I've caught a few mullet from Ibiza just off of San Antonio. I used bread and a simple float rig. You will probably find that when you throw in a handful bread hundreds of fish munch at the ground bait but the minute you throw in a baited hook they ignore it. I found a bit of perseverance paid off and they will eventually come round to the hook bait. A couple of years ago I fished off Lanzerote and I used sections of king prawn bought from the supermardado, I fished them on the bottom and on the float. I caught small bass, silver bream, and a couple of horrible looking stone fish (i think). Bloody good fishing and a good way to get rid of a hangover.
One Spanish guy used a different method, he used a fishing rod as thick as a scaffolding pole. His rig which he told me was called the "killing machine" was a huge float, 30mm trace attached to 3 big treble hooks. He put a whole pan loaf on the hooks and cast it in. He waited until a big shoal gathered around his bait and then struck hard into the shoal foul hooking a few fish each time. he wasn’t interested in the sport and was just looking for a few fish for the pan.

i fished in the old town for mullet and it was excellent. prawn too a kind of bream with yellow stripes. for the life of me can't remember the name of them. never forget the fight though. scrapped like hell. mullet to 5lbs was relatively easy.
watch out though that about 4 years ago and a lot of spanish harbous etc have banned angling.
something i didn't know seems you need a license. don't know if this is true but read it on another forum.

Pretty sure u do not need a permit... i think may harbours frown upon fishing cos of careless anglers leaving a mess and also the fact that in the tourist spots harbours are very busy with pleasure craft mooring etc.......... lol years ago in Gosport i "Hooked" a tug boat.

know what you mean paul I once stuck a set of mackerel feathers to the rothesay ferry just before it left port using an elastoplast unfortunately there is a lot of stretch in 300 metres of mono, good idea turned bad almost lost the rod and reel as well.

Licences
Hi Jimbo
As a tourist you might be able to get away without having a shore fishing licence - a 'Licencia de Pesca - Maritima de Recreo' - by pleading ignorance. But I don't know how rigorously it's enforced, and it's a risk that you'd be taking if you didn't have one. Perhaps one of the forum members resident in Spain - Gary Smith or Gary Green - could comment on this?
If it's of any use there's reference to what is a National licence on this url - http://www.garysmithfishing.com/licence.htm.

hi jimbo
www.garysmithfishing.com
you should get everything you need from this site
but yes you do need a fishing liscence in the balleric islands its hard to say but the liscence is different all over spain
if you get one it will only cost 14 euros and last a couple of years the best bait to use just now for the bream would have to be the coreano jumbos
one box will give you a few hours fishing and cost around the four euro mark from any fishing shop
fresh squid and bread are good alternatives
any questions just ask
tight lines garyim gonna get you cody, cody cod
if you see someone without a smile give them one of your own
