Norway
I have booked a fishing trip
to the north of Norway in July, has anyone fished Norway or have any information
that can help make the trip has enjoyable as possible.
I've heard that there is a chance of Halibut, how do you fish for them?
Thanks

Hi MLG.
The halibut is a fierce and not easy opponent. I'ce caught only one from shore (7 lbs), youre most likely to succeed with boatfishing. Where in Norway are u heading?

I'll be staying at Skjervoy for a week.
What sort of bait and tackle would you recommend?

Hey MLG welcome to the site. I've fished norway a few times but never that far North. Where your'e going it's almost the top of the world. What you might expect to find is deep water and huge fish. Gear wise your going to need a heavy rod, 30lb-50lb class with a good reel capable of holding a lot of line.Braid or wire is the only way as you could be fishing in depths of upto 1000ft.If it's Halibut you are targeting i suggest you go to the gym and build up some muscle because they will strain you to the limit. Look at some of the norwegian /German web sites.Theres quite a lot of info on this area. I take it that you will be flying up there so you're restricted on the amount of gear you can take.Is this a self drive or have you organised a guide / charter service?

The trip has a guide and there will be a larger boat avalible to charter, but also a self drive boat.
We are flying, in to Oslo first and then a connecting flight, so our gear is going to be restricted.
I look at a site last night and they look very powerful, and also dangerous, when they are in the boat, the fight they put up looks unreal, this is why, i would like to try my hand at catching one.
Thanks for the advice

here you can look little about fishing in northern norway, this is one of the hot spots of norway, you can get big halibuts there.
one of my friends have been many times in skjervoy, but he got only small fishes, under 10 kg, normaly size about 1-3kg, but not any halibuts.
if you want more information, I'll have some good places in lofot and near of it, biggest halibut what i've got last summer was 16,5kg, but there was few very big in my hooks too (size class 100kg), now i have bigger hooks, so I'll hope that I get them up in this summer.
this kind of fishes we are after....
