planning a trip
please don't hesitate I would be more than happy to give you all the info you'll need to make it a memorable trip.

    Rainbows

Many Thanks for including that posting Lionel. I know that a lot of the forum's members do trout fish, and New Zealand's one of those places that we all aspire to visit.

I think the best trout, a Brownie, that one of our Club members had from the North Island was a 14-08 pounder taken in a crystal clear stream on a 'Wilderness' trip.

There's also an associated forum devoted to fly fishing and I've also included a link to this thread on that.
